If DataDome challenges or blocks your browser automation, treat that as the website’s access decision—not as a browser error to defeat. For work you are authorized to do, use an approved integration or contact the site owner; commercial bots can request authentication through DataDome’s documented process. If you operate the protected site, investigate the decision using your own DataDome configuration and logs.
What a DataDome challenge or block means
DataDome describes several kinds of detection, including signature-based, behavioral, and reputational signals. Its examples include headless browsers instrumented with Selenium, Puppeteer, or Playwright, as well as browsers with altered fingerprints. Because its models are continuously updated, no single browser attribute or framework-specific trick is a dependable way to predict whether a request will be allowed. DataDome’s Threats Detection documentation describes these categories.

A challenge or block is a decision made by the protected site’s bot-protection setup. It does not, by itself, establish which signal caused that decision. Unless you operate the site and can inspect its DataDome decision data, do not assume that one particular browser property, IP address, or automation framework was responsible.

Device Check is one possible part of the decision
DataDome’s Device Check runs client-side and normally does not require visitor interaction. Its JavaScript can collect device and environment signals; the result may allow access, block the actor, or lead to a CAPTCHA if more information is needed. Passing a client-side check is not a general guarantee that subsequent automated requests will be admitted. See DataDome’s Device Check documentation.
#1 Best Overall
The JavaScript Tag is one element of a broader detection setup. DataDome says it enriches detection with browser-side information, including behavior and device characteristics. Its documentation lists headless Chrome, Puppeteer, Puppeteer Extra Stealth, and modified Selenium among automation types it can detect. If you implement the tag as a site owner, check the current documentation for supported browser versions and preserve the datadome cookie’s required read/write access and attributes: JavaScript Tag documentation.
If you operate the browser automation
First establish authorization
Confirm that the website permits the activity and that your use complies with its terms, applicable law, and any rate or access limits it sets. For an approved integration, use the site’s documented API or another route the owner has authorized. If no route is documented, ask the site owner for one rather than trying to bypass a challenge.
Commercial bots should request authentication
For a commercial bot or AI agent seeking recognition, DataDome’s documented route is to use a dedicated user agent, configure an authentication mechanism, and submit a request. Documented mechanisms include Web Bot Auth signatures, reverse DNS, static IP addresses, dynamic IP lists, and private AS checks. The website’s DataDome customer decides whether to authorize the bot, so submitting a request does not guarantee access. Follow the current Bot Authentication documentation and the site owner’s policy.

Do not rely on changing fingerprints, rotating proxies, or trying to pass a challenge as a substitute for permission. Those approaches are not the documented authentication path and cannot establish authorization.
Why a Selenium-specific tip is not a solution
DataDome published a technical article about JavaScript fingerprinting in Selenium Chrome, last updated November 22, 2022. The article itself cautions that navigator.webdriver alone is insufficient, that its example may not cover other frameworks, and that the cited Selenium fingerprint can be changed. Treat it as a historical illustration of one detection technique, not as current instructions for avoiding detection or as a reliable diagnosis of a present-day block: Detecting Selenium Chrome.
If you own the protected website
Identify the layer before changing configuration
Start by determining whether the observed decision is associated with a client-side check, request metadata, or another detection layer. A user-side challenge page alone may not tell you which signal triggered a decision; inspect the decision data available in your own DataDome setup before changing policy.
Use the Protection API for backend decisions
The Protection API is an owner-side integration: backend infrastructure submits request metadata to DataDome and receives an allow-or-challenge decision. The API documentation lists HTTPS communication, access to request headers and the end-user IP, and a configurable timeout with a fail-open mechanism among the integration considerations. DataDome documents the custom API integration for Premium and Enterprise customers; confirm current eligibility and requirements in the Protection API reference.
DataDome’s Agentic Trust getting-started documentation says the service is built on Bot Protect and requires both server-side and client-side integrations. It warns that an incomplete or misconfigured setup can produce partial or missing traffic data. Review the current Agentic Trust getting-started documentation when enabling it.

If your authorized task is simply to capture a webpage image or PDF, you may not need to maintain a browser automation stack. ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers; a screenshot request does not grant access to a DataDome-protected site or replace its owner’s authorization decision. See ScreenshotNeo.
Or skip the browser setup
For a page you are authorized to capture, make one GET request. Replace the example URL with the approved target and provide your API key. The ScreenshotNeo API documentation lists the request options.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Troubleshooting authorized automation
- The run lands on a challenge or block: Stop retrying as if it were a transient browser fault. Confirm permission and use an approved integration, contact the site owner, or request commercial bot authentication where applicable.
- A client-side check appears to pass but later requests fail: Device Check can be only one part of the decision. Ask the site owner to review the relevant DataDome decision data; do not infer that passing the check guarantees access.
- Your own site’s traffic data is incomplete after enabling Agentic Trust: Check that both server-side and client-side integrations are present and correctly configured, as required by the getting-started documentation.
- Your site’s tag behaves unexpectedly: Verify compatibility against the current supported-browser list and confirm the tag can read and write the
datadomecookie without its attributes being changed. - You cannot use the Protection API: Check account eligibility and the documented integration requirements with DataDome; the custom API integration is documented for Premium and Enterprise customers.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does DataDome block every Selenium, Puppeteer, or Playwright browser?
No such universal rule is established. DataDome names these automation types among detection categories, but a particular request’s outcome depends on the protected site’s setup and decision.
Does a CAPTCHA or challenge mean the website has authorized my automation?
No. A challenge is not authorization. Use an approved access route or obtain permission from the site owner.
