Bottom line: Public information describes Binance’s custody and proof-of-reserves controls, including a vulnerability Binance says it fixed in its proof-of-reserves implementation. It does not establish a current inventory or independent security assessment of smart contracts directly operated by Binance CEX. BNB Chain incidents and loss statistics provide ecosystem context, not evidence of Binance CEX exploits.
What is—and is not—being assessed?
Binance CEX is a centralized exchange; BNB Smart Chain (also called BSC) is a public blockchain network in the broader BNB ecosystem. They are related, but their security surfaces are not interchangeable. Exchange custody, internal services, and proof-of-reserves are not automatically on-chain smart contracts. Likewise, a vulnerability in a public-chain contract or bridge does not establish that Binance CEX was exploited.

The available public material does not establish which smart contracts, if any, Binance CEX directly operates, nor does it provide an independent assessment of a complete CEX contract inventory. The analysis below therefore separates Binance’s own descriptions from documented BNB Chain incidents and statistics.

In its CEX framework, Binance describes customer-asset handling, reserves, wallet security, user-fund transparency, risk management, and listing governance. It says customer assets should be used only as users authorize and describes a 1:1 reserve claim. These are Binance’s published descriptions, not independent verification of its operational security or a complete inventory of its software and contracts.
#1 Best Overall
That distinction matters for vulnerability analysis: reserve claims and wallet-security descriptions address important parts of an exchange’s trust model, but they do not by themselves document every custody process, privileged access path, key-management control, or software component. This is a limit on what the cited public material establishes—not a finding that a particular Binance control is missing.
How does Binance describe its proof-of-reserves design?
Binance says its proof-of-reserves system encodes user IDs and token-level net holdings in a Merkle tree, with the Merkle root serving as a summary commitment. It says users can verify that their information is included. In February 2023, Binance says it added zk-SNARKs, which allow it to prove a statement about backing and non-negative net balances without disclosing individual users’ balances.
Rank #2
Proof-of-reserves can make aspects of asset and liability verification more transparent. It is not, by itself, an account of every internal custody control or a complete security audit. A proof about balances should not be treated as evidence that every relevant system, privileged key, or software pathway has been independently assessed.
What vulnerability did Binance disclose?
Binance says that shortly after its February 2023 proof-of-reserves upgrade, an external blockchain security firm identified a vulnerability in the upgraded solution and that Binance promptly addressed it. The cited account does not name the firm or describe the flaw, affected version, severity, exploitability, or remediation record.
That disclosure establishes that a vulnerability was reported in the proof-of-reserves implementation and that Binance says it fixed it. Without the technical details, it is not possible to infer an exploit path, determine the flaw’s impact, or assess the fix independently. It should not be generalized into a claim that Binance CEX was compromised.
How should Binance CEX and BNB Chain evidence be separated?
| Evidence area | What the cited material says | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Binance CEX framework | Binance describes customer-asset handling, reserves, wallet security, transparency, risk management, and listing governance. | Independent verification of those claims or a complete inventory of contracts operated by the exchange. |
| Proof-of-reserves | Binance describes a Merkle-tree system with zk-SNARKs added in February 2023, and says a reported vulnerability was addressed. | The vulnerability’s technical details, an independent account of the remediation, or coverage of all CEX systems. |
| BNB Chain contracts and bridge | BNB Chain incident statements and ecosystem reports document public-chain security events and losses. | That those incidents occurred in Binance CEX systems or measured CEX incident totals. |
What happened in the BSC Token Hub bridge exploit?
In an October 7, 2022 incident statement, BNB Chain reported an exploit of BSC Token Hub, the native bridge between BNB Beacon Chain and BNB Smart Chain. BNB Chain attributed it to sophisticated forging of a low-level proof in a common library and said 2 million BNB was withdrawn. The organization also described coordinating with validators to stop the incident and proposed a future bug bounty.
Rank #4
This is a relevant example of proof-validation risk in cross-chain infrastructure: a bridge must validate evidence that authorizes movement between networks. But BSC Token Hub was a BNB Chain bridge. The incident is not evidence of a Binance CEX smart-contract exploit.

What do BNB Chain security figures show?
These figures describe BNB Chain, not Binance CEX. They also come from different reports and may use different incident classifications or valuation methods, so they should not be treated as a directly comparable, audited CEX incident series.

| Report and period | Reported figure | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| AvengerDAO and contributing security firms, 2024 report on 2023 | $161,176,631 in monitored security losses; 414 security incidents | BNB Smart Chain activity in 2023, as reported by the contributors. |
| Hacken, 2025 report on 2024 | $47,416,116 in total losses, compared with $161,176,631 in 2023 | BNB Chain losses, as reported by Hacken. |
| Hacken, 2025 report on 2024 | Nearly 70% of 2024 losses attributed to attacks targeting contract ownership or developer access | BNB Chain attack patterns, not Binance CEX access controls. |
The statistics show that public-chain risk is not limited to flaws in contract code: the Hacken report also highlights attacks aimed at ownership or developer access. They do not identify a Binance CEX weakness, and the percentages and totals should remain tied to Hacken’s stated BNB Chain scope.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What does the BNB Smart Chain disclosure page establish?
The BNB Smart Chain repository’s security page asks reporters not to post a public ticket containing a vulnerability and directs them to a responsible disclosure process. It recommends using the latest released version, points to audit materials in the documentation, and states that there are no published security advisories on that page.
That last statement is limited to the repository security page and its publication context. It does not establish the security status of Binance CEX contracts, or show that every BNB Chain component has no vulnerabilities. The older geth and clef audit entries listed there are not evidence of a current audit of Binance CEX.
How can a reader assess claims about Binance smart-contract security?
For any specific claim, first identify the component and who operates it. A CEX custody or proof-of-reserves claim, a public-chain contract, and a cross-chain bridge have different owners, trust assumptions, and evidence trails. Then check what the available evidence actually covers:
- Component: Is the claim about Binance CEX, BNB Smart Chain, or a particular bridge or application?
- Control: Who can upgrade the component or exercise privileged access? The available sources do not answer this comprehensively for Binance CEX.
- Validation: If the component checks a proof or authorizes a transfer, what exactly is checked, and what does the documented evidence cover?
- Assurance: Is the evidence a company description, repository disclosure, incident report, or independent assessment? Do not treat those evidence types as equivalent.
- Remediation: For a disclosed vulnerability, are affected versions, technical details, and a verifiable fix record available? Binance’s cited account does not provide those specifics for the proof-of-reserves flaw.
What remains unknown about Binance CEX contracts?
The available public material does not provide a canonical, current inventory of smart contracts directly operated by Binance CEX or an independent assessment scoped to that inventory. That gap limits what can be concluded about the exchange’s contract-specific vulnerability surface. It does not prove that Binance CEX operates no contracts, nor does it prove that a vulnerability exists.
