Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteGive an assignment as a conversation about an outcome, authority, support, and follow-up—not as a task dropped into someone’s inbox. Agree on what finished means, who owns the work, what decisions they can make, and when you will check in. Then review the result and recognize the person who did it.
How do you choose what to delegate?
Start with the work, not with whoever seems available. Consider its impact, the responsibilities of your role, the strengths and capacity of potential owners, and whether the assignment fits their priorities or could build a useful skill. Also consider whether the work will recur and whether you have time to train and review it.

The Management Center’s comparative-advantage approach uses impact, role, and strengths to help managers decide what to keep, delegate, develop, or deprioritize. Use it as a prompt for judgment, not a formula: delegation should not become a way to offload only tedious work or work you do not want.

Routine tasks, work that matches another person’s expertise, and development-aligned assignments may be good candidates. Sensitive information, personnel decisions, crisis work that requires your authority, and decisions central to your own role call for caution. You may still delegate a bounded piece of such work, but preserve necessary privacy, approvals, and decision rights.

What should you agree on before the work starts?
The Management Center recommends discussing the work’s what, when, why, who, where, and how, then agreeing on what success or “finished” means. Make the conversation specific enough that the person can begin without guessing, while leaving them room to choose an approach.

- Outcome: Name the deliverable or result and how you will judge whether it is complete.
- Purpose: Explain why the work matters and who will use or be affected by the result.
- Owner and scope: Identify one person responsible for driving completion and define what is—and is not—in scope.
- Authority: Clarify which decisions the owner can make independently and which require your input or an approver’s sign-off.
- Timing: Set the due date, interim milestones if useful, and any timing constraints.
- People and resources: Name collaborators, relevant information, tools, budget, or time available.
- Constraints and risks: Distinguish fixed requirements from choices the owner can make, and agree how to raise blockers.
- Support: Set check-ins and identify what kind of coaching or review would help.
Ask the assignee to describe what “finished” means in their own words. That reveals different assumptions before they turn into rework.

How do you clarify roles on shared work?
For a project with several contributors, a role framework can prevent gaps and duplicate effort. The Management Center’s MOCHA framework makes the manager and helper roles explicit:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Manager: Supports the project and holds the owner accountable.
- Owner: Drives the project and coordinates completion. Assign one owner.
- Consulted: Provides input or expertise.
- Helpers: Complete parts of the work; they may own substantial workstreams.
- Approver: Signs off on the result or specified decisions.
Another vocabulary is RACI: Responsible does the work, Accountable ensures completion, Consulted reviews or advises, and Informed receives updates. Asana’s guidance recommends a single Responsible and a single Accountable role for each task. MOCHA and RACI are alternatives; choose the one your team understands, define the decision owner, and avoid stacking both frameworks on a small assignment.

How do you follow up without micromanaging?
Agree on the check-in cadence before work begins. Match it to the assignment’s stakes and complexity, as well as the assignee’s experience and capacity. A routine task may need a milestone update; a high-risk or unfamiliar project may call for more frequent reviews. The point is to make support predictable, not to monitor every move.
Review work in progress at agreed milestones and ask questions that help the owner think through the work: What is on track? What is uncertain? What decision or resource would unblock you? Is the scope still realistic? If a risk could change the outcome, step in at the decision point you agreed on rather than silently taking the task back.
The Management Center describes the manager as a “spotter”: provide room to work while staying attentive enough to offer support when needed. Asana likewise advises focusing on results, allowing people to choose their approach, checking progress periodically, and retaining accountability for the final outcome. A shared task list or task-management tool can make the owner, due date, collaborators, and updates visible, but it does not replace the alignment conversation.
How should you close the assignment?
When the work is done, compare the result with the success criteria you agreed on. Give specific feedback, ask what the person learned and what should change next time, and capture any useful lessons for recurring work. Recognize the contributor to the people who need to know; do not let the manager’s oversight obscure who completed the work.
Effective delegation is a cycle of defining expectations, staying engaged, and creating accountability after delivery, adjusted to the context. The Management Center’s delegation worksheet offers a way to work through that cycle.
