To get started, confirm that State of Decay 2: Juggernaut Edition is included with Game Pass for your account and region, install it, and follow the in-game tutorial. Then build a stable community before taking on the campaign’s biggest threats. Install and launch the game. If a PC installation or download fails, Undead Labs suggests opening Microsoft Store Library and selecting Get Updates, then trying installation through the Xbox app or the game’s Microsoft Store product page. These are troubleshooting options, not steps every player needs.

What should I do first?
Choose your starting survivor pair and play the tutorial. Undead Labs calls it short and recommends it for a first run; it covers combat, scavenging, character inventory, and blood plague. Your initial pair carries into the main game, so take a moment to choose before proceeding.
Follow the early objectives marked with orange exclamation indicators. If you miss an explanation or want to review a mechanic, open the pause menu and select the How to Play tab. You can also check controls and accessibility settings if the defaults do not suit you.
Build a sustainable community before rushing the campaign
The game is not only about fighting zombies. Survivors have different skills and burdens, and your decisions about scavenging, supplies, and your base affect whether the community can keep going. The official State of Decay 2 Player Guide says the opening focus is building up the community so it is not constantly at risk from threats such as zombies or starvation.

Which difficulty should you choose?
Green is a reasonable starting point if you want more room to learn the systems. Undead Labs describes it as a more relaxed option, with lower enemy damage, longer combat stamina, rarer freak zombies, cheaper crafting and construction, and more resources from rucksacks. Choosing Green or Standard for a first run is guidance based on those official descriptions, not a tested ranking.
The game offers Green, Standard, Dread, Nightmare, and Lethal. You can adjust three difficulty areas separately rather than treating difficulty as one setting:

Should you play solo or in co-op?
Solo play lets you pause; multiplayer does not. If you want help from friends, the game supports a host plus up to three other players. Multiplayer must be enabled, and players need an Xbox account; the official support material describes cross-play. The multiplayer support page explains how to join or host.

Co-op is optional, not a prerequisite for learning the campaign. The official game overview also describes Heartland, a story-driven return to Trumbull Valley, and Daybreak, a wave-survival mode for up to four players. Both are included in Juggernaut Edition, but neither needs to be your first session.
Adjust controls if needed
To remap controls, open Settings > Controls > Remap Controls. The Xbox controller’s right stick, View button, and Menu button cannot be remapped. Consult Undead Labs’ control customization guidance for details.
What to expect from the game now
Undead Labs’ support page states that State of Decay 2 received its final content update in October 2024. Its tutorial and support guidance remain useful for getting started, but do not expect that notice to promise future content updates.
