To get free tax help from the IRS, search the IRS VITA/TCE locator or call 800-906-9887. VITA and TCE partner sites prepare eligible basic returns with trained volunteers, but each location sets its own hours and may limit the returns it accepts. Check the site’s eligibility rules, services, appointment requirements, and document checklist before you go.
Which free tax-help option fits your situation?
| Option | Best fit | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| VITA | Low-to-moderate-income taxpayers, people with disabilities, and people with limited English proficiency | Free preparation of basic tax returns at participating local sites |
| TCE | Especially taxpayers age 60 or older with pension or retirement-related questions | Free basic return preparation and tax counseling |
| IRS Free File | People who prefer to prepare and file their own return online | Guided tax software or fillable federal forms, subject to program and partner requirements |
| Low Income Taxpayer Clinic (LITC) | Eligible taxpayers with an IRS dispute, such as an audit or collection case | Help resolving disputes; not routine annual return preparation |
VITA and TCE are delivered through local partner sites, not a guarantee that every IRS location handles every return. Volunteers must pass tax-law training that meets or exceeds IRS standards, and each prepared return receives a quality review before filing. The site’s available services depend on the volunteers and expertise it has that season. IRS Publication 3676-B describes services and documents to bring.

Do you qualify for VITA or TCE?
VITA income guidance is not a universal IRS cap
The IRS says it does not set one program-wide VITA income ceiling. Many sites generally serve taxpayers with income of about $70,244 or less, but individual locations may choose their own limits. Treat that figure as guidance, not a guarantee of eligibility, and ask the specific site about its current rules. VITA also commonly serves people with disabilities and taxpayers with limited English proficiency. See the IRS VITA eligibility guidance.
TCE is especially for older taxpayers
TCE particularly serves people age 60 and older, with experience in pension and retirement-related tax questions. Age alone does not establish that a specific site can prepare a particular return, so confirm the site’s scope and appointment availability.

Ask about complex returns before booking
Tell the site about circumstances such as business income, rental property, or other complex tax situations and ask whether its volunteers can handle them. Services vary by location and volunteer expertise; do not assume that a site can prepare every type of return.
How do you find a nearby free tax-preparation site?
- Search the IRS locator: Use the VITA/TCE site locator or call 800-906-9887. IRS Topic 101 also points to Publication 5136 and the IRS app as ways to locate help.
- For TCE, check Tax-Aide too: Most TCE sites are operated by AARP Foundation Tax-Aide. Search its site locator or call 888-227-7669.
- Confirm dates and appointments: Ask whether the location is open for the filing season, whether you need an appointment, and whether walk-ins are accepted. The IRS says its locator is updated regularly from February through April; do not rely on it alone for off-season hours.
- Check services and documents: Review Publication 3676-B and the IRS what-to-bring checklist, then call the location to verify it accepts your return situation.
- Protect your information: Use an official IRS or partner locator to find the site, and follow the location’s process for sharing tax documents and identity information.
What should you bring to a free tax-preparation appointment?
Use the IRS checklist and the site’s own instructions as the final authority, since required records can depend on your return. Before you travel, confirm which documents to bring and how the site handles tax information. Bring the information needed to identify yourself and prepare the return, including relevant income and tax records; if anything is missing or unusual, ask the site whether it can still help.

Can you file for free yourself instead?
IRS Free File is a no-cost option for eligible taxpayers who are comfortable preparing their own returns. For filing season 2026, the IRS said taxpayers with 2025 adjusted gross income of $89,000 or less could use Free File Guided Tax at no cost. That threshold applies to that filing season, not later years. The IRS listed eight trusted partners for the 2026 season, and partner rules could also depend on age, state residency, or military status. Free File Fillable Forms were available for people comfortable completing their own federal return. Check the current IRS Free File page for the applicable season and eligibility terms.
Some VITA/TCE sites offer Facilitated Self-Assistance: web-based software for basic federal and state returns, with an IRS-certified volunteer guiding the taxpayer rather than preparing the return. This is available only at select listed sites; ask the location whether it offers the option.

Where should you go for an IRS dispute?
If you need help with an audit, appeal, collection matter, or another IRS dispute, look for a Low Income Taxpayer Clinic, not a routine VITA/TCE appointment. LITCs are independent of the IRS and the Taxpayer Advocate Service. They help eligible taxpayers and may offer services free or for a small fee; availability and eligibility depend on the clinic.

For the 2026 filing season, the IRS said most complete and accurate electronically filed returns with direct deposit were issued within 21 days, while some took longer. That is general timing guidance, not a refund guarantee. Check the IRS’s current refund information for your return’s status.
