Start Star Wars Outlaws by checking the settings, choosing a comfortable difficulty, and treating stealth and Nix as your first answers to danger. Kay Vess is often outnumbered, but patrol observation, distractions, alternate entrances, and syndicate reputation can turn a locked-down compound into a manageable route. This guide keeps the advice spoiler-light while covering your first-session priorities, platform choices, PC requirements, the official trial, and practical ways to recover when an approach fails.
What Star Wars Outlaws is before you begin
Star Wars Outlaws is an open-world Star Wars game set between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. You play Kay Vess, a scoundrel accompanied by Nix. Ubisoft describes a mix of blaster combat, stealth, gadgets, distractions, syndicate missions, reputation decisions, speeder exploration, and Trailblazer space dogfights. Ubisoft lists August 30, 2024 as the release date, with Ubisoft as publisher and Massive Entertainment as developer.

The game is built around choosing how to approach a problem rather than forcing every encounter into a firefight. A guarded location may be approached through stealth, a different entrance, a gadget-assisted distraction, or a later return after your syndicate reputation improves.

Review every settings category
Open the Settings menu before starting. The official beginner guide identifies five relevant groups: Gameplay, Cognitive, Color, Vision, and Hearing. Spend a few minutes checking them instead of waiting until a difficult sequence exposes a problem.
#1 Best Overall
- Explore the galaxies in familiar planets and new planets with the first open world game of Star Wars
- Color: review the color-blind options if enemy, objective, or interface colors are hard to distinguish.
- Hearing: check text-to-speech and other audio-related assistance if you need information presented in another way.
- Vision: look for larger subtitles and other display adjustments that make conversations and prompts easier to follow.
- Gameplay: confirm control behavior and the available experience options before you enter the first serious encounter.
Labels and behavior can change with updates, so use the current in-game menu as the authority if it differs from an older guide. The official beginner advice is available in Star Wars: Tips and Tricks.
Choose a difficulty you can change later
Under the Gameplay Experience options, the guide lists Story, Regular, and Hard. These choices affect player health and enemy difficulty. There is no evidence that one setting is universally best: choose Story if you want the least combat pressure, Regular for the intended middle ground, or Hard if you already enjoy demanding encounters. The cited guide says you can change these options during play, so your first choice is not permanent.
Confirm your control priorities
Before leaving the opening area, learn the inputs for movement, aiming, crouching or cover, using Nix, and opening the pause menu. You do not need to memorize every gadget immediately. You do need to be able to stop, observe, command Nix, and retreat without searching for a button while enemies are moving.
Use a repeatable stealth routine
Observe before crossing open ground
When Kay is outnumbered, stealth is a useful default. Stop at cover and watch patrol routes before moving. Note which enemies overlap each other, where an alarm could be raised, and whether a camera, terminal, or other piece of equipment creates a danger zone. Waiting for a patrol to separate is usually safer than improvising in the middle of a group.
Move from cover to cover
Plan a short chain of safe positions rather than a single dash to the objective. If a route exposes Kay to several sight lines at once, back up and look for a different angle. A failed stealth attempt does not mean the entire location must become a prolonged gunfight; break line of sight, relocate, and reassess.

- Experience an original scoundrel story. Live the high-stakes lifestyle of an outlaw. Turn any situation to your advantage with Nix by your side: fight with your blaster, overcome enemies with stealth and gadgets, or find the right moments to distract enemies and gain the upper hand.
- Embark on high-stakes missions. Take on high-risk, high-reward missions from the galaxy’s crime syndicates. Steal valuable goods, infiltrate secret locations, and outwit enemies as one of the galaxy’s most wanted. Every choice you make influences your ever-changing reputation.
- Jump into the pilot seat. Pilot your ship, the Trailblazer, as you engage in thrilling dogfights with the Empire and other foes. Find the right opportunities to chase, evade, and attack to get the upper hand.
Deal with the alarm risk first
The beginner guide specifically advises prioritizing enemies marked as alarm risks. If one guard can bring reinforcements or escalate the encounter, that guard determines the order of your actions. Use Nix, a distraction, or a safer flank to prevent the alarm before dealing with less urgent targets.
Make Nix part of every plan
Nix is more than a story companion. The official guide says he can reveal enemy positions, distract or attack enemies, sabotage equipment, disable alarms, and fetch items. Treat his abilities as a scouting and control toolkit rather than a button you press only when prompted.
Scout with Nix
Use Nix to identify enemy positions before Kay leaves cover. This gives you information about patrol timing and helps separate an alarm threat from guards who can wait. Scouting is especially valuable when the objective marker points toward a compound whose outer walls hide the interior layout.
Create a gap with a distraction
A distraction can pull one enemy away from a group or make a crossing possible without exposing Kay. Use the opening to move to the next piece of cover, not to rush blindly through the entire area. If the distraction does not create enough space, wait for the next patrol cycle instead of forcing the route.
Use Nix on equipment and alarms
When an alarm device or other equipment controls the encounter, command Nix to interact with it if the situation allows. Disabling an alarm before starting a takedown removes a major failure condition. If an alarm-risk enemy is nearby, combine Nix’s action with cover and timing so Kay is not exposed while Nix works.

Ask Nix to fetch items
Nix can retrieve items, which can save Kay from crossing a dangerous patch of ground. Use fetching when the reward is useful and the route to it is more exposed than the route Nix can take. Keep your immediate objective in mind; interacting with every possible item can create unnecessary exposure.

When a compound feels impossible
Search for another entrance
Large compounds can have multiple entrances. If the obvious gate is heavily guarded, walk the perimeter and inspect side paths, openings, elevated approaches, and less-visible access points. An alternate entrance may change the patrol pattern, place Kay closer to the objective, or avoid an alarm device entirely.
Leave and improve syndicate reputation
If every approach remains heavily contested, do not assume you are under-equipped or expected to win a direct assault. Side missions can improve reputation with the relevant syndicate. The beginner guide says that a Good standing can allow Kay to enter some locations that would otherwise require stealth. Reputation therefore functions as an access option, not merely a score.
- Identify which syndicate controls or influences the location.
- Check available side missions connected to that syndicate.
- Complete a mission that improves the relationship, while considering the consequences of reputation choices elsewhere.
- Return to the compound and check whether the access condition has changed.
This approach trades immediate progress for a less hostile return. It also lets you learn the surrounding region before attempting the compound again.
A practical first-session sequence
- Open Settings. Review Gameplay, Cognitive, Color, Vision, and Hearing options. Turn on accessibility features such as larger subtitles or text-to-speech when useful.
- Select Story, Regular, or Hard. Pick the pressure level you can enjoy, knowing the cited beginner guide says it can be changed later.
- Practice stopping safely. In the first stealth sections, pause behind cover and watch patrol movement before crossing.
- Send Nix ahead. Reveal enemy positions, then identify the guard or device that can raise an alarm.
- Create a controlled opening. Distract or otherwise separate a target, move to the next cover position, and avoid crossing multiple sight lines at once.
- Check the perimeter at compounds. Look for another entrance before committing to the most visible route.
- Retreat when the odds are poor. Break line of sight, reposition, and try again rather than turning every failed stealth attempt into an extended firefight.
- Consider reputation. If access remains difficult, pursue a side mission for the relevant syndicate and revisit the location after improving your standing.
- Expand your attention gradually. Once the basic stealth-and-Nix loop feels natural, add gadgets, syndicate missions, speeder travel, and Trailblazer activities to your routine.

Troubleshoot a difficult encounter
You are detected immediately
Return to cover and watch the patrol cycle. Use Nix to reveal positions, then choose a route with fewer overlapping sight lines. If an alarm-risk enemy is responsible, make that target the first priority rather than attacking the nearest guard.
The alarm keeps ending the attempt
Locate the alarm source and determine whether Nix can disable it. Approach from a position that keeps Kay concealed while the interaction occurs. If the device or its guard cannot be reached safely, leave the area and return after improving your route or syndicate standing.
The main entrance is too heavily guarded
Walk the perimeter for another entrance. The game’s larger compounds are designed with multiple access possibilities, so the visible gate is not necessarily the intended route for your current situation.
You are losing every direct fight
Change the problem instead of repeating the same attack. Lower the Gameplay Experience setting if needed, use stealth and distractions, and take advantage of a side mission that can improve access through syndicate reputation. The difficulty setting can be adjusted during play according to the official beginner guide.
Common new-player mistakes to avoid
- Starting every encounter with the blaster: being outnumbered is a signal to observe and use cover.
- Ignoring Nix until a prompt appears: his scouting, distraction, alarm, sabotage, and fetching abilities are useful before a fight begins.
- Fixating on the front gate: compounds may offer alternate entrances.
- Treating reputation as decoration: a Good standing can change whether some locations require stealth.
- Refusing to change difficulty: Story, Regular, and Hard are adjustable during play, so use the setting that keeps the game enjoyable.
- Buying an edition without checking the listing: Season Pass, story-pack, cosmetic, and art-book contents vary by platform and edition.
