The right UPI payment gateway is the one that fits your customers’ checkout habits, your integration capacity, and the written terms for your business—not necessarily the one advertising the lowest fee or highest success rate. Compare onboarding eligibility, all-in charges, UPI payment flows, settlement terms, reconciliation and refunds, and support. Then test the leading option with your own customers before making it your primary route.
Start with the payment arrangement, not the brand
UPI merchant acceptance is enabled through an acquiring bank. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) says merchant onboarding includes due diligence and risk assessment, and the acquiring bank assigns a merchant category code (MCC) based on the business category. Before signing up, establish which legal entity will provide each service, who handles funds, and who is responsible for settlement and payment issues. See NPCI’s UPI merchant FAQ and the RBI Master Direction on Regulation of Payment Aggregators.

“Payment gateway” and “payment aggregator” are not interchangeable legal descriptions. RBI’s framework applies to entities undertaking payment aggregation, while its material distinguishes gateways that supply technology infrastructure without handling funds. Check the contracted entity’s role and relevant authorization details for the specific arrangement, rather than relying on a product label.
Match the UPI flow to your checkout
NPCI lists QR, intent, application-based, and collect as online UPI integration modes. Choose based on where and how customers pay; a flow that works well in a mobile app may be awkward on a desktop checkout.
#1 Best Overall
- With Square Terminal, you can ring up sales, accept payments, and print receipts, all with one device. Use it at the counter or ring up customers anywhere in your store.
- Accept all major credit and debit cards and pay one low rate with no hidden fees and no long-term contracts.
- Process chip cards in just two seconds.
- Get your money as soon as the next business day.
- Use it cordlessly with the built-in battery, designed to last all day.
| Flow | Where it may fit | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Intent or app-based | Mobile web or app checkout where a customer can move to a UPI app to authorize payment. | Which apps and devices are supported, what happens when the customer returns to checkout, and how the order receives a final payment status. |
| QR | Desktop checkout, where a customer can scan from a phone; dynamic QR may also suit some app or web flows. | Whether the QR is generated for each order, how long it remains valid, and how the system matches payment to the order. |
| Collect | Flows where a payment request is sent for the customer to approve in a UPI app. | Availability for your intended use, customer steps, expiry behavior, and the provider’s current operational rules. |
| Payment links | Orders initiated outside a conventional website checkout, if the provider supports UPI links for your use case. | Whether links support the required order details, expiry, payment confirmation, and reporting. |
| Recurring mandate | Eligible recurring payments where customers authorize a mandate rather than manually paying each time. | Support for your business category and use case, mandate setup and cancellation flows, and applicable rules. |
These are customer-journey distinctions, not guarantees that every provider supports every mode for every merchant. For example, Cashfree’s UPI page lists intent, dynamic QR, WhatsApp UPI links, collect, and AutoPay; confirm availability and terms for your own account.
Compare the full cost, not one advertised rate
Request a written fee schedule that applies to your legal entity, business category, transaction volume, payment instruments, and integration. Include the transaction fee for UPI and other methods you plan to accept, GST, setup or maintenance charges, add-on services, and any charge for faster settlement. Confirm whether an advertised promotion applies to you, how long it lasts, and what the price becomes afterward.

Provider pages show why a headline figure is not a market-wide comparison. These are provider-stated examples surfaced in 2026, not independent quotes or a ranking; terms and prices may change:
| Provider | Published example | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Cashfree Payments | 1.95% per UPI transaction | Provider-listed on its UPI page; verify applicable terms and any changes. |
| Razorpay | 2% standard platform fee, plus applicable GST | Provider-listed on its UPI page; verify current pricing, covered instruments, and eligibility. |
| PayU | UPI pricing varies by merchant type and volume | Its pricing page also lists no setup, onboarding, or annual fee; request the quote for your profile. |
| PhonePe Payment Gateway | Standard plan advertised as free during an offer period, with zero setup and annual maintenance fees | The pricing page says its displayed figures are accurate as of July 2026. Confirm offer duration, eligibility, and post-offer pricing. |
Check the linked Cashfree UPI page, Razorpay UPI page, PayU pricing page, and PhonePe pricing page for their current published terms. Do not assume a listed rate applies to every payment method, category, or merchant.

Get the settlement terms in writing
A successful customer payment and the date money reaches your business account are separate parts of the arrangement. NPCI says the merchant receives funds according to its agreement. Provider examples surfaced in 2026 include Cashfree’s stated default T+2 cycle and PayU’s stated standard T+2 settlement; both describe faster options subject to terms or merchant profile. These are provider descriptions, not a universal settlement guarantee. See the NPCI FAQ, Cashfree UPI page, and PayU pricing page.
Before onboarding, ask the provider to specify the applicable settlement timetable, the meaning of T+2, treatment of weekends and holidays, any accelerated-settlement fee and approval requirement, and the circumstances in which funds can be held or reserved. Confirm that the answer is part of your agreement or other binding terms, not only a sales estimate.

Check integration, records, refunds, and support
Choose an integration your team can implement and operate reliably. PayU’s integration guide identifies factors such as accepted payment types and currencies, security and fraud controls, customer features, split payments, and implementation resources. For your own stack, check:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Whether there is a maintained plugin or SDK for your website platform or app framework, and whether server-side APIs are available if you need custom behavior.
- How payment status is delivered, including webhook behavior, retries, and ways to verify the final status before fulfilling an order.
- Whether refunds can be initiated and tracked in the dashboard or API, and how refund status and timing appear to customers and staff.
- Whether transaction exports and reports make it possible to reconcile orders, fees, refunds, and settlements against your own records.
- What support channels are available, how urgent payment or settlement issues are escalated, and whether that support arrangement is included in your contract.
Ask to see a sample reconciliation export and walk through a failed payment, a duplicate notification, a refund, and a settlement mismatch before committing. A checkout that collects money but leaves the team unable to identify or resolve exceptions can create more operational work than the headline integration suggests.
Evaluate performance with comparable evidence
A gateway’s “success rate” claim is useful only if you know what was counted and whether the comparison matches your business. The provider pages described here do not establish a neutral, like-for-like public benchmark of UPI success rates, support response times, or onboarding outcomes. Ask for performance data relevant to your merchant category, issuer-bank mix, device and checkout flow, date range, and definition of a successful payment.
Where practical, pilot the integration and monitor your own results. Track payment completion and failure reasons alongside refund handling, reconciliation effort, settlement punctuality, and how quickly support resolves real issues. Compare the same measures across providers and comparable periods; otherwise, differences in customer devices, banks, traffic, or payment flow can make a simple percentage misleading. Check the NPCI UPI circular index for current operational circulars relevant to your intended flow and category, since rules can change.
Quick Recap
Use this checklist before signup

- Identify the contracted provider and acquiring arrangement, and clarify who handles funds, settlement, and payment support.
- Obtain a written, instrument-by-instrument fee schedule, including GST, recurring charges, add-ons, and promotion end terms.
- Choose the specific UPI flow for each checkout surface—mobile, app, desktop, links, or recurring use—and test it on the devices your customers use.
- Get the settlement timetable, acceleration terms, weekend treatment, and hold or reserve conditions in writing.
- Review plugins or SDKs, webhook and payment-status handling, refunds, reports, reconciliation exports, and support escalation.
- Run a pilot and compare your own completion, failure, refund, settlement, and support outcomes before making a provider your primary option.
