How to Group Google Home Speakers and Bluetooth Speakers for Synchronized Audio

A Bluetooth speaker joins a Google Home group through a paired Nest or Home device. Follow the setup steps and learn how to handle playback delay.

Yes, you can play a Bluetooth speaker as part of a Google Home speaker group—but you cannot add the Bluetooth speaker directly. Pair it with a Google Nest or Home device, then add that Google device to the group. The Bluetooth speaker plays audio routed through its paired device, and may need group-delay adjustment if it is consistently out of sync.

How the Bluetooth speaker joins the group

The Nest or Home device—not the Bluetooth speaker—is the group member. Google’s instruction is to “add its paired Google Nest or Home device to the group” to include a Bluetooth speaker. The paired device relays group playback to the Bluetooth speaker, so it must remain part of the group and connected to that speaker.

This is different from using a speaker or streaming device that Google supports as a direct group endpoint. Google lists compatible Home and Nest speakers, supported displays and streaming devices, and Pixel Tablets attached to a Charging Speaker Dock. Its group guidance says first-generation Chromecast is not supported. Check Google’s current speaker-group device list for the latest compatibility details.

Pair the Bluetooth speaker and create a group

  1. Prepare the devices. Make sure the Nest or Home device is set up and connected, open the correct home in the Google Home app, and put the Bluetooth speaker in pairing mode.
  2. Pair the speaker. In Google Home, open the Nest or Home device tile and go to Settings > Audio. If prompted, select Paired Bluetooth devices > Enable pairing mode. Return to Audio, choose Default music speaker > Pair Bluetooth speaker, select the speaker, and tap Done. See Google’s Bluetooth speaker pairing instructions if the menu differs.
  3. Create or edit a speaker group. In the Google Home app, create a group and select the Nest or Home device that is paired with the Bluetooth speaker. Give the group a name and save it. Google says group creation is available in the app on a phone or tablet, not in Chrome; follow Google’s speaker-group setup instructions.
  4. Play audio on the group. Start playback on the speaker group. The paired Bluetooth speaker receives the media through its Nest or Home device.

Bluetooth limits and group compatibility

  • One Bluetooth playback connection per Google device: A Nest or Home device can play to one Bluetooth speaker or set of headphones at a time. It may remember multiple paired Bluetooth devices, but connects to only the most recently connected one.
  • Group endpoints are not all interchangeable: Google’s group feature covers listed Nest and Home speakers, supported displays and streaming devices, and a Pixel Tablet when attached to its Charging Speaker Dock. Chromecast (1st generation) is excluded.
  • Some devices can belong to only one group: If you use overlapping preset groups, Google says certain devices—including Nest Mini (2nd generation), Nest Audio, specified Chromecast with Google TV models, Nest Hub (2nd generation), Nest Hub Max, Nest Wifi point, and Pixel Tablet in Hub Mode—can belong to only one speaker group at a time. See Google Assistant’s grouping guidance.

Fix audio that is out of sync

Bluetooth can add playback delay, so sound in the Bluetooth speaker’s room may not line up perfectly with other rooms. Google recommends changing group delay correction only when the delay is consistent and significant—not for a brief or occasional mismatch. The setting applies to every group that includes the adjusted Google device.

  1. Start music on the group and listen between the out-of-sync devices. If the group has more than two devices, focus on one pair at a time.
  2. In Google Home, open the paired Nest or Home device’s Settings > Audio > Group delay correction control.
  3. Increase correction on the device that is playing last, then listen again. If synchronization gets worse, reset the correction to zero or try adjusting the other device.

Google’s undated help page gives typical delay ranges of 0–40 ms for speakers, 0–80 ms for soundbars, and 0–70 ms for receivers. Google describes soundbar and receiver delays as common, and notes that an individual model may fall outside its category’s typical range. These figures are not a guarantee for a particular product. See Google’s group delay correction guidance.

When a direct group device may be a better fit

If you want another room to join group playback without relying on a Bluetooth connection, choose a device Google lists as a direct group endpoint. The Bluetooth route is useful when you already have a Nest or Home device and want it to relay audio to a speaker, but it adds a paired-device connection and can introduce audible delay. Google does not provide a universal brand or model ranking for this setup.
