Choose how you want to receive new posts
Substack offers email, push, and combined delivery options. Choose based on where you want the alert to appear and whether you want a copy in your inbox as well as a phone notification.

Labels may vary slightly between the app and desktop. Substack’s iOS help, updated September 10, 2026, explains that smart notifications primarily use push and may email posts you missed if you have not opened the app for a while. Subscribe to the publication
Find the publication and subscribe using the Substack account you want to use for notifications. A free subscription is enough for posts designated for free subscribers. Posts restricted to paid subscribers require the appropriate paid access. Subscribed publications’ new posts also appear in the app Inbox. (Substack Support, Android subscription guide.)

Set up email or app push
On the Substack mobile app
- Open your profile menu.
- Tap Settings, then Notifications.
- Open Newsletter Delivery.
- Select Prefer email, Prefer push, or the option for both, according to where you want new posts delivered.
On desktop
- Open your Substack account settings.
- Find Newsletter delivery.
- Choose email, push, or both, where available.
Allow push notifications on your phone
Choosing push in Substack is not enough if your phone blocks notifications. On Android, Substack’s notification controls include a New posts category for writers you subscribe to. In the app, go to Settings → Notifications → Push Notifications settings, then open the device’s Notification categories and check that New posts is allowed. Also make sure device-level notification permission is enabled for Substack. Android labels can differ by device. (Substack Support, Android notification guidance.)
Check publication sections
If a publication adds sections after you subscribe, you may need to opt in to those sections separately. Go to account Settings → Subscriptions, select the publication, and turn on the sections you want. Substack says section settings control whether you receive that section by email and in the app Inbox. (Substack Support, section subscription guidance.)

Troubleshoot missing email or push alerts
- Verify your subscription and address. Confirm that you are still subscribed and that the email address on the account is correct.
- Check delivery preference. If Prefer push is selected, posts may be delivered by phone push rather than email. Switch to email or both if you want them in your inbox.
- Look in spam and Promotions. In Gmail, check Promotions as well as spam. Mark the message “not spam” or move it to Primary if you want future messages there.
- Use the publication’s email test. Visit
publicationname.substack.com/account/email-testfor that publication, sign in, and select Send test email. If email is disabled because you unsubscribed, subscribe again. - Check for an email-block notice. Follow Substack’s instructions in the notice. Corporate or government mail filters may require help from your organization’s IT team.
- For push, check both settings layers. Confirm the Substack delivery choice and your phone’s notification permission; on Android, also check the New posts notification category.

A publication post or newsletter is not the same as a Note. Substack says Notes do not trigger email in the way newsletters do. The web activity bell can notify readers and followers about Notes; app push may be sent for a first Note and for unseen Notes, but not for every Note. If you want Note alerts, review the New notes notification setting and do not expect every Note to produce an email or push notification.
