A spinner, a network interruption, or an expired invoice does not by itself prove that an already-submitted payment failed. If the sending node reports that the payment is still in flight, keep tracking it; retry only after it reaches a final failed state and the likely cause has been addressed.
Start with the payment state, not the app’s timer
A client-side timeout tells you that the app stopped waiting for a response; it does not necessarily tell you what happened to the payment. The operational source of truth is the sending node’s record. Look up the payment there using its identifier and include incomplete payments in the lookup. LND provides payment tracking and payment-history interfaces; Core Lightning provides payment status monitoring. The precise fields and options depend on the implementation and version in use.

For LND, TrackPaymentV2 reports whether a payment is In Flight, Succeeded, or Failed. Core Lightning reports payment status as pending, complete, or failed. Treat these as implementation-specific statuses rather than interchangeable API fields. Map them deliberately into the app’s own states, preserving the underlying node result for support and troubleshooting.
| Sending-node state | What it means for the app | Safe next action |
|---|---|---|
| In flight (LND) or pending (Core Lightning) | The payment has not reached a final outcome. In LND, it may still be finding a route or resolving path-locked HTLCs. | Keep tracking it and show a pending message. Do not send another payment for the same purchase or tell the user the funds have returned. |
| Succeeded (LND) or complete (Core Lightning) | The sending implementation reports successful settlement. | Record the settlement and mark the purchase paid. Do not issue a duplicate payment. |
| Failed | The sending implementation reports a final failure. LND describes this state as permanently failed and not to be reattempted as the same payment. | Inspect the failure reason, address the cause, and only then offer an appropriate retry or request a fresh invoice. |
Do not treat “the user stopped waiting” as a fourth payment state. It is an app interaction, not a settlement result. Keep the payment identifier available even if the user closes the screen or the client disconnects, so the app can resume its lookup later.

Keep the distinction between a payment attempt and a purchase explicit in the app’s data model. One purchase may need a later payment attempt after a confirmed failure, but an unresolved attempt must remain linked to that purchase until the node reports a final outcome. Recording the node’s state alongside the app’s purchase state makes it easier to spot mismatches—for example, a purchase still shown as unpaid after the node has reported success.
Why a request timeout may not stop a Lightning payment
In LND’s SendPaymentV2 API, the timeout limits how long the process waits before attempting the first HTLC. Once HTLCs are in flight, that timeout does not abort them: they must settle or fail. A route failure before the payment’s HTLCs are locked in can be safe to retry, but a payment that has path-locked HTLCs must resolve before it can be considered failed or successful.
This distinction explains why a payment can remain unresolved after the app reports a timeout. A recipient or intermediary going offline can leave a payment waiting for resolution, potentially until timeout. The client’s cancellation or a closed connection may stop additional attempts or stop the client from receiving updates; it does not undo HTLCs that have already been sent. Keep the original payment under observation instead of treating a canceled request as proof of cancellation on the network.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The practical rule is simple: distinguish a failed attempt from a payment whose outcome is still being resolved. The first may permit a retry, subject to the cause and the app’s policy. The second does not. Retrying while the original remains unresolved risks charging the user twice if the first payment later succeeds.
Lightning Labs’ LND Builder’s Guide describes a payment with locked-in HTLCs as a “stuck payment” that “cannot be retried” while it is unresolved. The sender must wait for the payment to resolve as failed or successful. This is why the app should not convert an elapsed request timeout into a failure state, even if the user’s screen can no longer receive the original response.

Build a recovery workflow around the node’s result
- On timeout or interruption, preserve the payment reference. Save the identifier returned or created for the attempt, along with the purchase reference and the sending implementation. Do not discard it when the request handler times out or the user leaves the screen.
- Query the sending node. Use the node’s tracking or payment-history mechanism to retrieve the attempt. For LND, use
TrackPaymentV2for tracking and ensure payment-history lookups include incomplete records when needed. Core Lightning has payment-status monitoring; use the interface supported by the installed version. - If the payment is in flight or pending, continue tracking it. Keep the purchase in a pending state. Poll or subscribe to the available status stream according to the implementation, and update the UI when the node reports a final result. Do not launch a second payment merely because a polling interval elapsed.
- If it succeeded or completed, reconcile the purchase. Persist the settlement result and make the purchase reflect payment. If the client missed the success update, the stored node record lets the app recover the correct outcome without resending.
- If it failed, inspect the reason and any route-failure details. Determine whether the user needs a fresh invoice, corrected payment details, a later attempt, or support. A final failure is a reason to investigate, not a reason to repeat an identical request blindly.
- If it remains unresolved beyond your support threshold, escalate without guessing. Show the payment reference and provide a route to support or the node operator. There is no universal Lightning-wide escalation duration established by the implementation guidance; set and communicate a product-specific threshold rather than presenting one as a protocol rule.
Make the recovery process survive the same interruptions that caused the uncertainty. The payment identifier should be persisted before the app relies on a response arriving at the user’s device. If a mobile app is closed, a browser refreshes, or the connection drops, the next session should be able to retrieve the node’s record and restore the right pending, completed, or failed display. Do not rely solely on an in-memory spinner or a one-time response from the send request.
For LND, the send API returns a streaming response, while payment tracking and history provide ways to follow or recover the payment record. The app should treat loss of that stream as loss of an update channel, not as proof that the payment itself stopped. Core Lightning likewise exposes payment status monitoring and references retries; use the behavior and options documented for the exact installed version rather than assuming the other implementation’s fields or retry behavior apply.
Match the remedy to the failure reason
Error categories are useful only if the app turns them into different next steps. LND and Core Lightning expose implementation-specific failure information; preserve the original reason for diagnostics, then translate it into wording the user can act on. The following remedies are conditional: confirm the sending node’s final status and the actual error before suggesting them.
| Reported issue | What to check | Reasonable next step |
|---|---|---|
| Invoice expired | Confirm that the attempted payment failed and that the invoice is expired. Expiry alone is not proof that an already-submitted payment failed. | Ask the recipient or service for a fresh invoice, then verify the new invoice before another attempt. |
| Incorrect payment details or amount | Compare the invoice and submitted amount with the purchase details. LND documents that underpayment fails. | Correct the details or amount and obtain a valid invoice if necessary. Do not silently alter the amount. |
| No route available | Check the route failure information returned by the implementation. The recipient may rely on private channels for which routing hints are needed. | A later retry may help if the failure is transient. If the invoice or recipient setup is the issue, request a corrected invoice rather than repeatedly retrying unchanged. |
| Fee or delay constraints exceeded | Core Lightning documents route failures caused by exceeding fee or delay limits. Check the limits actually configured for the payment. | Retry only if the app’s fee and risk policy permits adjusted limits, and explain any material change to the user before sending. |
| Timeout with no payment in progress | Core Lightning distinguishes a timeout where no payment is in progress from an unresolved payment. | Verify the status and reason, then decide whether a retry is appropriate under the app’s policy. |
| Non-recoverable error | Use the sending node’s failure reason and available route metadata. Do not infer that an error is recoverable merely because the UI timed out. | Do not automatically repeat the same payment. Correct the underlying issue or escalate to the node operator or support. |
These categories do not guarantee a universal fix. A “no route” or limit-related result is not a promise that changing a setting will make payment safe or successful. Apps should avoid automatically raising fee or delay limits without policy controls, since those limits affect what the app is willing to accept.
Core Lightning’s pay reference includes a retry period as well as fee and delay limits. Those controls are part of the sending implementation’s behavior, not a universal promise that a payment will resolve within a particular duration. Check the applicable option and status behavior for the installed version, and do not use a retry period as a substitute for checking whether an earlier payment remains pending.

Check the invoice before initiating a new attempt
A Lightning invoice carries the payment information needed to send funds. Before retrying after a final failure, confirm that the invoice is still valid and that the amount and other submitted details match the intended purchase. LND’s receiving-payment guidance documents invoice expiry and failure on underpayment. An expired invoice should prompt a fresh invoice from the recipient or service, not a guess at replacement payment details.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Routing details can matter too. If a recipient relies on private channels, the invoice needs the routing hints required to reach them. If routing repeatedly fails, distinguish a problem with the invoice or recipient setup from a transient route failure using the node’s error information; the app should not imply that every route failure can be fixed by asking the user to wait or retry.
Invoice validation is a checkpoint for a new attempt, not a way to decide the status of the old one. For example, discovering that an invoice has expired may explain why a new attempt cannot be made with it, but it does not establish whether an earlier payment with HTLCs in flight has settled. First resolve the original payment through the sending node; then obtain a fresh invoice if the final failure and purchase flow call for one.
Design app states and messages that do not mislead
Make the interface reflect the sending node’s payment state, not merely the lifecycle of the HTTP request or screen. In particular, keep pending visibly distinct from failed. If the payment is still in flight, communicate that the payment is being resolved and the app is checking its status. Do not promise a refund or say the funds have returned until the node reports a final failure and the app can support that claim.
- Pending: Tell the user the payment is still being resolved. Keep the purchase reference visible and make clear that they should not pay the same request again while its status is unknown.
- Complete: Confirm the purchase only after the sending node reports success, and persist the result so a lost client response does not leave the purchase looking unpaid.
- Failed: State that the attempt failed only after a final failed result. Explain the next step based on the reason, such as obtaining a new invoice or checking the submitted amount.
- Needs support: If your app’s support threshold is reached without a final state, offer the payment reference and a support path. Do not call it a failure simply because that threshold elapsed.
Keep the user-facing status and the internal payment record aligned. If the app shows “failed” while the node still reports pending, a user may reasonably submit another payment. Conversely, leaving a purchase marked unpaid after node success can also lead to a duplicate payment. Reconciliation should therefore be driven by later status lookups as well as by the initial request response.

Choose message wording that reports what is known, without guessing about funds. “We’re still checking this payment” is appropriate for an unresolved state; “payment failed” should be reserved for a final failed result. Avoid telling users that money was refunded or returned unless that is actually established for the payment and the app’s handling. In particular, an app-side timeout is not a refund event.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Implementation details and version boundaries
The exact interfaces differ between LND and Core Lightning, and their API fields, status behavior, and command options can change with version. LND’s relevant interfaces include SendPaymentV2 for sending, TrackPaymentV2 for tracking, and ListPayments for stored payment lookup. Its history lookup can include incomplete records; an app that queries completed payments only may miss an unresolved attempt. Core Lightning’s pay reference covers payment behavior, status monitoring, retry period, fee and delay limits, and failure metadata. Check the documentation for the exact version installed before implementing command-level behavior.
Keep the sending implementation’s state and reason available to your support tooling even if the customer sees simpler wording. A useful record connects the app’s purchase to the payment identifier, the node’s latest state, and the failure information returned by that node. This makes it possible to distinguish “the request timed out before the app received a result” from “the node has confirmed final failure”—two situations that require different recovery decisions.
When building support views, expose enough information to answer those operational questions: which implementation sent the payment, which identifier to track, the latest node state, and any reported failure reason or route details. Do not collapse a missing response, a pending record, and a final failure into one generic error code. A compact customer message can be simple while the internal record retains the detail needed to make a safe decision.

- Retrying when the status is unknown: An app timer or disconnected client is not a final failed state.
- Assuming cancellation reverses a sent payment: Stopping a client request does not undo HTLCs already in flight.
- Looking only at completed payment history: Include incomplete records so pending payments remain discoverable.
- Treating every error as a routing issue: Invoice expiry, amount problems, fee or delay limits, and non-recoverable errors require different responses.
- Promising a typical resolution time: Official implementation guidance does not establish a universal duration or failure rate for delayed payments. Set any app support threshold as a product policy, not as a Lightning guarantee.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should my app retry a Lightning payment after a request timeout?
Not just because the request timed out. Query the sending node first. If the payment is still in flight or pending, keep tracking it; retry only after a final failed state and after addressing the likely cause.
Best Value
Does canceling the app request cancel HTLCs already sent?
No. A client cancellation or lost connection does not undo HTLCs already in flight. They must settle or fail, so continue tracking the original payment through the sending node.
What should I do if the Lightning payment is still pending?
Keep the purchase visibly pending, retain the payment reference, and poll or subscribe to the sending implementation’s status mechanism. Do not tell the user the funds have returned or ask them to pay again while the result is unresolved.
Does an expired invoice prove that an earlier payment failed?
No. Invoice expiry matters when initiating or retrying a payment, but it does not by itself establish the outcome of an already-submitted payment. Check the node’s payment status first; request a fresh invoice if the final failure and purchase flow require one.

How long can a delayed Lightning payment take to resolve?
There is no universal resolution duration established by the cited LND and Core Lightning implementation guidance. Set an app-specific support threshold, but do not present it as a Lightning-wide timeout or call a payment failed solely because that threshold elapsed.
How do LND and Core Lightning report payment status?
LND’s TrackPaymentV2 reports In Flight, Succeeded, or Failed; Core Lightning uses pending, complete, or failed. These are implementation-specific interfaces, so check the documentation for the version you run and map the states carefully into your app.
The Bottom Line
When a Lightning payment times out, treat the sending node—not the app’s timer—as the source of truth. Keep unresolved payments pending, reconcile success from the node, and retry only after a final failure and a review of its cause. That state-first approach avoids duplicate charges and gives users an honest next step.
