To switch to a popup, tab, or other browser window in a PHP Selenium test, save the current handle, wait for the new handle to appear, find it by comparing handle lists, and call $driver->switchTo()->window($handle). Selenium uses the same window-handle API for tabs and windows; the reliable method is to compare handles, not assume the newest one is last.
How Selenium window handles work
A WebDriver session can have multiple browsing contexts, each identified by a window handle. Selenium’s documentation notes that “WebDriver does not make the distinction between windows and tabs” (Selenium: Working with windows and tabs). So whether a link opens a tab or a separate window, use the same PHP methods:

getWindowHandle()returns the current context’s handle.getWindowHandles()returns handles for all contexts available to the session.switchTo()->window($handle)selects a context.close()closes the currently selected context.quit()closes all associated windows and ends the session.
These methods are exposed by the php-webdriver RemoteWebDriver source.
Install the PHP Selenium binding
The PHP client is the Composer package php-webdriver/webdriver, from the php-webdriver/php-webdriver project. It sends WebDriver commands to a remote end, such as Selenium Server or a browser driver. Install it in your project with:

Switch to a newly opened tab or window
Capture both the original handle and the existing handle set before triggering the application behavior. Wait for the handle list to change, then identify the new handle by set difference. The example assumes one context opens and includes a bounded wait:

If multiple contexts can open
If the action may open more than one context, do not require exactly one difference. Loop through the new handles and select using evidence specific to your application, such as the expected URL, title, or a page element. Handle order is not a reliable way to tell which context opened most recently.
Close the child context and return to the original
Call $driver->close() while the child context is selected, then explicitly switch to a handle that remains open. Do not send further commands to the closed context: Selenium documents that doing so can produce a No Such Window error (Selenium window documentation). Use quit() only when the test is finished and you intend to close every associated window and end the driver session.
Common errors and fixes
- The test switches to the wrong tab. Do not use
end($driver->getWindowHandles())or rely on array position. Compare the before and after lists witharray_diff(), then validate the destination. The binding source warns against usingend()to infer the newly opened context. - Switching fails immediately after the click. The click returning does not prove the new context is ready. Wait for the handle set to change before switching; let the bounded wait fail clearly if no handle appears.
- No new handle appears. Check that the application action completed, the browser did not block the popup, and the test is connected to the expected browser session. These are possible causes, not a universal diagnosis.
- No Such Window after closing a tab. The selected context has been closed. Switch to a saved handle that is still open before issuing another browser command.
- The test treats tabs and windows differently. They use the same WebDriver handle and switching API; select the returned handle with
switchTo()->window().
