How to Get Started in a Cozy Strategy Game Without Feeling Overwhelmed

Start with the tutorial, learn the next useful action, and make your first session about one small goal—not mastering every system.

You do not need to learn every system before you begin. Start the tutorial, work out the immediate objective and the few controls needed to act, and give yourself permission to play on an easier setting if the game offers one. Treat your first session as a chance to learn one small loop—not a test of whether you can master the whole game.

What should you learn first?

Concentrate on what lets you take the next useful action: the current objective, the basic way to gather or manage a resource, and how to pause or revisit instructions. Save advanced builds, optimization, and unfamiliar interface details for when the game gives you a reason to use them.

A beginner’s question might sound like: “I’d like to learn this game but it feels so massive, what are the basics I shuold concentrate in first?” The practical answer is to follow the tutorial one objective at a time and learn the action chain immediately in front of you.

A low-pressure first-session plan

  1. Open the built-in tutorial

Follow its first instructions rather than trying to understand every screen. Identify the overall win condition, the immediate task, and how to pause or review guidance. The official Against the Storm tutorial walkthrough is an example of a guide that explains what the tutorial asks players to do and why. Its walkthrough dates to version 1.0, while the cited source notes the game has since reached version 1.11.2, so details may have changed.

    Asmodee Cozy Stickerville Board Game
    • BUILD YOUR DREAM VILLAGE: Use stickers to create houses, farms, shops, and more as your town grows into something truly unique.
    • IMMERSIVE STORY EXPERIENCE: Follow your residents’ personal stories, uncover mysteries, and explore activities like fishing, mining, and even finding love.
    • CHOICES THAT MATTER: You can’t lose, but every decision shapes future years—buildings have unique effects that open new gameplay possibilities.
    • PERFECT FOR FAMILIES & FANS OF COZY GAMES: Easy to learn, quick to play, and ideal for families, hobby gamers, and fans of Animal Crossing, Stardew Valley, and The Sims.
    • QUALITY COMPONENTS INCLUDED: Comes with a Story Book, Sticker Book, 120 Event Cards, 60 Catalogue Cards, tokens, and more for endless replayability.
  2. Lower the pressure if the game allows it

Check the game’s own difficulty or scenario descriptions before starting. Easier settings can give you time to learn, but their effects differ by game. For example, the Against the Storm official wiki’s difficulty table describes Settler as having a 12-point victory target and 35% lower villager food consumption than higher settings; these are game mechanics, and the guide’s version information should be checked against the current game. A Stellaris community beginner guide offers a different example: a practice galaxy with AI empires and other threats removed. That is not a universal setup to copy into another strategy game.

  3. Pick one small goal

Complete one tutorial objective or learn one basic action chain, such as gathering a resource and putting it to use. Resist the urge to optimize your entire settlement or understand every system at once.

    • QUICK AND REPLAYABLE – Each session plays in 15–20 minutes per player, offering easy-to-learn yet rich gameplay that rewards planning and creativity, making it ideal for families and hobby gamers.
  4. Stop and review one thing

After the session, name one thing that worked and one question you want answered next time. If the tutorial did not stick, replaying it may be a useful reset when the game supports that option. The Against the Storm publisher FAQ says its tutorial can be replayed from the World Map.

How to use guides without making the game feel bigger

Look up the question that is blocking your next action instead of reading a full advanced strategy guide from beginning to end. The Against the Storm tutorial walkthrough is explicitly focused on clarifying the tutorial, not optimizing strategy, and directs readers onward once they understand the basics. A community Stellaris beginner guide likewise recommends proceeding step by step alongside the in-game tutorial. Treat community advice as guidance rather than official documentation, and check that any guide matches your game’s current version.

  • COMPLETE GAME SET INCLUDED: Includes foldable player boards, dice, and drawing components that let players collect and arrange items like constellations, musical notes, and photos across multiple sceneries.
  • EASY TO LEARN, SOOTHING TO PLAY: Roll dice simultaneously, add their values, and choose where to place them. Each correct line adds items to your shelf, while repeated numbers break your streak!
  • MULTIPLE SCENERIES & DIFFICULTY LEVELS: Fold and unfold your board to explore 8 unique combinations—each with new rules and challenges that keep gameplay fresh and endlessly replayable.
  • FOR FAMILIES, FRIENDS & CASUAL GAMERS: Designed for 1–5 players, ages 8 and up. Perfect for family nights, solo sessions, or relaxing game afternoons filled with creativity and calm strategy.

What if the game still feels overwhelming?

  • Return to the immediate objective and ignore systems that are not needed for it yet.
  • Use a lower difficulty or simpler scenario only if the game’s own options explain one that suits your needs.
  • Pause to reread instructions, or replay the tutorial if the game allows it.
  • Remember that a first run need not be a performance test. The Against the Storm publisher describes the game as complex and says proficiency can take a few games; that is a game-specific expectation, not a rule for every strategy title.

Choosing a gentle starting point within a game

If the game offers several starts, compare them by how much pressure is active at the beginning, whether you can reduce difficulty, whether the tutorial is replayable, and whether you receive a clear immediate objective. These are useful questions to ask, not a ranking of games: the title of this article does not specify one particular game, and the examples above do not establish that every cozy strategy game has the same options.
