The best Cursor alternative depends on how you want AI involved in your work. If you want to keep your current editor, look at editor-based assistants such as GitHub Copilot. If you want an agent that can plan, edit and run commands across a whole project, look at agent modes and terminal agents. If you want a working app generated from a prompt, you need a prompt-to-app builder, which is a different product category. This guide doesn’t pad the list to twelve names. It gives you a way to sort the field, plus the documented details that can be verified for the tools it covers.
The three kinds of Cursor alternative
Cursor is an AI-centred code editor, so people often compare it with products that work in a completely different way. Mixing those up is the most common mistake in “best alternatives” lists. The alternatives fall into three workflow categories.

1. Assistants inside the editor you already use
These add chat, completion and edit features to an established editor. You keep your extensions, keybindings and habits. GitHub Copilot is the documented example: GitHub describes it as available in VS Code and, through extensions, in several other IDEs. Its product page describes plan, edit and build workflows and an agent that can work across multiple files.

Here the AI does more than suggest a snippet. GitHub’s documentation says Copilot’s agent mode can choose which files to touch, edit across a project, and run commands as needed. You can review the changes, and command approvals depend on your settings and environment. Terminal-based agents belong in this category too. They run alongside your editor rather than inside it, which suits developers who live in the command line.

3. Prompt-to-app builders
These hosted services generate a runnable application from a description. They suit prototypes, internal tools and non-developers. They are not substitutes for a code editor, because you are steering an outcome rather than working in your own codebase. Judge them by how easily you can export, own and maintain the generated code, not by autocomplete quality.
Four questions that pick the category
| Question | If yes | Category to explore |
|---|---|---|
| Do I want to stay in my current editor or IDE? | Pick something that plugs into it | Editor-based assistant |
| Do I need coordinated edits across many files, plus running commands? | Look for an agent mode or terminal agent | Project-level agent |
| Do I prefer working from the terminal? | An agent that runs outside the editor fits | Terminal agent |
| Do I want a working app from a prompt rather than help with my own code? | You are shopping for a different product type | Prompt-to-app builder |
Keeping a general-purpose editor: VS Code with several agents
You don’t have to switch editors to get agent-style help. VS Code’s documentation lists several agent harnesses, including Copilot, Claude Code and Codex. It also describes choices about which model provider to use and where requests run. For a web developer, this is the lowest-friction way to try more than one approach without leaving a familiar environment. Provider terms and capabilities change, so check the current VS Code documentation before relying on a specific combination.

GitHub Copilot as the cross-IDE option
If your team uses a mix of editors, such as VS Code for front-end work and another IDE for a back-end service, Copilot’s multi-IDE availability is its clearest documented advantage. The catch is that parity is not guaranteed. GitHub publishes a feature matrix showing which features work in which IDE, and it marks some as preview. The matrix itself is labelled a public preview, so check it for your exact editor before you commit. Don’t assume the VS Code feature set carries over.
Recommended Free Tools
What to evaluate in a trial:
- Whether agent mode is available in your editor.
- How it handles command approvals, and whether you are comfortable with the defaults.
- How easy it is to review and undo multi-file edits.
- Which models you can choose, and where your requests are processed.
How to run a fair trial for web projects
- Pick one real task, such as adding a form with validation to an existing component, or migrating a page to a new routing pattern.
- Run the same task in each candidate with the same starting commit.
- Count how many files each tool touched, whether it ran your build or test command, and how many corrections you had to make.
- Review the diff as you would a colleague’s pull request, and run your test suite.
- Repeat on a second, messier task, such as a bug in unfamiliar code. Agents often look best on greenfield work.

The Bottom Line
Decide the workflow first and the product second. Stay in your editor with an assistant like Copilot, add an agent harness in VS Code if you want project-wide changes, or use a prompt-to-app builder only when you want a generated app rather than help with your own code. Then test two candidates on the same real task before paying for either.
