With aa-daily-reflections, first determine whether the call rejected or returned a reflection object. A rejected call points to a request or runtime problem; a resolved object with empty or absent fields calls for checking the date, language, and returned data. The package README shows examples of both invalid-date and network/API error handling, but it does not define a complete or stable error contract.
Identify which kind of failure occurred
The aa-daily-reflections project describes an unofficial Node.js library and CLI that fetches Alcoholics Anonymous Daily Reflections from AA.org. Its documented library methods are getToday() and getReflection(month, day); English is the default language, with Spanish and French also documented. The CLI accepts today’s date or an MM/DD date and supports language selection.
Start by recording whether the method rejected or resolved. If it resolved, compare the returned data with the documented fields: title, date, day, month, month name, quote, reference, reflection text, and copyright. A rejected request and a resolved object with missing content are different symptoms; the README does not specify how the parser handles every incomplete upstream record.
| What happened | What to check |
|---|---|
| The method rejected | Check date validity, network access, and runtime fetch support. Preserve the error message and stack in logs. |
| The method resolved, but fields are empty or absent | Record the requested date and language, then inspect which expected fields are missing. Do not treat this automatically as a network failure. |
Check the date and language first
Verify that the requested month and day form a real calendar date. The README demonstrates an invalid-date branch for a date such as February 30, using an error message containing not valid for month. Do not retry a date that is invalid.

Use one of the documented language options: en, es, or fr. The README’s error-message examples include “Invalid date provided,” but those examples do not establish a comprehensive set of possible messages.
Handle rejected requests without assuming a fixed error contract
The README demonstrates checking for Failed to fetch and labeling that case “Network or API error,” as well as a separate “Unexpected error” path. These are example string checks, not a guarantee that every installed version returns those exact messages or exposes typed error classes.

In application code, catch the rejection and retain its message and stack for diagnostics. Avoid making the text of a particular error message the only basis for handling every failure: the project README does not publish a complete error taxonomy.
Inspect incomplete results as a separate case
If the call resolves, inspect the returned object rather than treating an empty field as proof that the request failed. Note the requested date and language and identify precisely which documented fields are missing or blank. The project describes separate HTTP-client and parser modules, but does not specify a recovery rule or exact parser behavior for an empty upstream record.

Do not conclude from an incomplete object alone that AA.org is currently down or that a particular reflection is absent upstream. The package documentation identifies AA.org as its content source, but current upstream availability and the cause of any particular missing result are not established by the README.
Retry only transient failures, and keep retries bounded
The package README warns against excessive requests that could overload AA servers. If your application elects to retry a likely transient network failure, use a small, bounded retry count with backoff. This is application-level engineering guidance, not a built-in aa-daily-reflections retry feature. Do not retry an invalid date.

Check Node.js fetch support when failures vary by environment
The README lists Node.js 16, 18, 20, and 22 support. It notes that Node.js 18 and newer provide built-in fetch. On Node.js 16, the package attempts to use node-fetch if available; if it is not, the README says the package provides an error. If the same request works in one environment but fails in another, check the Node.js version and whether the required fetch implementation is available there.
Keep the package’s scope clear
The paladini/aa-daily-reflections-api project README calls the package unofficial and says the Daily Reflections content is copyrighted by Alcoholics Anonymous World Services, Inc. This is a Node.js library and CLI; it should not be confused with the separate iSpeakNerd/demo-aa-daily-reflections Discord bot, which has a different setup.
