This is an interpretation of the “Steam Machine trick” in the headline, not a confirmed account of a particular PC setup. Big Picture also works on a regular monitor, and it supports keyboard and mouse as well as a controller.
What the Steam Machine-style setup actually changes
The practical trick is an interface and display change, not a special Linux distribution or hardware conversion. Steam Big Picture puts the library and Steam controls in a TV-friendly full-screen mode. Valve describes it as a way to play from the couch with a game controller, while also allowing use on a usual computer display. Steam Support: Big Picture mode.

That distinction matters: a Linux PC running Steam is not thereby an officially supported SteamOS device. Steam Support names Steam Deck, Steam Machine, Steam Frame, and Legion Go S as “Powered by SteamOS” devices, and says support may be limited on other hardware. Use the PC’s existing keyboard and mouse to start Steam, or connect a controller if you prefer to navigate from the couch. A controller is optional; Big Picture supports both input styles. Valve: Big Picture setup.
Valve’s living-room PC guidance also mentions small size, low noise, USB connectivity, Wi-Fi, and case design as useful qualities for a dedicated setup. Those are design considerations, not requirements for using Big Picture on an existing desktop. Valve: Big Picture setup.

Open Steam Big Picture
From the regular desktop session, open Steam and activate Big Picture using Steam’s Big Picture control. Valve’s support documentation describes the mode and its intended TV/controller use, but the cited setup material does not establish a single current menu path that applies to every Steam version or Linux desktop. Steam Support: Big Picture mode.
Once it is open, browse the library and launch games as usual. If you need the desktop—for settings, other applications, or troubleshooting—exit Big Picture and return to the existing session. The precise navigation depends on the current Steam interface and input device.
Choose how console-like you want startup to be
Keep the desktop and open Big Picture when you want it
This is the least specialized approach: the PC continues to start into its normal Linux desktop, and you open Big Picture for TV gaming. It avoids making startup behavior dependent on an unverified desktop-specific autostart recipe, and it leaves the usual desktop readily available.

Launch directly into a full-screen gaming session
For a more appliance-like startup, some setups use Gamescope, a Wayland compositor, as part of Steam’s launch path. ValveSoftware’s Gamescope wiki documents this Steam integration command:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
gamescope -e -- steam -tenfoot -steamos
The upstream wiki says Gamescope can run on a virtual terminal or nested inside another Wayland or X11 session. Its main page was last edited July 20, 2021, so treat the command as documented integration—not a current, universal autostart guide or a guarantee that it will work unchanged on a particular distribution. ValveSoftware Gamescope Wiki.
Direct startup depends on your distribution, desktop session, GPU and driver, and installed Steam and Gamescope versions. The cited documentation does not verify a one-size-fits-all login procedure. Before changing session or login settings, confirm the relevant instructions for your specific Linux setup and keep a way to return to the desktop.

What Gamescope’s 4K example does—and does not—promise
The Gamescope wiki also gives this 4K-oriented example:
gamescope -e -d -w 3840 -h 2160 -- steam -tenfoot -steamos
Those width and height values specify a 3840 × 2160 game-session size in the example; they do not guarantee that the PC, driver, Gamescope session, TV connection, or display will deliver 4K output. The wiki also discusses hardware-plane behavior in the context of running on a virtual terminal. Actual output and behavior depend on the system. ValveSoftware Gamescope Wiki.

No. Big Picture is the direct route to Steam’s TV-friendly interface on a Linux PC with Steam. Installing SteamOS is a separate decision, and Valve’s current support information does not establish that every ordinary Linux gaming PC is an officially supported SteamOS device. Use the SteamOS device list and support caveat as the boundary of Valve’s stated support, not as a guarantee about other hardware. Steam Support: SteamOS installation and repair.
