You can prepare for web development through self-study, a degree program, or a bootcamp. The practical starting point is the same: learn HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, then build and explain complete projects. Employers’ education requirements vary, and projects can help demonstrate ability, but no learning path or portfolio guarantees a job.

What web developers do

Web developers create and maintain websites, including technical work related to performance and capacity. The role can mean different things depending on the job:

  • Front-end developers build the technical features people interact with, using technologies such as HTML and JavaScript, and integrate graphics and applications.
  • Back-end developers construct the technical framework that supports a site.
  • Digital interface designers overlap with development, but focus more on how interfaces look, work for users, and function across devices and platforms.

These categories are related, but they are not interchangeable. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) describes the work and distinctions in its Web Developers and Digital Designers occupational profile.

Learn the skills in a useful order

For a beginner, a structured front-end sequence gives you a way to make visible progress without trying to learn every tool at once. MDN Web Docs’ Learn web development curriculum is designed to take learners from the basics to a comfortable level, not to make them experts or cover every specialty.

  1. Set up your environment. Get comfortable with your computer’s files and folders, use a browser and code editor, and create a place to save your work. MDN’s Getting started modules cover computer and file-system basics, setting up a development environment, building a first simple website, and introductory concepts.
  2. Learn web standards and semantic HTML. Practice structuring a page with elements that convey what its content is, rather than using markup only for appearance.
  3. Learn CSS fundamentals and layout. Use CSS to control presentation, then practice layouts that adapt to different screen sizes.
  4. Add JavaScript fundamentals. Use it to create behavior and interaction, building on pages you can already structure and style.
  5. Develop accessibility, responsive design, and UI design judgment. These skills help you build interfaces that work for a broader range of people and devices. They are part of sound front-end practice, not merely finishing touches.
  6. Learn version control and collaboration. Track changes, manage code, and become comfortable working with others. Git and GitHub are common tools to explore as you progress.
  7. Choose a direction for further study. Add a framework or back-end topics when they fit the work you want to pursue. MDN’s curriculum focuses on front-end fundamentals; it is not a complete specification for every back-end, full-stack, or specialist role.

This is a practical learning sequence synthesized from MDN’s recommendations, not a universal hiring checklist. MDN describes its goal as teaching “the fundamental skills and knowledge that a front-end web developer should have for employability and longevity in today’s web industry.” That is a description of the resource’s aim, not a guarantee of employment.

Turn practice into evidence of your ability

Build complete projects as you learn, improving them rather than stopping at isolated exercises. Aim to show that you can structure content, create responsive layouts, add accessible interaction, manage code, and deploy a working result. MDN’s core learning material includes building a basic accessible web app and managing and deploying code with appropriate tools.

For each project, make the result easy to inspect and explain the decisions behind it. Be ready to discuss what you built, how it works, and the trade-offs you made. The BLS notes that candidates may demonstrate ability through prior work experience or projects, which makes a portfolio a sensible way to present evidence. Neither the BLS nor MDN sets a required number of projects or says a portfolio alone secures a job.

Choose a learning path that fits your circumstances

Self-study, a degree program, and a bootcamp can all be considered, but the available evidence does not establish that one route produces better employment outcomes. Compare actual options against the needs of the role and your circumstances rather than assuming the credential or format speaks for itself.

  • Cost and time: Compare total cost and the time commitment, not just the advertised duration or headline price.
  • Feedback: Find out whether you will receive useful review of your code and projects, or need to arrange feedback independently.
  • Curriculum depth: Check whether the program teaches web fundamentals as well as any particular framework or tool.
  • Project practice: Look for complete projects, deployment, accessibility, and responsive design—not only short demonstrations.
  • Working with others: Consider whether you will practice collaboration and receive job-search support if those are important to you.

MDN says its materials aim for a “comfortable,” not “expert,” level. Expect to keep practicing and to deepen your skills as you specialize; there is no established universal timeline for becoming job-ready.

Understand education requirements and check local listings

For U.S. web developer roles, the BLS reports that educational requirements range from a high school diploma to a bachelor’s degree. Some employers prefer a relevant bachelor’s degree, while some candidates may demonstrate ability through work experience or projects without a specific education credential. That flexibility does not mean credentials never matter. Review job listings for your location and target role to see what employers actually request.

What U.S. labor statistics can—and cannot—tell you

The BLS’s 2026 occupational profile reports a median annual wage of $92,650 for U.S. web developers in May 2025. It projects 4% employment growth and a net change of 3,300 web developer jobs from 2025 to 2035. The profile also projects about 13,600 annual openings over 2025–35 for the combined group of web developers and digital designers; that figure is not web-developer-only openings.

These figures describe U.S. labor statistics, not an individual salary or promise of a job. The BLS notes that tools and AI may increase productivity and allow some workers in other occupations to perform basic web development tasks. Outcomes vary by location, employer, experience, and role; the cited figures do not establish pay or demand outside the United States.

Start with the next small, complete project

Set up a browser, editor, and local files, then make a simple page with semantic HTML. Add CSS, adapt the layout for different screen sizes, and use JavaScript for a clear interaction. As your skills grow, make the project accessible, track changes, deploy it, and document what you learned. Once the fundamentals are in place, use the roles you are targeting to decide whether to study a framework, back-end development, or another specialty.
