A ZIP or repository does not, by itself, prove those operational pieces have moved.
Choose a code handoff that fits the work
For continuing development, a shared repository is usually more useful than sending a one-time archive: it gives both parties a place to coordinate changes and review work. For a one-off transfer, a downloaded project archive can provide a snapshot. Neither option should be treated as a complete operational handoff.

Transfer code from Lovable or Bolt
Lovable: use GitHub for ongoing collaboration
Lovable documents GitHub sync as a way to work with project code, collaborate, use a local IDE, review pull requests and deploy outside Lovable. See Lovable’s GitHub sync documentation. Before granting access, confirm the repository owner, the developer’s permission level and the version you intend to hand over.
Lovable: download a one-time code copy
Lovable’s code editor documentation describes downloading the full codebase as a ZIP on paid plans; Enterprise workspace administrators may restrict downloads. Check your current plan and workspace permissions before relying on this route. A code ZIP is distinct from ongoing Git sync and from Cloud-data export. See Lovable’s code documentation.

Bolt: export the project
Bolt’s Help Center describes opening the project title menu and selecting Export > Download. Check the current interface in your account, since labels can change. Bolt also recommends backing up a project before cleanup that could remove files. Its overview discusses GitHub for version control, backups and collaboration, as well as Bolt Cloud hosting and publishing; verify the current synchronization behavior and available options in Bolt before planning the handoff. Prepare a handoff point before sharing
- Record the current state. Note what is working, what is incomplete and any known bugs. Capture the current app or deployment state if that will help explain what the developer is receiving.
- Pause uncoordinated edits. Agree on a short handoff window so the owner and developer do not unknowingly make conflicting changes.
- Identify the exact code version. For a repository, record its owner, repository location, default branch and the branch or commit being handed over. For an archive, note when it was downloaded and where the copy was securely shared.
- Distinguish the live app from the work copy. State which environment is production and which copy the developer should change. Do not assume a code change is approved for live deployment.
Write a short project brief
Export tools do not establish that your project context is included automatically. Send a concise note alongside the code with the information a developer needs to orient themselves:

- What the app does, who uses it and its main user flows.
- What currently works, what is unfinished and the known bugs or limitations.
- How to install dependencies and run it locally, if you know the steps. Mark anything you have not verified as unverified rather than presenting it as fact.
- The first task you want the developer to take on, plus any constraints or decisions that are intentionally provisional.
- Where the relevant service, deployment and account information is held, and who can grant access.
Inventory the operational pieces separately
Code access and operational access are different. Make a list of the services the app relies on, then confirm who owns each account and how the developer can obtain the access needed for the agreed work. Lovable documents code handling separately from Cloud-data export, so do not infer that source-code access includes the app’s data.
- Backend and data: database, backend services, authentication provider, production data, backups and any migration or retention requirements.
- Integrations: payment, email or messaging, analytics, third-party APIs and scheduled tasks.
- Live operations: hosting or deployment target, domain registration and DNS, and the accounts that control production.
- Ownership and permissions: who owns each account, who can invite the developer, and what level of access is appropriate.
Share credentials without putting them in the code
Do not put private keys, API secrets or production credentials in frontend code, a chat transcript or a public repository. Agree on a secure secrets manager or the relevant provider’s access flow, and grant only the permissions needed for the task. If a credential has already been exposed, rotate it through the service that issued it and update the app’s configuration as needed. There is no single transfer method that fits every provider; use the one supported by the account owner and service.

Agree how changes return to you
Before work starts, decide how the developer will make changes and how you will approve them. With a repository workflow, agree on branches or pull requests, review responsibilities and testing expectations. Also decide who authorizes deployment, who maintains backups, and who controls the production domain and hosting accounts. Lovable documents repository collaboration and pull-request workflows; the exact arrangement remains a decision for you and your developer.

Do not select a deployment destination solely because the code came from one builder. First review the app’s stack, backend, data and integrations, then confirm which accounts and services it needs in production. Lovable documents external deployment from connected code, while Bolt documents its own hosting and publishing. Those options do not establish a universal best provider, or mean that the app’s data and account ownership transfer with its source code.
