Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

That gives multiple tools a shared source for project conventions—but it does not sync chat transcripts or each tool’s private auto-memory.
Why an agent forgets between sessions
A coding agent’s context depends on its setup, not just its model. Cursor describes an agent as a combination of a model, tools, and a harness that includes system instructions and supplied context. When a new session starts—or you switch tools—the context available to the agent can change. A decision explained only in an earlier conversation may not be present.

The practical fix is to separate durable project knowledge from session history. Put facts that teammates and tools should reuse in repository instructions, then use each tool’s own documented features for anything that belongs only to that tool.

What should go in a shared project instruction file?
Create a root-level AGENTS.md for concise, durable guidance that applies across the repository. Include information an agent should not have to rediscover or infer, such as:
#1 Best Overall
- How to install dependencies and run the project’s tests, builds, or checks.
- Architecture pointers: where important components live and how they relate.
- Project naming conventions and established implementation patterns.
- Decisions that are not obvious from the code, including relevant constraints.
Keep it maintained by the team. It is an instruction file, not a transcript or a complete copy of the codebase. Do not put secrets in a committed file: repository instructions provide context, not a secure storage mechanism.
How the different memory and context options fit together
| Option | Best for | How it is shared | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
Repository AGENTS.md |
Team-shared project facts and conventions | Version-controlled with the repository; Codex documents discovery and instruction layering. | File support and precedence vary by tool and version. |
| Tool-specific auto-memory | Learnings and preferences accumulated by an agent | Claude Code documents auto-memory as per-repository and shared across worktrees. | It is not automatically a universal memory layer for other tools. |
| Tool-specific instructions or imports | Extra rules or compatibility with a tool’s instruction loader | Claude Code supports CLAUDE.md; it can import AGENTS.md. |
Precedence and configuration affect what loads. |
| Documentation skills or MCP | Current vendor and API documentation | Google lists Gemini Docs MCP support for several coding tools. | Current documentation access does not retain private project decisions. |
Set up the shared file and tool-specific instructions
Codex: use instruction layering
OpenAI documents that Codex reads AGENTS.md files before work and supports global instructions alongside project guidance and closer overrides. Keep repository-wide rules in the root file; put service- or directory-specific rules nearer to the code they govern. Confirm the instruction chain in the running tool rather than assuming every expected file was read. See OpenAI’s Codex instructions guide.

Claude Code: distinguish instructions from auto-memory
Claude Code has two different mechanisms: human-written CLAUDE.md instruction files and Claude-authored auto-memory for learnings and patterns. Auto-memory is useful for tool-specific context, but it does not become shared with other coding tools automatically.
Claude Code’s ability to read AGENTS.md depends on the installed version and project-instruction configuration. Anthropic’s documentation describes a minimum version for direct reading and a precedence condition: if CLAUDE.md or CLAUDE.local.md exists in the working directory or an ancestor, AGENTS.md may not load by default. If the common file must be included in that setup, Anthropic documents importing it from CLAUDE.md with @AGENTS.md. Check the current Claude Code memory documentation, your installed version, and the loaded context shown by /context or the documented setting.
Cursor: treat supplied context as part of the harness
Cursor’s explanation of agent harnesses makes an important point: the agent’s available context includes system instructions and what is supplied to it. Do not assume a project file or another tool’s memory has been loaded just because it exists in the repository. Check Cursor’s current project-instruction behavior and confirm the context available in the session. See Cursor’s explanation of agent harnesses.
Gemini API work: add live documentation when that is the missing context
If the problem is stale knowledge of Gemini APIs rather than forgotten project decisions, Google documents agent skills and a Gemini Docs MCP server. Its setup page lists Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, and VS Code support, with configuration examples for several coding tools, and recommends root-level project rules. Documentation retrieval can supply current API information; it is not a substitute for the repository’s own conventions and decisions. Google’s setup page was last updated October 6, 2026 UTC: Gemini API tools and setup.

Verify what a fresh session actually knows
Run a small check in each tool after setting up its instructions. This is a practical verification step, not proof that context is synchronized between tools.

Best Value
- Start a fresh session in the target tool.
- Ask it to report which project instruction files it loaded.
- Ask it to summarize one deliberately documented convention, such as the project’s test command or a naming rule.
- Compare the answer with the repository file and the tool’s context or configuration view. For API documentation, ask it to retrieve a current schema through the configured documentation resource and verify the result against that source.
- If a newly installed skill or documentation server is not detected, follow the tool’s setup guidance; Google’s Gemini setup documentation, for example, advises restarting a tool when a new skill or server is not recognized.
Keep the memory safe and useful
- Commit only durable project guidance that is appropriate for everyone with repository access; never store credentials or other secrets in it.
- Review agent-written memories before promoting their contents into shared instructions. A one-off correction may not be a durable team rule.
- Use settings or enforced controls for actions that must be prohibited. Anthropic distinguishes behavioral context in
CLAUDE.mdfrom enforced client settings; prose instructions alone are not a security boundary.
