Send compact progress and result messages back to the main thread for display. If you transfer an ArrayBuffer to the worker, remember that the main thread’s buffer is detached and can no longer be used.
Why large ZIP operations freeze the interface
Browsers use the main thread for work such as responding to input, updating the page, and rendering. If ZIP parsing or decompression runs there as one long synchronous task, the browser cannot promptly handle those interface tasks. The result can be delayed clicks, stalled progress indicators, or an unresponsive-looking page. Keeping long-running work off the main thread is a core performance practice described in MDN’s Web Workers documentation and MDN’s guide to optimizing startup performance.

Put archive work in a Web Worker
A dedicated Web Worker runs in a separate global context. It can perform CPU-intensive work without directly manipulating the page’s DOM. The main thread remains responsible for rendering controls, updating progress, and announcing status accessibly.
- Create a worker: Set up a dedicated worker using the approach supported by your application’s browser targets and bundler.
- Send it the archive and task: Pass the file data and the requested operation, such as listing entries or extracting a selected entry.
- Do the heavy work in the worker: Keep ZIP parsing, decompression, and CPU-heavy per-entry transformations out of main-thread code.
- Report useful updates: Have the worker send small progress and result messages. Update the DOM and accessible status announcements on the main thread.
- Handle completion and failure: Return results through messages, and ensure worker errors and decompression failures produce a clear interface state.
Workers communicate with the page by messaging; they do not provide a way for background code to update the DOM directly. See MDN’s guidance on using Web Workers.

Transfer large buffers carefully
Values sent through worker messaging are normally serialized, which can mean copying data. For a large ArrayBuffer that the main thread no longer needs, pass it as a transferable in the postMessage transfer list. This moves ownership of the underlying memory resource rather than retaining a usable sender-side copy. After transfer, the main thread’s buffer is detached; do not try to read it again.
Transfer only when the worker can take ownership. If the page still needs the original data, plan for that before transferring rather than relying on the transferred buffer remaining available. MDN explains the behavior in its pages on worker messaging and transferable objects.

Use chunked processing without assuming a ZIP library supports it
The Streams API handles data in chunks and is available in workers, which can be useful when designing data pipelines. That general capability does not establish that a particular ZIP implementation can stream extraction or avoid materializing an entire entry in memory. Check the chosen library’s own documentation for its actual input, output, and memory behavior before relying on bounded-memory processing. See MDN’s Streams API reference.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCompression Streams is not a ZIP parser
The browser’s Compression Streams API provides streaming transforms for gzip and deflate formats. A ZIP archive is a container with metadata and entries; extracting one requires archive-aware parsing and entry handling. Compression Streams should not be treated as a native API for indexing ZIP contents, selecting entries, or extracting a ZIP file. See MDN’s Compression Streams API reference, which was reported modified on September 1, 2026.

Choose and integrate a ZIP implementation deliberately
There is no universal best library established here. Evaluate candidates against the requirements of your application and target browsers rather than assuming that worker compatibility or streaming behavior is automatic.
- UI isolation: Can the implementation run in a dedicated worker, including the build your bundler produces, without assuming access to the DOM?
- Memory use: Can it read only selected entries and stream output if needed, or does it materialize the whole archive or expanded entries? Account for copies when data crosses the worker boundary.
- Archive support: Check supported ZIP features and compression methods, plus behavior for malformed or encrypted archives.
- Progress and cancellation: Determine whether long operations can be interrupted and whether the implementation exposes useful progress.
- Runtime compatibility: Verify the library’s worker build against your target browser versions, bundler, and security setup.
Prevent avoidable failure modes
Moving work into a worker protects interface responsiveness, but it does not make every archive safe or every operation inexpensive. Handle malformed files, worker errors, decompression failures, cancellation, and unexpectedly large expanded output. Avoid posting a message for every tiny unit of work: send progress at useful intervals and keep payloads small, since frequent messages and copied data can add overhead.
