How to Get Started in Old School RuneScape: Accounts, Membership, and Beginner Goals

Start OSRS free, choose a standard account unless you want Ironman restrictions, and use quests, skills, and exploration to find your own first goals.

You can start Old School RuneScape (OSRS) for free, and you do not need a prescribed quest route or a membership subscription to begin. Create a standard account if you want ordinary trading and the fewest restrictions, use an official client or app, and spend your first sessions learning the controls before choosing goals that interest you.

How do I start playing OSRS?

  1. Download or open the game through an official route. Jagex lists the Jagex Launcher for Windows, Mac, and Linux, as well as Steam, the Apple App Store, and Google Play. See the official OSRS download page for available options. Avoid search ads and lookalike download pages.
  2. Create an account and choose a mode. For a first character, the standard mode is the straightforward choice if you want access to ordinary player trading and the Grand Exchange. The mode decision happens on Tutorial Island, so take a moment to read the options before confirming.
  3. Work through the tutorial and learn the interface. Get comfortable moving, interacting with objects and characters, and opening the game’s panels. You can explore at your own pace; there is no required progression route.

Jagex describes OSRS as a sandbox focused on adventure and self-directed play. That means a quest, a skill, or exploring a new area can all be reasonable next steps rather than stages in a single mandatory plan.

Which account mode should a beginner choose?

Choose based on how much restriction you want, especially around trading. Jagex’s New Player Guide: Settings & Set-Up describes the standard account as the unrestricted option and explains the broad differences between restricted modes.

Mode What it means for a new player
Standard Ordinary trading and Grand Exchange access; the simplest default if you want flexibility.
Ironman A deliberate self-sufficiency challenge with trading and Grand Exchange access restricted.
Group modes Restricted accounts designed for cooperative play with a group.

Ironman is not an upgrade or a requirement for a “proper” first playthrough. Pick it only if its restrictions are part of the challenge you want. Jagex’s guide explicitly says Hardcore Group Ironman is not recommended for new players.

Can I play OSRS for free, and when should I subscribe?

Yes. The official OSRS site offers a “Try Free” route alongside membership: Old School RuneScape. Free play is a sensible way to find out whether the game’s pace and style appeal to you before paying.

Membership expands the game with more quests, member-only skills and regions, member worlds, and additional bank capacity. Whether that is worth paying for depends on which of those additions you want to access, your billing choice, and the current price in your region. Check Jagex’s membership page for live prices and terms; they can vary by billing option and change over time.

You do not need to subscribe just to make progress or decide what you enjoy. Consider membership when the specific extra content you want is worth the cost to you.

What about Old School Bonds?

Old School Bonds are in-game items that can be traded directly to other players or through the Grand Exchange and redeemed for OSRS membership. Jagex says they are tradable only within Old School RuneScape; they cannot be transferred to RuneScape for RuneCoins or Keys. A Bond is an in-game route to membership, not a physical product. See Jagex’s Old School Membership Bonds page for the details.

What should I do in my first sessions?

Start with a few small experiments, then follow whichever one feels rewarding. OSRS is designed to let you carve out your own path, so treat these as options rather than a ranked checklist.

  • Browse quests. Open the quest tab and look at the recommended filter or active quests. Check requirements before choosing one; a quest can give you a clear objective without committing you to a full walkthrough.
  • Sample skills. Open the skill panel to find each skill’s guide and see what its levels unlock. Try activities that sound appealing rather than feeling obliged to train every skill.
  • Explore the map. Pick a nearby place you have not visited and see what is there. Exploration can reveal characters, activities, and future goals.
  • Set one short-term goal. For example, finish a quest, improve a skill, or reach a new location. A small goal helps orient a session without turning the game into a rigid checklist.

If you get stuck, use the in-game Wiki button to look up an unfamiliar object, quest character, or activity. Jagex’s guide also points to the Activity Adviser and the world map as built-in ways to find direction.

Which settings make the game easier to use?

Jagex’s guide, published 12 August 2025, suggests several settings worth considering. Labels and behavior can change, so check the current settings menu rather than assuming every option appears exactly as described there.

  • Shift-click dropping: can make dropping items more convenient when managing your inventory.
  • Hide roofs: can improve visibility inside buildings.
  • Scroll-wheel camera zoom: offers a quick way to adjust your view.
  • View distance in the Official Client: adjust it if you want to see more of your surroundings.
  • Player-attack options: review these carefully, especially if you enter the Wilderness, where accidental attacks can matter.

Jagex emphasizes the mouse as an important control for desktop play, so a basic computer mouse may be a convenient accessory if you are playing on a computer. It is optional, mobile play is supported, and the guide does not establish a particular mouse model as best.
