How to Handle Windows 11 25H2 When a Restart Is Pending

If Windows 11 25H2 is waiting for a restart, you can delay the restart with Windows Update controls, but Microsoft does not document a guaranteed way to cancel an update already staged for installation.

Windows does not document a guaranteed way to cancel Windows 11 25H2 once it is staged and waiting for a restart. If you need more time, pause updates or schedule the restart—but treat these as ways to delay, not as a promise that the staged update will be undone. If 25H2 has already installed and is causing problems, you may be able to uninstall it.

First, check what “restart required” means on your PC

A restart notice alone does not show whether an update is still downloading, has been staged for installation, or has already been applied pending finalization. Check Settings > Windows Update for the current status, then open Settings > Windows Update > Update history and note the update’s KB number and your current Windows version.

There is one possible source of confusion: Microsoft documents a temporary Update History display issue in some cases involving WUSA or .msu installations, where the history may continue to show a restart requirement after a restart. Compare Update History with the current Windows Update status before deciding that the installation is still pending. Microsoft’s Windows 11, version 25H2 update history describes the issue.

If you need to postpone the restart

Pause updates

  1. Open Settings > Windows Update.
  2. Choose the pause control and select an end date. Microsoft’s current instructions allow pausing for up to 35 days.

Pausing is temporary; when the pause ends, Windows resumes checking for, downloading, and installing available updates. Microsoft says that updates “in progress” are canceled when updates are paused, but its guidance does not say that pausing rolls back a feature update already staged and waiting for a restart. Do not rely on it as a cancellation method. See Microsoft’s instructions for pausing updates.

Schedule the restart or adjust active hours

Windows Update may let you schedule the restart for a more convenient time. You can also set active hours to reduce the chance of an automatic restart during the hours you use the PC. These settings manage restart timing; Microsoft does not describe them as reversing an update that is already staged. The options are explained in the Windows Update FAQ.

If Windows 11 25H2 is already installed and causing problems

Uninstalling is a recovery option for an update that has already installed, not a way to cancel one that is still waiting for a restart. In Windows, try Settings > Windows Update > Update history > Uninstall updates, then select the relevant update if it is listed.

If you cannot access Windows, Microsoft documents an uninstall route through Windows Recovery Environment: boot into recovery and choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Uninstall Updates. Some updates cannot be removed. Before uninstalling a security update, consider the security risk of running without it. Follow Microsoft’s Windows Update removal guidance.

What is known about the 25H2 restart requirement

For eligible devices running Windows 11 24H2, Microsoft describes 25H2 as an enablement-package feature update. The package requires a restart after it is applied. That article does not provide a procedure for canceling the update before that restart: KB5054156: Feature update to Windows 11, version 25H2 by using an enablement package.

Microsoft also announced on August 14, 2026, that a newer combined-update restart experience is rolling out gradually. For devices using that experience, Microsoft says a combined update held for a long time may eventually install and restart. This guidance does not establish that every device or update behaves that way; availability depends on the rollout and device configuration. See Microsoft’s one-restart-a-month update guidance.

Choose the action that matches the update state

Situation Supported action What it does not guarantee
You need more time before restarting Pause updates, schedule the restart, or set active hours where available. These controls do not guarantee that a feature update already staged for restart is canceled; a pause eventually expires.
The update installed and Windows is malfunctioning Try uninstalling it from Update history, or use Windows Recovery Environment if Windows cannot be accessed. Some updates cannot be uninstalled.
Update History still says restart required after a restart Check the current Windows Update status and identify the KB or package. The history display may temporarily be incorrect in some WUSA or .msu cases.
