Yes, Claude may be able to process a 300-page book, but page count alone cannot tell you whether a full translation will fit. Anthropic’s rough estimate of 1,500–3,000 text tokens per PDF page puts 300 pages at about 450,000–900,000 source tokens, before instructions or the translation itself. Check the limits for the Claude model and interface you plan to use, budget for both input and output, and be ready to translate in coherent sections.
Why 300 pages is not a reliable token estimate
Pages vary widely in how much text they contain. Anthropic estimates that a PDF page may represent roughly 1,500–3,000 text tokens, depending on content density. Applied to 300 pages, that suggests approximately 450,000–900,000 tokens of source text. This is a screening estimate, not a count of any particular book; tables, images, layout, and text extraction can change the actual request size. Anthropic’s PDF support guidance explains its PDF processing limits and page estimate.

The translation also needs room. Claude’s context window is shared by the material sent in and the response generated, so a source that fits may still leave insufficient capacity for a complete translation. Instructions, a glossary, conversation history, and other supplied material also use capacity. Check the selected model’s current context-window and output limits in Anthropic’s context-window documentation.
Check which Claude limits apply
Claude chat and the Anthropic API do not have interchangeable limits. Consumer Claude help describes model-dependent context, usage limits, Projects retrieval, and automatic context management in supported situations. The API documentation describes request-level model context, PDF handling, token counting, and caching. Confirm the rules for the surface and model you will actually use rather than assuming a limit from one applies to the other. See Claude’s usage and length limits guidance.

API PDF limits are not a promise of token fit
Anthropic’s API PDF documentation lists a 32 MB maximum request size and a page cap of up to 600 PDF pages for requests using a 1M-token context window, or 100 pages for models with a context window under 1M. These limits apply to the request and may vary by platform. A document can hit its context limit before it reaches the page or file-size cap, particularly if its pages are dense. Check the live PDF support and context-window documentation for the chosen model.
Estimate the book before translating
- Identify the workflow. Decide whether you will use Claude chat or the API, then verify the selected model’s current context and output limits.
- Estimate the actual request. For API work, use Anthropic’s token-counting facility on the prompt you intend to send. Include the source, instructions, glossary, conversation history, and other context—not just the book text. For a PDF, treat the per-page estimate as a rough warning signal, not a substitute for counting.
- Reserve room for the response. The complete translation must fit in the available output capacity as well as within the shared context. A 300-page source estimated at 450,000–900,000 tokens is not automatically translatable in one request, even when a model’s context appears large enough.
- Compare the estimate with every applicable cap. Check model context, output allowance, PDF page limit, and request file-size limit. The tightest relevant limit determines whether the request can work.
- Split before sending if needed. If the estimate approaches a limit, divide the book into chapters or other coherent sections and size them by token count rather than a universal number of pages.
Translate in sections while preserving consistency
For a long book, chapter-by-chapter translation is often the more manageable approach. Keep a compact glossary, name and character list, and style guide consistent across requests. A brief summary of earlier sections can help carry context forward, but it also consumes tokens, so include only what the next section needs. After translating, check section joins for inconsistent terminology, missing passages, and continuity problems.

PDFs with substantial illustrations or complex layouts may need a separate text-extraction and layout-production workflow. Anthropic’s PDF guidance describes processing that involves extracted text and page images; token capacity alone does not establish that a translated book will retain its original layout or illustrations.

If you repeatedly send the same document or stable instructions through the API, prompt caching may make repeated context more efficient under Anthropic’s documented conditions. Caching does not expand the context window and does not make an oversized request fit. Review Anthropic’s prompt caching documentation and its API rate-limit guidance before designing a repeated workflow.

Choose a workflow based on control and review needs
| Workflow | What it offers | What to account for |
|---|---|---|
| Claude chat or Projects | A consumer-facing way to work with documents; supported features can include Projects retrieval and automatic context management. | Limits depend on the model and product behavior. Verify the current help guidance, and do not assume the API’s PDF or token-counting rules apply. |
| Anthropic API | Request-level control, documented PDF constraints, token counting, and caching options for repeated context. | Requires an API workflow or tooling. Model context, output capacity, request size, PDF page cap, and rate limits remain separate constraints. |
| Section-by-section translation | Makes it easier to keep each request within limits and review terminology and continuity as work proceeds. | Requires consistent reference notes and checks for omissions or awkward joins between sections. |
Anthropic’s technical limits describe processing capacity, not comparative translation quality or a guarantee that a book-length translation will be complete, accurate, or publication-ready. Plan for human review of terminology, completeness, formatting, and continuity regardless of workflow.
