Before your first match: check access and learn the controls
Deadlock is a PC game, and access was still described as invite-only in PC Gamer’s September 29, 2026 update report. That is a dated status, not a guarantee of current availability; check official game channels for the latest access information. The same update report described a refreshed map, practice tools and interface options, plus six heroes introduced for release through a player-voting system. It does not mean all six were available simultaneously. PC Gamer’s September 29, 2026 report

Before queueing, use the in-game sandbox or practice tools to move, fire, test a hero’s abilities and look at purchases. A short practice session makes the first match easier to read: you can focus on lane positioning and the map instead of discovering every control under pressure. Deadlock.io’s getting-started reference also recommends trying abilities and purchases in the sandbox. It is an unofficial community reference, not an official Valve guide. There is no stable, verified best beginner hero in the references here. Hero availability and balance can shift, especially as the roster changes. Pick a hero whose basic actions make sense to you, then play that hero for several matches before expanding your pool. Repetition lets you learn movement, lane economy and map decisions without relearning a kit every game. Check the current client for the roster and abilities rather than copying names from an older beginner list.
#1 Best Overall
- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
Use these questions to compare candidates; they are decision aids, not a ranking:
- Can you explain the basic game plan? Prefer a kit whose main actions you can describe in plain terms.
- What can you contribute in a fight? Notice whether the hero helps by dealing damage, controlling space, supporting teammates or creating an opening.
- Can you stay alive while learning? A hero is a poor practice choice if using the kit reliably leaves you exposed before you have learned the map.
- Can you secure lane value? Choose someone with whom you can focus on collecting souls and maintaining a safe position.
New players often find it overwhelming to learn what every hero does and which kits counter others. You do not need to solve the whole matchup chart before playing: learn your own hero’s core actions first, then note one opponent ability or interaction that changed a fight. A recent player question illustrates that concern, but it is one example rather than a survey. A recent Deadlock player question on Reddit
In lane, collect value without turning every encounter into a duel
Your early lane goal is to collect souls while preserving the health and position needed to keep doing so. Stay close enough to gather value, but do not chase an elimination if it costs a wave or puts you in reach of a dangerous counterattack. A kill is not automatically worth losing the opportunity to farm safely.

Lane assignments and balance-sensitive details can change. Use the assignments and current mechanics shown in the live client, not a fixed lane plan copied from an older guide. Spend souls to solve the problem you have now
Return to spend when doing so is reasonably safe, then ask what is limiting you. If staying alive is the problem, favor survivability; if reaching fights or leaving danger is difficult, consider mobility; if you can stay safe but lack reliable damage, strengthen the damage you can consistently apply. These are purchase categories, not a universal build. Item effects and values may change, so check the in-client descriptions before buying. Make every rotation answer a map question
Check the minimap between waves and decide what a move is meant to accomplish. A rotation without a purpose can leave you late to a fight or away from safe farm. Useful reasons to leave lane include:

- Protect an ally who is under pressure.
- Help defend a structure.
- Join a team objective when your presence can help secure it.
- Collect safe farm elsewhere when your lane offers little value.
- Reset for a purchase when continuing without spending would leave you at a disadvantage.
Before moving, consider whether the trip is reachable and whether your team can make use of your presence. If the purpose disappears—for example, the ally is safe or the objective opportunity closes—turn back, farm safely or reset rather than continuing out of habit.
After a favorable fight, choose a reward the team can actually claim
A won fight creates an opening, not an automatic objective. Deadlock’s named map objectives include Guardians, Walkers, Base Guardians, Shrines and the Patron; the community objectives reference also describes distinct rewards from Walkers, the Rejuvenator and the Urn. Their rules and values can change, so use current in-client information instead of memorizing fixed numbers. Deadlock.io: Map objectives
Choose the next action by weighing what the team needs against what it can safely finish. A structure and a neutral objective offer different rewards and risks. Check these factors before committing:

- Reward: Which available objective or structure best serves the team’s current need?
- Time: How long are opponents likely to be absent, and can your team finish before they return?
- Lane waves: Is the nearby lane position favorable, or will the team give up more elsewhere than it gains?
- Team condition: Do you have enough health and control to complete the action?
- Exit: Can the group leave safely if enemy players arrive?
Assign someone to watch for approaching enemies. If the opening closes or the team cannot finish safely, disengage; preserving players and returning to the map is better than turning a won fight into a second loss.
After the match, review one decision—not everything
Pick one decision that helped and one you would change next time. For example, you might note that checking the minimap let you defend an ally, while a chase cost a wave. Make the next match’s focus specific: spend more safely, check the map between waves or leave a fight when its purpose is gone. This kind of focused review is more manageable than trying to master every mechanic at once. Deadlock Atlas: Deadlock Beginner Guide
