A practical starting point is eight players with 12–16 GB of RAM and a fast, modern multi-core CPU. If Xbox or PS5 players must connect, keep the limit at eight or fewer and run a vanilla server: reports indicate that higher limits can make the server disappear from console listings.

What “growing” a 7 Days to Die server actually involves
There are three separate limits to consider:
- The configured slot limit: the value in
ServerMaxPlayerCountdetermines how many players the server will admit. - The hardware limit: CPU time, RAM, storage performance and upload capacity determine whether those players receive a stable simulation.
- The platform limit: console crossplay has a lower reported ceiling and stricter compatibility requirements than a PC-only server.
Changing the number in the configuration file only changes the first limit. It does not add CPU capacity, memory or bandwidth. A server that accepts more connections than its hardware can process will usually show rising latency, delayed world updates, stuttering during combat and disconnects rather than a clean “full” message.

Supported console generations
Current third-party compatibility guides report dedicated-server crossplay for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. PlayStation 4 and Xbox One are reported as unsupported. If anyone in your group uses an older console, confirm support with the game and hosting provider before changing server capacity; a larger slot count cannot overcome an unsupported platform.
Why older crossplay advice can be misleading
Some older coverage claimed dedicated-server crossplay was not live and tied it to update 1.2. That information is outdated. Later reports place crossplay support in updates after that point, including references to V2.0 in June 2025 and V3.0 “Dead Hot Summer”, although an exact release date was not verified here. Check the version shown by every client and by the server before troubleshooting a connection problem.

Crossplay imposes an eight-player ceiling
Several third-party guides report that a server allowing Xbox and PS5 connections is capped at eight players. They also report that setting the limit above eight can hide the server from console players without displaying a useful error. For a mixed PC-and-console group, treat eight as the maximum, not as a target to exceed experimentally.
Crossplay guides list these compatibility conditions:
ServerAllowCrossplay trueEACEnabled trueIgnoreEOSSanctions false- Vanilla game files, with no gameplay mods in the server’s
Modsfolder
One community wiki specifically warns that mods in the Mods folder can break console connections. If console users cannot see a server that PC users can join, remove server-side mods temporarily and retest before changing networking settings.
Increase the slot limit in serverconfig.xml
1. Stop the server and make a backup
Use your host’s stop control or shut down the dedicated-server process cleanly. Do not edit a live file while the server is writing settings. Copy serverconfig.xml to a dated backup location so you can restore the previous value if the server fails to start.

2. Open the correct configuration file
Find the serverconfig.xml file used by the active instance. The exact directory differs between self-hosted installations and managed hosts, so use the host’s file manager or the path specified in its startup configuration. Editing an unused sample file will have no effect.
3. Change ServerMaxPlayerCount
Search for the ServerMaxPlayerCount property and replace its number with the desired limit. Guides commonly report eight as the shipped value. For example, a PC-only server being tested for twelve simultaneous players would use:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →<property name="ServerMaxPlayerCount" value="12" />
Preserve the existing XML syntax, quotation marks and closing characters. Do not add a second property with the same name; duplicate entries can cause the server to read an unexpected value or reject the file.
4. Confirm related crossplay settings
Only do this when console access is required. Verify the four crossplay conditions listed above, and leave the server vanilla while diagnosing visibility. A PC-only server can use a different mod policy, but every player must still have compatible game files.

- Cooperate or Compete - Includes two player split screen mode, with support for up to 4 players online, in Player versus Player, co-op survival, or co-op creative modes
5. Save, restart and verify
Save the file, start the server and wait for the world to finish loading. Check the server’s status page, log output or in-game browser to confirm the advertised player limit. Have a second player join before inviting the whole group. If the displayed limit did not change, you probably edited the wrong instance, the host overwrote the file from a control panel template, or the XML failed validation; restore the backup, correct the syntax and repeat the restart.
6. Increase in small steps
Do not jump from eight to the largest number a guide mentions. Add a few slots, test normal exploration, then test a Blood Moon. Increase again only if the server maintains acceptable tick time, latency and memory headroom during the busiest event. Capacity is a performance decision, not just a configuration decision.

Hardware planning by target player count
No official developer hardware specification was found. The figures below are empirical community observations or hosting-vendor recommendations, so treat them as starting points rather than guarantees. Actual load varies with view distance, active chunks, zombies, mods, world size and player behavior.
| Concurrent players | CPU guidance | Memory guidance | Evidence and caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4–8 | Six cores at 4 GHz or higher; examples cited by community guides include Ryzen 5600X and Intel 12400 class processors | 12–16 GB | Community estimate for a small server; not an official requirement |
| 8–16 | Six to eight cores at 4.0 GHz or higher | 12–16 GB | Hosting-vendor recommendation; vendor opinion |
| 16–30 | Fast multi-core CPU with enough single-thread performance for simulation work | 32–48 GB | Community estimate; workload-dependent and not guaranteed |
A separate source reports 8 GB as a possible vanilla minimum, but that figure has low confidence and leaves little room for operating-system overhead, caches, world growth or a busy horde night. It is better treated as a boot threshold than as a sensible capacity target.

Clock speed matters as much as core count
Hosting guidance emphasizes six to eight cores with boost clocks above 4.0 GHz for roughly eight to sixteen players. It cautions against Xeon- or EPYC-class processors unless their boost clocks exceed 4.5 GHz. That is a vendor preference, not a universal rule: the practical lesson is to prioritize strong per-core performance and sustained clocks instead of buying a large number of slow server cores.
Use per-player estimates only for rough budgeting
One vendor estimates 150–300 MB of RAM per player for view distance, inventories and active chunks. Another estimate places upload usage at 50–100 KB/s per player. A separate estimate says a sixteen-player server can consume 3–5 TB of data per month. None of these figures identifies a publisher and year, so they should not be used as billing guarantees. Leave headroom for operating-system traffic, backups, updates and bursts during exploration rather than sizing exactly to the estimate.
Storage affects save and restart behavior
One hosting guide claims an NVMe Gen 4 drive can complete the same save operation in 100–200 milliseconds, but that result was not independently verified. Fast storage can still be useful for world loading, saves and recovery, yet it cannot compensate for an undersized CPU, insufficient RAM or a saturated uplink.
Why Blood Moon nights expose weak capacity
Zombie activity scales with the number of players. Guides report a default BloodMoonEnemyCount of eight enemies per player, so a full group can create a substantially larger simulation load than a quiet building session. Test every capacity increase during a Blood Moon or another deliberately busy event; daytime travel is not a reliable stress test.

Watch for delayed zombie reactions, rubber-banding, players taking damage before animations appear, server tick-time warnings and sudden memory growth. If those symptoms appear, lower the slot limit or reduce load-producing settings before inviting more players.

Lower ServerMaxWorldViewDistance
The default view-distance value is commonly reported as 10. Reducing ServerMaxWorldViewDistance to 6–8 can reduce CPU work per player because the server tracks fewer distant areas. Make one change at a time and explain the visual trade-off to players: a shorter server view can reduce how far terrain, entities and activity are simulated or delivered.

Keep zombie counts within the build’s safe range
Guides report 60 as a hard cap for MaxSpawnedZombies. Another guide warns that values above roughly 80 can cause frame-rate loss and lag, which conflicts with the reported cap. Do not treat the higher warning as permission to exceed the game’s accepted range. Use the value supported by your current build, and lower it if Blood Moon performance collapses.
Reduce load before adding hardware
- Lower world view distance before reducing the player limit if distant simulation is the dominant cost.
- Reduce zombie limits when combat events produce the spikes.
- Remove unnecessary server-side mods when diagnosing unexplained CPU or memory use.
- Schedule restarts and backups during low activity, not during a Blood Moon.
A practical capacity-growth plan
- Start conservatively: configure eight slots, use 12–16 GB of RAM and a modern high-clock multi-core CPU.
- Record a baseline: note CPU utilization, memory use, upload rate, latency and server-log warnings during ordinary play.
- Test a peak event: gather the largest group you currently have and run a Blood Moon, since enemy spawning scales with players.
- Change one variable: raise
ServerMaxPlayerCountby a small increment, or lower view distance/zombie settings, but do not change everything at once. - Repeat under the same conditions: compare the same activity and event so you can tell whether the change helped.
- Stop at the first sustained bottleneck: if CPU is saturated, memory is exhausted, upload is constrained or latency remains high, adding slots will reduce the experience.
For console crossplay, stop this process at eight slots. A PC-only server can continue testing higher values, but the hardware estimates for sixteen or more players are community and vendor guidance rather than a promise from the developer.
Choosing a limit for common server goals
| Goal | Recommended approach | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Small private group on PC | Begin at 4–8 slots and test before raising the limit | Matches the smallest community hardware estimates and leaves room for events |
| PC-only group approaching 16 players | Use a fast six- to eight-core CPU, 12–16 GB as a vendor starting point, and monitor Blood Moon performance | Simulation load, not the XML value, determines whether sixteen players are practical |
| Large PC-only community | Plan for 32–48 GB when targeting the 16–30-player range, then validate CPU and bandwidth separately | Community estimates associate this range with substantially higher memory demand |
| PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S together | Keep eight or fewer players, enable the reported crossplay settings and remain vanilla | Higher values are reported to hide the server from console players |
Troubleshooting after raising the limit
The server still shows the old number
- Confirm that the server was stopped before editing and restarted afterward.
- Check that you edited the active instance rather than a template or sample file.
- Search for duplicate
ServerMaxPlayerCountentries. - Inspect the startup log for XML parsing errors.
- Check whether the hosting panel rewrites the file from a saved configuration profile.
Console players cannot find the server
- Set the limit to eight or fewer.
- Verify
ServerAllowCrossplay true,EACEnabled trueandIgnoreEOSSanctions false. - Remove the contents of the server’s
Modsfolder for a clean vanilla test. - Confirm that every client is on a supported PC, PS5 or Xbox Series X|S edition and the same game version.
- Restart after each configuration change and allow the listing time to refresh.
Players connect but experience lag
Separate connection count from simulation load. Check CPU and memory during a Blood Moon, then reduce ServerMaxWorldViewDistance toward 6–8 or lower the supported zombie limit. If upload remains saturated, reduce the number of simultaneous players or move to a connection with more upstream capacity. Do not assume that adding RAM will fix a CPU or network bottleneck.
The server crashes or becomes unstable after expansion
Restore the last known-good serverconfig.xml, return to the previous slot count and reproduce the problem with no mods. Add players and settings back one at a time. This isolates whether the trigger is the slot count, a view-distance change, zombie spawning, a mod or a version mismatch.

What the available evidence does—and does not—prove
The configuration name and the reported shipped value are clear enough to guide an initial change, but there is no official developer hardware table establishing a guaranteed player count for a particular CPU or amount of RAM. The 16-player and 30-player ranges come from community and vendor experience. Bandwidth and per-player memory figures are also estimates without a named publisher and date. Treat every capacity number as a testable starting point, keep monitoring enabled, and publish a lower limit if your own peak-event results are worse than the estimates.
