How to Get More Volume From Your iPhone Speaker

Check playback volume and built-in speaker limits first. If your iPhone is already at its available maximum, send audio to a Bluetooth speaker for louder room playback.

You can make sure your iPhone’s built-in speaker is not being held below its available maximum by a volume setting. But settings cannot raise the speaker’s designed hardware ceiling. If the phone is already at its maximum and you need louder room playback, route audio to a Bluetooth speaker instead.

Turn up the audio that is playing

  1. Start playing the audio you want to hear, then press the iPhone’s side volume-up button.

  2. Alternatively, open Control Center and drag the volume slider upward.

The side buttons adjust playback volume while audio is playing. When nothing is playing, they may affect alert volume instead.

Check the built-in speaker limits

  1. Open Settings > Sounds & Haptics.

  2. Under Built-In Speaker, review Volume Limit and Reduce Loud Sounds. A set limit can cap the speaker’s maximum, while Reduce Loud Sounds softens loud speaker sounds. Turn down or disable a restriction if it is preventing the level you want.

Labels and menu availability can vary by iOS version or region. If Screen Time limits are managed by a family organizer, you may not be able to change the volume limit yourself. Apple’s guide to these controls is Adjust the volume on iPhone.

If only Apple Music sounds quiet

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Music.

  2. Review Sound Check and EQ.

Sound Check evens out perceived loudness between songs. Apple explains: “Sound Check adjusts the loudness between different songs to play them at the same volume.” Turning it off may make some tracks seem louder, but it can also restore differences between recordings; it does not guarantee every song will get louder. Apple also notes that stereo and Dolby Atmos versions of a track can have different perceived loudness. See If music in Apple Music sounds quiet.

Music EQ changes the tonal balance of audio in the Music app. It is not a system-wide volume control or a reliable way to push every sound beyond the iPhone speaker’s normal maximum.

Use a Bluetooth speaker for louder room playback

  1. Put the Bluetooth speaker in pairing or discovery mode.

Apple says the accessory should be within about 10 meters for pairing. If it moves out of range, playback may return to the iPhone. The sound comes from the external speaker; pairing does not make the built-in iPhone speaker louder. Apple’s instructions are in Play audio from your iPhone on a Bluetooth accessory.

When choosing an external speaker, check that it supports a connection method you want to use, is practical to carry or place where you listen, and has volume controls you can reach. Keep in mind that the speaker’s own volume setting may also need adjustment.

What settings can—and cannot—change

Apple’s guidance does not establish a universal maximum decibel level for iPhone speakers or a software method for exceeding their designed output. A specific dB figure or guaranteed gain from an app, EQ preset, cup, or phone orientation would therefore be misleading.
