The fastest way to close split screen on a Samsung Galaxy tablet is to tap Recents in the navigation bar, then tap X. If you don’t see an X, drag the center divider to the top or bottom edge of the screen, or tap Home. Menu labels can differ by model, carrier and software version.
Three ways to exit split screen
Each method ends the split view in a slightly different way. Pick the one that matches what you want to happen next.

Method 1: Close it from Recents
- Tap Recents in the navigation bar.
- Tap X to close the split-screen view.

Method 2: Drag the divider away
- Touch and hold the separator bar between the two apps.
- Drag it all the way to the top or bottom of the screen.
The app on the side you dragged toward closes, and the other app fills the screen. Samsung describes this in its troubleshooting guidance for apps stuck in split screen or windows.

Method 3: Tap Home
Tapping Home closes split screen on the Home screen. The two apps stay grouped in Recents, according to Samsung’s Multi window and App pairs support page. That’s handy if you want to return to the same pair later. If you don’t, use Method 1 to close them.
Stop split screen from opening by itself
Closing the current split doesn’t stop it from coming back. If a swipe keeps triggering it, turn off the gesture:

- Open Settings.
- Go to Advanced features > Multi window.
- Turn off Swipe for split screen.
Samsung’s troubleshooting page also names Swipe for pop-up view as a gesture you can disable if unwanted floating windows keep appearing. Turning off these swipes doesn’t remove split screen. You can still start it manually, for example from Recents or the Edge panel.

- No X in Recents: use the divider drag or Home instead.
- Menu names differ: Samsung says screens and settings can vary by wireless carrier and software version. Check your model’s page on Samsung Support, or search Settings for “Multi window”.
- An app won’t split: Samsung Support states, “Not all apps support split screen view,” so some apps can’t be used this way.
One note on sources: Samsung’s troubleshooting page is titled for phones, but its Multi window instructions apply to Galaxy devices generally. The Settings path may therefore look slightly different on your tablet.
