Show the agent the page in the state where the problem appears, point to the affected area, explain what is wrong and what should happen instead, then ask it to verify the change in the browser. A screenshot helps communicate appearance, but it does not reveal the code-level cause or prove that a fix works.
Give the agent a specific page, state, and goal
Start with the route or URL and describe the state you want it to inspect. For an interaction issue, include the steps needed to reproduce it: open the menu, submit the form, or resize the browser. Then state the observed problem and the acceptance condition—the visible or behavioral result that would count as fixed.

For example: “At 390 px wide, the last navigation link wraps beneath the logo. Keep the logo on its own row and move the links into a menu button.” This is more actionable than “make the header look better”: it identifies the viewport, the problem, and the desired outcome.
Choose evidence that answers the question

A screenshot is useful for visual context; an accessibility snapshot exposes structured page content and element references that can help target interactions. Playwright recommends combining screenshots and snapshots when both appearance and page structure matter. Its screenshot tools can capture a viewport, a selected element, or the full scrollable page. Anchor the request to the affected area
If your browser-agent setup supports selecting an element or adding an element comment, use that context rather than making the agent guess which part of the page you mean. In Visual Studio Code, browser tools let you add selected elements and element comments to chat; selected-element context can include HTML, CSS, and an optional screenshot. These are VS Code capabilities, not a guarantee that every coding agent offers the same controls. See Visual Studio Code: Use browser tools with agents.
Keep the request concrete and focused. VS Code’s documentation gives examples such as “Collapse this navigation into a menu button on narrow screens.” and “Align these fields and show validation errors below each input.” For a larger task, separate distinct changes so the agent can make and check them without confusing one acceptance condition with another.

Use a repeatable edit-and-check loop
- Name the route and state. Give the URL or route and explain how to reach the relevant page state.
- Show the rendered problem. Open or share the page. Add a viewport or element screenshot when appearance is central; use selected-element context if your integration supports it.
- Describe the defect and desired result. Identify the affected area, explain what you observe, and state how the result should look or behave.
- Ask the agent to change the code and inspect the running page. Visual Studio Code describes this browser-based inspect, edit, and verify cycle. Its example prompt is: “Start the application, open it in the browser, test the sign-up flow, and fix any issues you find. Verify the fix before finishing.” Visual Studio Code documentation.
- Repeat the relevant check. For a responsive issue, inspect the pertinent desktop and mobile widths. For a form, exercise valid and invalid states. Ask the agent to say what it checked and what it observed; do not treat an edit alone as verification.
When the first fix does not work
Capture the page at the moment the failure occurs and include the action that triggered it. Add structural or console context when it helps distinguish what happened. For a failed click, an exception may not reveal that an overlay is covering the control; a screenshot can provide that context. Selenium’s AI-agent guidance discusses this example and cautions against responding to intermittent failures simply by lengthening timeouts or adding sleeps, which can hide rather than address the cause. If you are using Playwright MCP snapshots, take a fresh snapshot after the page changes: element references from a snapshot are valid only until the page changes. Playwright: Snapshots. When a failure is intermittent, repeat the triggering action rather than claiming it is resolved after a single successful attempt.

What to say when you finish
Ask for a concise verification report: the route and state checked, the viewport or interaction used, and whether the expected result appeared. That makes the outcome auditable and keeps the scope honest: a check at one width does not verify every responsive layout, and a passing form submission does not cover its invalid state.
