Check the exact game and edition
- Identify the version you want to play. Note the title, PS4 or PS5 platform, edition, and—if you have a disc—the region of that copy. Requirements can differ between editions and platforms.
- Open the matching PlayStation Store page. Use the page for the correct platform and region. Review its online-feature labels and product information for explicit connection requirements.
- Read the wording precisely. “Online play required” indicates that online play is required; it does not, by itself, explain every mode or establish that the game needs a connection at all times. “Persistent internet connection required” is explicit language for a continuing connection.
- For a physical PS4 game, check its package too. PlayStation’s Japanese PS4 offline-support page says to check the package or Store to find out whether a game is online-only, and warns that a disc copy can still be online-only: PlayStation Support: What you can do on PS4 without a network environment. This page is specific to PS4 and does not establish a universal rule for PS5 games.
- If the listing is unclear, consult the publisher. Look for official product information or support instructions for the exact edition. Do not infer offline availability from a disc, a single-player label, or a general statement about the console.
Separate a connection requirement from a PS Plus requirement
A game’s need for internet and its need for a PlayStation Plus subscription are different questions. “PS Plus required for online play” means that a subscription is required for the stated online play; it is not another way of saying that the game needs a persistent connection. PlayStation directs players to the Store to check whether Plus is required for online play: PlayStation Plus support.

The US PlayStation Store page for The Elder Scrolls Online illustrates the distinction: it shows both “Online play required” and “PS Plus required for online play,” while its product information separately says “PERSISTENT INTERNET CONNECTION REQUIRED.” These are labels for that game, not requirements that should be assumed for other titles: The Elder Scrolls Online on PlayStation Store.
What the console guidance does—and does not—tell you
PlayStation’s 2013 North American PS4 FAQ said that the console did not require a persistent internet connection for games, so users could play single-player titles offline; it separately said online multiplayer required internet and PlayStation Plus. That historical platform-level guidance is not a guarantee about every PS4 game, and it should not be generalized to PS5 titles: PlayStation.Blog: PS4: The Ultimate FAQ – North America.

For PS5, the quick-start guide says internet is needed to purchase and download digital games and explains disc installation separately. That does not mean every disc game works offline, or that every downloaded game needs internet after installation: PlayStation PS5 Quick Start Guide (English, UK).
Compare games using the same checks
If you are choosing between titles for offline play, compare the same details for each exact version:

- Platform and edition, including the disc region if relevant.
- Whether the listing says online play is required.
- Whether product information explicitly says a persistent internet connection is required.
- Whether the connection requirement applies only to multiplayer or another online mode.
- Whether PS Plus is required for that online mode.
- Whether the mode you want is available offline after installation and any required initial setup, as confirmed by the publisher.
Digital access is not the same as offline play
You need internet to purchase and download a digital game, but that alone does not tell you whether you can play it offline after it is installed. Check the game-specific Store information and publisher guidance for the offline behavior of the edition you plan to use.
