It does not secure a business by itself: results depend on which data you connect, how detections and workflows are configured, who operates them, and how well you manage cloud costs and data retention.
What Microsoft Sentinel is—and what it is not
Microsoft Sentinel is a cloud-native security information and event management (SIEM) service. Microsoft describes it as supporting data ingestion, monitoring, alerting, threat hunting, investigation, response, and connections to other products and services. Its broader product framing also includes data-lake, graph, and agent-oriented capabilities; those are Microsoft’s descriptions of the platform, not independent proof of security outcomes. Microsoft Sentinel overview and Microsoft’s Sentinel product page explain its current positioning.

In practical terms, Sentinel is a workspace and toolset for security operations, not a guarantee that attacks will be prevented or that incidents will be found automatically. It can help teams correlate telemetry and apply analytics, threat intelligence, user and entity behavior analytics (UEBA), and security orchestration, automation, and response (SOAR). Those capabilities are useful only when relevant data is available and detections, investigation practices, and response actions are maintained.
How it can change security operations
A typical deployment connects data from users, devices, applications, infrastructure, and cloud or on-premises environments. The team then uses security content—such as analytics rules, hunting queries, workbooks, and automation—to monitor activity and investigate alerts. Microsoft documents these capabilities and packaged content, but an organization still needs to decide what to collect and how to operate it. Microsoft Sentinel solutions
#1 Best Overall
- Potential operational benefit: A shared place to correlate data from connected sources can help analysts build a more complete incident picture.
- Work that remains: Teams must onboard sources, check connector prerequisites, tune detections, review false positives, define escalation paths, and test automated actions.
- Evidence boundary: Microsoft promotes faster investigations and lower total cost of ownership, but the cited product materials do not establish a guaranteed reduction in incident response time, cost, breach probability, or staffing needs.
Connector counts in Microsoft materials are not consistent: one overview says “350+” out-of-the-box connectors, while partner integration guidance says “more than 400.” The pages do not reconcile scope or timing, so treat both as vendor-published figures rather than a settled total. Check the live connector catalog for the sources your business needs instead of relying on either headline count. Microsoft Sentinel overview; Microsoft partner integration guidance
What to evaluate before adopting Sentinel
Telemetry coverage and onboarding
List the identity, endpoint, cloud, application, and infrastructure systems that matter to your threat model and compliance obligations. For each, confirm that a suitable connector exists and determine its permissions, configuration requirements, licensing, and any additional charges. Connector availability alone does not establish that a source is covered: validate what events are collected and whether they arrive in a usable format. Microsoft data connector documentation

Detection and response ownership
Assign people to maintain analytics rules, investigate alerts, and approve or monitor automated response actions. Decide how the team will handle exceptions and false positives, and test workflows before enabling actions that affect accounts, devices, or business systems. Sentinel provides security content and automation mechanisms; the platform documentation does not say those eliminate the need for human ownership. Microsoft automation documentation

Determine which records will be ingested, where they will be stored, which data tier will be used, and how long analysts need them to remain available. Microsoft says Sentinel inherits Azure Monitor immutability practices while also allowing deletion for compliance purposes. That description alone does not establish that a deployment meets a particular law, contract, or retention policy; validate the configuration against your organization’s obligations. Azure portal transition
Microsoft says Sentinel will no longer be supported in the Azure portal after March 31, 2027, and will be available in the Defender portal. This is a portal change, not a discontinuation of Sentinel. If your team still works in the Azure portal, include the move in operational planning and follow Microsoft’s current migration instructions. There is no single business-wide price that applies to every Sentinel deployment. Microsoft’s pricing materials describe analytics and data lake tiers, with pay-as-you-go or commitment options for analytics. The bill depends on factors such as data volume, tier, retention, and potentially supporting Azure resources; some data types may be free while associated raw logs are chargeable. Treat pricing-page figures as estimates because region, agreement, currency, and taxes can affect the amount. Use Microsoft’s current pricing materials and estimator for a deployment-specific estimate. Microsoft Sentinel pricing; Microsoft Sentinel billing documentation
Microsoft’s billing documentation describes a 31-day trial that waives eligible Sentinel and Log Analytics ingestion and analysis charges up to its limit, subject to workspace eligibility and exclusions. It does not make every Sentinel-related or supporting Azure cost free. Confirm current eligibility and included usage before using a trial estimate in a budget. Microsoft Sentinel billing documentation
The pricing page also lists a 50 GB analytics commitment tier as a public-preview offer with promotional pricing from October 1, 2025, through December 31, 2026; it says customers signing during that window could lock promotional pricing through March 31, 2027. These are time-limited terms, not a general or permanent price guarantee. Verify the live offer and applicable terms before making a commitment. Microsoft Sentinel pricing
A practical decision checklist
Before selecting Sentinel or another SIEM, compare the operational fit—not just the feature list:
- Can it collect the organization’s priority identity, endpoint, cloud, application, and infrastructure data?
- What connector permissions, licensing, configuration, and normalization work will onboarding require?
- Do its detection, investigation, and automation workflows fit the team’s incident process and capacity?
- Which records need analytics access, and which can use a lower-cost long-term storage tier?
- What is the estimated total cloud cost at realistic ingestion volumes, including retention and supporting services?
- What portal transition, migration, or compatibility work will be required?
- Does the organization have staff to configure and operate the service, or will it need implementation or managed operations support?
These checks follow from Microsoft’s documented capabilities, integrations, billing model, and portal roadmap; they are a decision framework, not an independently tested comparison of SIEM vendors.
