Fallen London is a free-to-play, text-based browser adventure from Failbetter Games. To begin, open the game in a browser and explore its available storylets: each presents narrative choices, and choosing one spends actions. The four familiar skills—Watchful, Shadowy, Dangerous, and Persuasive—help determine which challenges you can attempt. You can play the base game without membership.
How the basic action loop works
Fallen London advances through choices in its stories. You spend actions to select an option; depending on the choice, it may test a skill, require an item or quality, or change one of your qualities. Qualities are character attributes that can record progress and help determine what becomes available next.

Read the option text before committing an action. It can tell you whether a choice depends on a particular skill, item, or quality, and what kind of outcome to expect. Challenge options may fail, and failure can still change the story or affect a menace quality. Check the result text and your qualities afterward rather than assuming a failed check has ended your progress.

Storylets and opportunities are different
Storylets are the narrative units presented as available stories or situations. Some appear only when your character meets their quality requirements. The community-maintained Fallen London Wiki distinguishes these from opportunities: storylets remain available while their requirements are met, whereas an opportunity is consumed when played. Simply opening a storylet does not, by itself, use it up. For the requirements and effects of a specific choice, rely on the current in-game interface; community explanations can lag behind game changes.

What the four core skills mean
| Skill | Broad role |
|---|---|
| Watchful | Observation and investigation |
| Shadowy | Stealth and concealment |
| Dangerous | Physical risk |
| Persuasive | Social influence |
These labels are a starting point, not a complete prediction of every outcome. Read the challenge indicator and the choice description instead of assuming options are equally safe or that a particular skill guarantees success. Menaces are qualities associated with danger or trouble; a dated player discussion describes failures leading to menace-specific situations, but its precise strategies and costs should not be treated as current guidance.
A low-stress way to approach your first sessions
- Read before spending. Check each option for challenge indicators and named items or qualities.
- Use qualities as signposts. They can show what you have progressed and why another story has unlocked.
- Follow “Making Your Name” stories when they appear. These early threads provide useful direction without requiring you to follow a fixed route.
- Explore elsewhere when a check looks too difficult. Build the relevant skill through other stories, then return if you still want to try that option.
- Review what changed after a choice. Read the outcome and look for new qualities or menaces, including after a failed challenge.
This is a flexible way to learn the opening game, not a guaranteed route through every story. If you get stuck, start with the official Fallen London Help page or the game’s forums and Discord. The wiki can also help explain terms.

Is membership required?
No. Failbetter describes the base game as free to play. Its publisher page lists membership extras separately: a monthly standalone premium story, a larger opportunity-card hand, double actions, and access to the House of Chimes and Mr Chimes’ Lost and Found. These are optional content and convenience benefits, not prerequisites for learning the action system, skills, or storylets. Membership pricing is not stated on the cited publisher page.
Version and changing details
Failbetter’s credits page displayed version 6.5.115 in 2026. Interface details and membership benefits can change, so check the live game and official pages for current specifics.
