To stop re-explaining a project every time you open Claude Code, keep its architecture and decisions in durable project files and load the relevant context at session start. Max Małecki’s llmwiki write-up describes one way to automate that workflow: generate a Markdown knowledge base from a repository, refine it over time, and inject selected material into CLAUDE.md. It is the author’s project account, not an independent product test.
Why a new coding session needs project context
A fresh AI coding session may not have the decisions, service relationships, or conventions established in an earlier one. Without that context, the assistant may need to rediscover how the repository fits together, or you may need to explain it again. A persistent project memory moves useful knowledge out of the temporary conversation and into files that can be reviewed and updated.

Małecki presents llmwiki as a command-line tool for building that kind of repository-specific reference. Its core idea is straightforward: extract useful project knowledge into Markdown, then make the appropriate parts available when Claude Code starts a session.

What llmwiki is described as generating
According to Małecki, llmwiki scans a repository and creates Markdown documentation intended to cover its domain and architecture. The described outputs include:
#1 Best Overall
- Boosts System Performance: 32GB DDR5 RAM laptop memory kit (2x16GB) that operates at 5600MHz, 5200MHz, or 4800MHz to improve multitasking and system responsiveness for smoother performance
- Accelerated gaming performance: Every millisecond gained in fast-paced gameplay counts—power through heavy workloads and benefit from versatile downclocking and higher frame rates
- Optimized DDR5 compatibility: Best for 12th Gen Intel Core and AMD Ryzen 7000 Series processors — Intel XMP 3.0 and AMD EXPO also supported on the same RAM module
- Trusted Micron Quality: Backed by 42 years of memory expertise, this DDR5 RAM is rigorously tested at both component and module levels, ensuring top performance and reliability
- ECC Type = Non-ECC, Form Factor = SODIMM, Pin Count = 262-Pin, PC Speed = PC5-44800, Voltage = 1.1V, Rank And Configuration = 1Rx8
- A map of services and their relationships, with Mermaid diagrams.
- API documentation derived from OpenAPI specifications.
- Information about integrations, configuration, feature flags, and runtime modes.
- YAML tags that help organize and retrieve entries.
- A cross-project executive summary and C4 landscape diagram.
The knowledge base is described as plain Markdown with YAML front matter. That makes the generated content inspectable rather than hidden in a proprietary database, and suitable for Git-based workflows or opening as an Obsidian vault. Those are author-described capabilities, not independently verified results.
How the Claude Code workflow fits together
The project write-up describes a cycle with three distinct jobs: build a baseline from the code, capture useful knowledge from work sessions, and inject relevant context into later sessions.

- Ingest the repository. Run llmwiki against the project to produce its initial documentation and knowledge base.
- Refine the stored knowledge. Re-running ingest is described as refining existing entries instead of discarding the prior material and starting over.
- Capture session learning. A Claude Code Stop hook can read qualifying session transcripts, extract analytical responses, and pass them to an
absorbcommand. - Inject context at startup. A separate
contextcommand places generated material between marker comments inCLAUDE.md. Claude Code can then receive that project information when a session begins.
This division matters: repository ingestion documents what the code currently contains, while session learning can preserve reasoning or decisions that may not be obvious from the files. The author also describes integrations with a Graymatter memory layer and a NanoClaw Discord bot; whether those are useful depends on a developer’s workflow.
What to choose: files, an automated wiki, or a memory service
Persistent context is not one single product category. The right approach depends on how much automation you need and how much control you want over stored information.

| Approach | Useful when | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Manually maintained project notes or prompt files | The project is small, the context changes infrequently, or the team wants direct editorial control. | Simple to inspect and version, but someone must keep the notes current and decide what to load. |
| Automated Markdown wiki with incremental updates and session hooks | The repository has enough architecture and ongoing decisions to justify automated documentation and capture. | Reduces manual collection, but generated material still needs review and stale facts must be corrected. |
| Managed project memory exposed through MCP | A team wants a memory service and tool-based retrieval rather than maintaining a repository of Markdown files. | Setup, storage, provider choices, inspectability, and data handling depend on the specific service. |
| General fact retrieval or temporal/entity graph memory | The memory spans people, entities, or changing facts beyond one codebase. | It may be less directly tailored to repository documentation; retrieval behavior and maintenance vary by implementation. |
When evaluating any option, check whether its content is scoped to a project, can be inspected and version-controlled, and has a clear way to detect drift from the live code. Also consider retrieval precision, local versus remote processing, model-provider flexibility, ongoing maintenance, and token or API costs. These criteria are more useful than treating any one memory design as universally best.
Persistent context can become stale
Saving context solves the problem of losing useful knowledge between sessions, but it creates a maintenance problem: a once-correct description can outlive the code it describes. Repository ingestion and incremental refinement may help, but they do not remove the need to verify consequential facts—especially service boundaries, API behavior, configuration, and security assumptions.

Keep generated documentation reviewable, and treat it as a guide rather than an authority when it conflicts with the current implementation. Related project write-ups describe drift tracking as a design concern, but those descriptions do not establish that any particular tool detects every outdated statement.

Małecki says llmwiki offers an Ollama backend for NDA code or air-gapped use cases, and describes it as an option for keeping client code on the machine. That is a configuration option, not a blanket guarantee: data locality depends on the backend and the full workflow being used.

The author also reports a baseline security audit addressing filesystem path traversal, a fenced LLM prompt pipeline, a loopback-only Ollama default, and symlink time-of-check/time-of-use handling. The write-up points readers to the project’s security documentation, but does not provide an independent audit report or certification. Treat these as author-reported measures, and review the current project documentation and configuration before relying on them for sensitive code.
Installation and version details
At the time of Małecki’s post, llmwiki was described as written in Go, MIT licensed, and at version 1.0.0. The post lists go install github.com/emgiezet/llmwiki@latest and a shell installation command, and says binaries were available for macOS arm64 and amd64 and Linux arm64 and amd64. Release details and installation instructions can change; consult the author’s project write-up and the project’s current release information before installing.
The post estimates that materialize uses approximately 5–15K tokens, compared with 50–100K for a full ingest, in the workflow the author describes. This is an author estimate, not a controlled benchmark or a general performance guarantee.

A persistent Markdown knowledge base is most compelling when a codebase has recurring architectural questions, useful decisions are repeatedly lost between sessions, and the team is willing to review the generated notes. If only a few stable facts matter, a concise manually maintained CLAUDE.md may be enough. If you adopt automation, decide which information should be captured, who checks it, and how it is corrected when the code changes.
