ChatGPT and Claude do not automatically share their built-in memories. To give both assistants access to the same information, connect each to a common external memory service that supports both apps, then select the same memory project in each. SharedMemory documents this setup through a remote Model Context Protocol (MCP) connector, but its published instructions do not establish that connecting both assistants takes two minutes.
What “shared memory” means here
Each assistant’s built-in memory is separate from the other’s. A common external store offers another approach: compatible assistants can access the same saved information through an integration. SharedMemory’s v2 documentation describes an MCP connector for this purpose, with a separate authorization flow in each app. This is one implementation, not a universal feature available in every AI assistant.

The connector endpoint documented by SharedMemory is https://api.sharedmemory.ai/mcp. Its available operations include saving, finding, retrieving, updating, and deleting memory. The service says the connector routes these tools through the same memory pipeline as its direct API calls; that is the vendor’s description, not independent performance testing. #1 Best Overall
- In ChatGPT, open Settings → Connectors.
- Select Add a custom connector.
- Enter
https://api.sharedmemory.ai/mcp, then select Connect. - Sign in to SharedMemory and choose the project you want ChatGPT to access.
- Review the requested access and approve the connection.
Once connected, try saving a useful preference—for example, “Remember that I prefer TypeScript with strict mode and tabs for indentation.” You can then ask a follow-up such as, “What did I tell you about my deployment process?”
Connect Claude to the same project
SharedMemory documents these steps for Claude on the web and Claude Desktop. Claude Code uses a different configuration path, so these menu instructions do not apply to it. SharedMemory’s Claude setup guide

- In Claude, open Settings → Integrations.
- Under Custom integrations, choose Add integration, then Custom MCP server.
- Enter
https://api.sharedmemory.ai/mcpand select Connect. - Sign in to SharedMemory and choose the same project you selected for ChatGPT.
- Review and allow the connection.
Test it by asking Claude to recall something you saved through ChatGPT. The key configuration is selecting the same project in both apps; authorizing two connectors but pointing them at different projects will not give them the same memory space.
How this differs from built-in memory and transfers
| Option | What it provides | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT Projects | Keeps related chats, files, and instructions together for continuing work in ChatGPT. | The cited OpenAI documentation does not describe Projects as a cross-provider shared memory store. OpenAI: Using Projects in ChatGPT |
| Claude memory | Claude’s own memory feature, including separate project memory spaces and controls to pause or reset memory. | It is not, by itself, live shared retrieval with another assistant. Anthropic: Understanding Claude’s personalization features |
| Claude memory import/export | An experimental way to move memories between providers, documented for Free, Pro, Max, and Team on the web and Claude Desktop, subject to a legacy-experience caveat. Anthropic’s article is dated September 2, 2026. | A transfer is not the same as ongoing, live access to one shared store; Anthropic says imported information may not always be incorporated successfully. Anthropic: Import and export your memory from Claude |
| External MCP memory | Compatible assistants can access a common external project after each app is connected and authorized. | It does not mean all assistants support MCP or share their built-in memories automatically. SharedMemory connector documentation |
For developers building an application, Anthropic also documents a memory tool whose handler must be implemented by the application; storage may use files, databases, cloud storage, or encrypted files. This is a development route, not a consumer setting that automatically syncs assistants. Anthropic: Memory tool

Check permissions and protect sensitive information
SharedMemory says it uses OAuth 2.1, issues app-scoped tokens, displays requested scopes on the consent screen, and lets users revoke a connector from Dashboard → Connectors. Before approving, read the scopes and consider whether the chosen memory project contains information that assistant should access. The available documentation does not establish that all personal or sensitive information is appropriate to store with a third-party service.

- ChatGPT reports “Connection failed”: SharedMemory says an incomplete consent flow can cause this error. Reconnect and complete authorization; the OAuth code is single-use.
- The browser redirect blocks Claude setup: SharedMemory identifies a blocked redirect as a possible setup issue. Allow the authorization flow to finish, then check Claude’s integration settings.
- Claude connects but tools do not appear: SharedMemory advises toggling the connector off and on if tools have not appeared after 30 seconds.
- An assistant cannot recall a saved item: Confirm both apps are authorized for the same SharedMemory project, then retry a direct question about the saved detail.
- You no longer want an app to have access: Revoke its connector from SharedMemory’s Dashboard → Connectors.

How long setup takes
The “in 2 minutes” duration is not established for connecting two consumer assistants. SharedMemory’s general developer quickstart says its onboarding route takes under five minutes, but that is not a measured time for completing both app connections. The actual steps include signing in, choosing a project, and approving access separately in each assistant. SharedMemory developer quickstart
