Check camera access when the user starts the camera feature, explain why it is needed, and handle approval, denial, and failure as separate outcomes. Before demo day, test the exact device and deployment setup—and prepare a camera-free fallback so a permission prompt or hardware problem cannot derail the presentation.
What to check before asking for camera access
Camera permission is not a single cross-platform setting. iOS, Android, and browsers have different state models and recovery paths. In every case, request access in context—after the user chooses the camera feature—and keep the rest of the demo usable if access is unavailable.

| Environment | How to check and request | Recovery concern | Demo-specific check |
|---|---|---|---|
| iOS | Check AVAuthorizationStatus and request access when appropriate. |
The user can change access in Settings; the app also needs a camera usage description. | Test a fresh install and a previously denied state. |
| Android | Check runtime permission, show rationale when indicated, request access, and handle the result. | One-time grants and automatic resets mean an earlier grant may no longer be active. | Test grant, denial, and an expired temporary grant. |
| Browser | Call getUserMedia(); a Permissions API query can supplement preflight UI where supported. |
Secure context, origin, iframe policy, device availability, and constraints can all prevent capture. | Test the deployed HTTPS presentation URL, including its embedded route if applicable. |
Handle iOS permission states
Before starting capture, inspect AVCaptureDevice.authorizationStatus(for: .video). Apple defines four states:
notDetermined: The user has not decided. Request access at a moment that makes sense, such as immediately after they tap a camera button.authorized: Proceed with capture.denied: Explain that camera access can be changed in Settings and offer a way to continue without the camera. Do not assume another request will show the prompt again.restricted: Media capture is not permitted for the app. Do not promise that retrying the prompt will resolve it.
Add NSCameraUsageDescription to the app’s configuration with a clear explanation of why the feature needs the camera. Apple’s request API documentation warns that a missing usage-description key can raise an exception. If you update the interface after the access callback, do so on the main queue or MainActor. Users can change a previous choice in Settings, so check the current status when the feature is used rather than treating an earlier approval as permanent. See Apple’s authorization-status documentation and request-access documentation.

Handle Android runtime permission
Android camera permission is a runtime flow. Follow the documented sequence rather than assuming that declaring permission in the app is enough:
- Declare the camera permission your app needs.
- Explain why the camera feature needs access, then wait for the user to choose that feature.
- Check whether permission is currently granted.
- If
shouldShowRequestPermissionRationale()indicates it, show a brief rationale before requesting access. - Request permission and handle the result. If denied, keep non-camera parts of the demo usable and explain what the camera-dependent feature cannot do.
Starting with Android 11 (API level 30), users can grant camera access “Only this time.” Android also documents automatic permission resets for some unused apps. Treat a previous grant as temporary until your current check confirms it. Android 12 (API level 31) adds privacy indicators while the camera or microphone is in use. See Android’s runtime permission guidance.

getUserMedia() requires a secure context and user permission. HTTPS and localhost are secure contexts; for a deployed hackathon demo, use HTTPS. Check that the presenter opens the expected origin and that camera access is not blocked in that site’s settings. See MDN’s getUserMedia() reference.
If the demo is embedded in an iframe, the embedding page must allow camera access. Inspect the iframe’s allow attribute and the site’s Permissions-Policy header; policy can block access before a permission prompt appears. See MDN’s Permissions-Policy reference.

The Permissions API can report camera state as granted, denied, or prompt where supported. Use that information to improve preflight messaging, not as a substitute for handling the actual capture request: policy restrictions may appear as denied without prompting the user. A prompt can also remain pending if the user ignores it, so show a waiting state and let them cancel or continue with the non-camera part. See MDN’s Permissions.query() reference.

Show a useful message for each browser error
NotAllowedError: Access was denied, or the current context or policy does not allow it. Check site permission, the origin, and embedding policy.NotFoundError: No camera matches the request. Offer another path through the demo.NotReadableError: The browser, operating system, or hardware could not provide the device, even though permission was granted. Check whether another application is using or locking the camera.OverconstrainedError: The available camera cannot meet the requested constraints. Relax resolution or device requirements and retry.TypeErroror missingnavigator.mediaDevices: Check that the page is in a secure context and that the request constraints are valid.
These names come from the getUserMedia() error reference; presenting the likely cause is more useful than showing the same generic failure message for every error.

Run a permission-state preflight
Rehearse the states the audience or venue could expose—not just the happy path:
- Fresh install or browser profile where permission has never been decided.
- Previously denied permission and an existing grant.
- On Android, behavior after a one-time grant ends; on iOS, the Settings recovery instructions.
- No camera connected, and a camera another application is using or locking.
- The exact deployed HTTPS origin rather than only a local development server; if the presentation route is embedded, test that iframe route too.
- Constraints against the available camera, loosening exact resolution requirements unless the feature truly depends on them.
- A local sample image or prerecorded clip that can carry the central story if permission, hardware, or venue connectivity fails. This is a demo contingency, not a platform permission feature.
Keep the camera step optional where the demo allows it: rehearse how you will explain the feature without a live feed, then move on without spending presentation time troubleshooting a device.
