If your Android phone says an SD card is damaged, corrupted, or unreadable, first decide whether its files matter. Do not format the card if you still need anything on it: Google Android Help warns that formatting permanently deletes data. Try reversible checks—inspect and reseat the card, restart the phone, and check Settings—before considering a format or replacement. These phone-only steps may help restore access, but they cannot guarantee file recovery or prove whether a card or phone slot has failed.
Before fixing the SD card, protect the files
There are two different goals: making a card usable again and recovering what is already on it. Formatting may help address some card errors, but it is not a recovery method. Google Android Help states, “If you format your SD card, data will be permanently deleted.” Samsung also warns that formatting erases the card’s data.

- If you still need files that are not backed up: do not accept a format prompt or keep experimenting. Preserve the card and seek a recovery path with suitable access to it. The official guidance cited here does not establish a reliable phone-only method for recovering files from an unreadable card.
- If the files are backed up or no longer needed: you can try the reversible checks below, then consider formatting only if the phone detects the card and you accept losing its contents.
Try reversible checks on the phone
Inspect and reseat the card
If your phone has a removable SD card tray, follow its manual and power the phone off before removing the card. Check for visible damage or debris, then reinsert it carefully and make sure it is seated correctly. Samsung recommends removing and reinserting the card; Samsung UK also advises checking for damage or debris. If the card is visibly damaged and its contents matter, stop repeated attempts and prioritize preserving it.

Restart the phone, then open its storage settings and see whether the SD card appears. The menu labels differ by phone and software version, so look for Storage or a similar storage-management section rather than relying on one universal path.

If Settings shows the card but a file app does not, the card may be configured as internal (adoptable) storage. Google Files Help lists this as a possible explanation when a card is recognized in Settings but missing from Files by Google.
Check whether the card is portable or internal storage
Android supports both portable and internal storage. A portable card is intended to move between devices. A card set up as internal storage is tied to the phone and may be encrypted. Samsung says an adoptable-storage card cannot be removed for use elsewhere without resetting the phone and formatting the card.

Do not move or format a card configured as internal storage casually: doing so can make its contents inaccessible. If you are unsure which mode was selected, use the phone’s storage settings and the manufacturer’s guidance before changing anything.

Choose the next step based on what the phone detects

Format only when you accept losing the data
Formatting is an option for restoring a card’s use when its files have been backed up or are no longer needed. It permanently deletes the contents; it does not repair them in a way that recovers the old files.

Samsung gives this example on some devices: Settings → Device care → Storage → More options → Advanced → SD card → Format. The labels and path vary by model and software. Follow the instructions shown on your own phone, and do not proceed if you still need anything that has not been backed up.

Samsung recommends testing an unrecognized card with another device and says it may be damaged if the phone or tablet does not recognize it. Without another compatible device, the phone-only checks cannot conclusively identify whether the card, the phone’s card slot, or compatibility is the cause. Samsung suggests trying a new card when the existing one remains unrecognized.

Before replacing it, confirm that your phone supports removable SD cards and check the card type and capacity supported by that specific model. Not every Android phone has an SD slot, and compatibility varies. No reviewed official guidance promises that a phone app can repair physical flash-memory damage or recover files from a card the phone cannot read.
