Bullet heaven games—also called survivor-likes, auto-shooters, or wave shooters—usually ask you to survive an arena that fills with increasingly dangerous enemies. Start by learning how your chosen game handles attacks and upgrades, keep moving with a purpose, and shape your build around the options that game actually offers. The details vary: some games attack automatically, others require aiming, and upgrades may come from level-up choices, chests, or a shop.
What is a bullet heaven game?
Epic Games Store contributor Steven T. Wright describes a survivor-like as a game that challenges players to survive intensifying waves of attackers in a closed arena. The labels “survivor-like,” “bullet heaven,” “auto-shooter,” and “wave shooter” overlap in common use, but they are not a guarantee that every game follows the same formula. A typical run involves moving through an arena, collecting experience or other resources, and improving a character’s ability to handle tougher enemies. The amount of aiming, shopping, and wave-based structure differs by game. Epic Games Store’s overview of survivor games discusses these variations; Steam’s curator also uses the phrase “Survivors-genre games, aka Bullet Heaven, Auto Shooters, Auto Battlers” as a collection label, rather than a formal genre standard.

How should you move to survive?
In an automatic-attacking game, movement is still an active part of combat. Use it to avoid contact, influence where enemies gather, and reach experience or useful drops when it is safe. In Vampire Survivors, a beginner guide specifically recommends staying in motion and steering enemies into weapon range. Treat that as advice for that game, not a universal rule: enemy behavior, attack range, and arena design vary between titles. RogueWiki’s beginner guide, updated August 12, 2026, covers the game’s June 2026 patch 1.15.
If the game requires manual aiming, movement and target direction need to work together. For example, Epic contrasts the automatic attacks in Vampire Survivors with manual aiming in 20 Minutes Till Dawn. Brotato fires automatically by default, but also offers an optional manual-aiming mode. Check the control settings before a run so you know whether attacks follow your position, your aim, or both.

How do you make a useful build?
A build is a combination of weapons, passive items, traits, and other upgrades that supports a particular run. The available pieces and the rules for combining them depend on the game, so first learn what each choice does and what it can unlock. Avoid assuming that one damage or defense priority is best across all survivor-likes; the available evidence does not establish a universal stat order.
Plan around the game’s combinations
In Vampire Survivors, weapon evolutions depend on a max-level weapon and its specific passive item. The beginner guide recommends planning for a small number of achievable evolutions rather than chasing every possibility. Use that as a practical planning suggestion for Vampire Survivors, not a proven optimal number or a rule for other games. Confirm the relevant weapon and passive requirements before committing your choices.

Spend with the current run in mind
Some games build your character through level-up selections or chests; others let you shop between waves. Brotato uses a between-wave shop and allows up to six weapons, so consider your character, current weapons, and immediate needs before spending materials. A shop-based game asks you to make a different kind of decision from one where upgrades arrive through level-ups alone.
What should you check before starting a run?
- Attacks and aiming: Find out whether weapons fire automatically, require manual aim, or offer both options.
- Upgrade timing: Check whether choices appear at level-up, in chests, between waves, or through another system.
- Run structure: Learn whether you are surviving a timer or a sequence of discrete waves; do not assume every game uses the same pacing.
- Build limits: Look for weapon-slot limits, character-specific options, passive-item requirements, and evolution rules before following a build recipe.
These checks are more useful than importing a strategy from another game unchanged. A build guide only applies when its character, item pool, and combination rules match the game and version you are playing.

Is Brotato a useful game to try?
Brotato is a clear example of how survivor-likes can change the genre’s usual controls and progression. Nintendo’s listing for the Switch download version describes a top-down arena shooter roguelite with up to six weapons, automatic firing by default, optional manual aiming, materials that provide experience, and a shop between waves. Nintendo says its waves last 20 to 90 seconds and runs take under 30 minutes; those figures describe Brotato on that product listing, not the genre as a whole. The listing also describes options to adjust enemy health, damage, and speed. See Nintendo’s Brotato Switch download software page for the product details.
