Why ordinary right-to-left text rendering can mislead in code
The Unicode Bidirectional Algorithm (UBA) determines how mixed-direction text is displayed. It does not reverse the stored characters: as Unicode puts it, “the characters are still interpreted in logical order—only the display is affected.” The current Unicode Bidirectional Algorithm (UAX #9), Version 18.0.0, dated September 1, 2026, defines the algorithm and discusses security concerns.

In ordinary text, the algorithm considers strong directional characters, weak characters such as numbers, and neutral characters such as many punctuation marks. A neutral character’s displayed position can depend on nearby strong-direction text. That behavior is useful for prose, but a programming line is not prose: punctuation and operators convey syntax, and their apparent position matters. The Unicode bidi FAQ explains how neutral characters and the Bidi_Class property affect display.

The stored source remains the same, but the display can suggest a different grouping or reading order.

Use syntax-aware atoms for predictable display
Unicode Technical Standard #55 (UTS #55), §4.1 recommends higher-level protocol HL4 for source code. HL4 divides text into “atoms” based on lexical structure. Token boundaries are always atom boundaries, and a renderer must not split an atom. It applies the UBA inside each atom while displaying the atoms in a consistent order.
For the example above, an editor could treat x, +, תו, ==, and 1 as separate atoms. The renderer handles the Hebrew identifier’s internal direction without allowing it to pull adjacent operators or the number into a misleading visual arrangement. This changes presentation, not source characters.

Use the language lexer or parser to find token boundaries. Where the language supports it, account for sub-token structure in comments and strings, as well as embedded or nested languages. Syntax-highlighting spans may already provide useful boundaries, but highlighting alone is not proof that the renderer has correct atom ordering.
Choose direction deliberately for numbers and comments
UTS #55’s basic implementation guidance describes placing atoms in spans with a consistent direction, with numeric atoms given left-to-right direction and comment-content atoms given first-strong direction. The containing line’s direction determines the order of the atoms. First-strong means that the direction follows the first strong directional character in the comment content, rather than automatically inheriting the line’s direction.

- Numbers: Render numeric atoms left to right, even when the surrounding atom order is right to left.
- Comments: Use first-strong direction for comment content, or document a deliberate alternative so authors know how it behaves.
- Nested languages: Account for their own syntax and boundaries instead of treating embedded code as an undifferentiated part of the outer token.
UTS #55 reports Visual Studio and Visual Studio Code since Version 1.66 as implementing the basic ordering, while noting that their comments use left-to-right rather than first-strong direction. This is an example reported by the standard, not a current, independent survey of editor versions or compatibility.
Keep source and editing behavior grounded in logical order
Store and parse the source in logical character order. Apply visual ordering during layout and painting; do not reverse or rewrite the code to make it look right. Editing operations should remain coherent with that representation: caret movement, selection, hit-testing, line wrapping, and copy/paste should not silently change the source’s logical order. These are important implementation consequences, although the cited UTS #55 guidance does not prescribe a complete interaction model.

UTS #55 warns against implementing HL4 by inserting directional isolates into a modified display copy of the source. Isolates can describe a formal equivalent, but the higher-level rendering protocol should provide the display behavior. For controls that are actually present in source, preserve them according to the programming language’s semantics rather than stripping or reordering them during display.

Directional formatting controls can influence display without looking like ordinary characters. An editor should make their presence inspectable—for example, with visible markers, code-point inspection, or diagnostics—so authors and reviewers can compare what they see with what the parser reads.

Unicode Standard Annex #31 (UAX #31) discusses ignorable format controls and cautions that permitting them in lexical contexts does not, by itself, prevent spoofing. A safe implementation needs language-aware semantics and a display protocol, not merely a rule that allows or rejects controls at token boundaries. Plain-text export also needs semantics-preserving handling.
For conformance work, UAX #9 identifies BidiTest.txt and BidiCharacterTest.txt as algorithm test files. These can check UBA behavior; source-code rendering additionally needs tests for the language’s atoms, comments, numbers, nested languages, and visible treatment of controls.
Compare editor behavior, not feature labels
Unicode’s standards define useful evaluation criteria, but they do not establish a current cross-editor ranking. Assess a specific editor and version against observable behavior:

- Does it preserve source characters in logical order?
- Does it use syntax-aware atom boundaries and keep each atom intact?
- Is atom order predictable in both left-to-right and right-to-left contexts?
- Do numbers stay left to right, and is comment direction handled intentionally?
- Does rendering account for strings, comments, and nested languages?
- Can authors and reviewers identify directional controls?
- Has its bidi implementation been checked against Unicode’s conformance data?
