To generate an HTML report with WebdriverIO, add a reporter integration to the reporters array in your WebdriverIO configuration. For a JSON-to-HTML dashboard, the documented wdio-json-html-reporter workflow records results during the run and converts them to HTML in the onComplete hook. Other integrations, including HTML Nice Reporter and Serenity/JS, suit different needs such as combining suite results or retaining run history.
Choose an HTML reporting workflow
WebdriverIO’s reporters configuration accepts reporter names and reporter-specific options, but HTML output comes from an integration package rather than a universal built-in HTML format. The WebdriverIO documentation identifies both JSON HTML Reporter and HTML Nice Reporter as third-party integrations. Choose based on how you want the artifact produced and what it needs to contain.

Generate an HTML dashboard from JSON results
The JSON HTML Reporter example has two stages: collect JSON while tests run, then convert the report folder to HTML after the run. Install the package as a development dependency using the package’s current installation instructions, then adapt its documented imports and paths to your project and installed version.

Run the tests and find the artifact
Run your project’s usual WebdriverIO command. When the run completes, check ./reports/html/report.html and open it in a browser. Ensure the parent directories exist if your setup or package does not create them automatically. The JSON input folder is separate from the final HTML output, so retain it if you need to regenerate the report later.

generate-html <inputFolder> <outputFile> [historyFile]For example, after installing and exposing the package command as documented for your project, pass the directory containing the JSON report files and a destination HTML file. The optional history file is relevant only when using the package’s history support. Check the package’s current instructions for the exact executable invocation available in your installation.
Configure HTML Nice Reporter and combine suites
HTML Nice Reporter provides a different output workflow. Its documented reporter entry includes an output directory, filename, title, and options for matters such as screenshots, browser display, collapsed tests, and screenshots after commands. Use the exact option names and package syntax in its integration documentation.
For multi-suite reporting, the same documentation describes creating a master report with ReportGenerator in onComplete, with cleanup or setup in onPrepare. This matters because WebdriverIO invokes a reporter per suite: do not assume separate suite output automatically becomes one combined report. Confirm that intermediate files are written where the generator expects them and that aggregation runs after the relevant suites finish.

Add history or execution evidence only when needed
Retain run history
JSON HTML Reporter documents optional historical execution data. Serenity/JS HTML Reporter exposes settings including maxHistory, consistencyWindow, project name, test-run ID, and module ID. These can help when the report needs continuity across runs or identification across projects; they are not needed just to produce a single HTML artifact. See the Serenity/JS HTML Reporter documentation for its configuration.
Attach screenshots, traces, or video
JSON HTML Reporter documents screenshot support. If you need trace artifacts, WebdriverIO’s DevTools and Allure integration page describes attaching trace-mode artifacts to Allure when @wdio/allure-reporter is configured. The video reporter documentation describes integrations with Allure and HTML Nice Reporter. Select these only when the additional evidence helps diagnose failures or document execution.

Keep WebdriverIO output settings distinct
The general outputDir setting in WebdriverIO configuration controls runner log files; it is not automatically the destination for a reporter’s HTML artifact. Set the reporter’s own output options or generator destination as required by that integration. WebdriverIO also supports reporter entries as a name or an array containing a reporter and its options; the reporter-specific shape varies by package. See the configuration reference.

Troubleshoot report generation
- No HTML file appears: Check that the completion hook is configured and awaited, that conversion receives the actual JSON folder, and that the destination path is writable. For CLI conversion, verify the input folder contains the package’s expected files.
- The report exists but has no results: Confirm the JSON reporter is registered in the active WebdriverIO configuration and that its output path matches the folder supplied to the generator. Inspect the run’s JSON output before debugging the HTML step.
- Some suites are missing from a master report: Check the HTML Nice Reporter aggregation flow, suite output locations, and timing of the completion hook. Parallel execution and CI sharding can change where intermediate files land; the documentation does not establish one universal aggregation behavior for every topology.
- Reporter configuration is rejected: Compare the configured class or name and option names with the installed package’s current documentation. Reporter syntax is integration-specific, and examples can be version-sensitive.
- Generated report differs from an example: Verify the package version against the lockfile and use that version’s instructions. The reviewed WebdriverIO pages do not establish a compatibility matrix covering every WebdriverIO major version.
Version and maintenance considerations
The integration examples are useful starting points, not a universal compatibility guarantee. The HTML Nice Reporter page notes a rewrite for WebdriverIO 8 compatibility, but that historical note does not establish support for every current release. Before adopting either reporter, verify its current package release information and compatibility for your WebdriverIO version.
