Their selections are mainly public-domain books, not a complete catalog of new commercial releases. Check the rights for a specific title, especially if you live outside the United States.
Where to find free audiobooks without a library card
LibriVox: free recordings read by people
LibriVox is a volunteer project that records books already in the public domain and makes the recordings available at no charge. It describes its work as non-commercial and ad-free. You can browse by author, title, genre or subject, and language; listen on a computer or compatible mobile device, or burn a recording to CD if you have the equipment.

Because volunteers narrate the books, voices and recording styles vary, and the catalog depends on what volunteers have recorded. LibriVox also notes that older books can contain dated language or views. Its aim, in its own words, is “To make all books in the public domain available, narrated by real people and distributed for free, in audio format on the internet.”
Project Gutenberg: human-read and synthesized audio
Project Gutenberg is best known for free ebooks, but its site also links to audiobook collections. When accessed in 2026, it listed 662 titles read by people and an Open Audiobook Collection with almost 5,000 computer-generated titles. These counts can change, so check the current catalog.
#1 Best Overall
Pay attention to how a recording was made: human narration and computer-generated speech are different listening experiences. Project Gutenberg’s audio catalogs, like LibriVox’s, are not a guarantee of access to every newly released commercial audiobook.
Choose a route based on what you want to hear
| Option | Audio | Typical fit | Cost and access |
|---|---|---|---|
| LibriVox | Human narration by volunteers | Public-domain books | Free catalog; no library card required |
| Project Gutenberg audio | Human-read titles and computer-generated audio | Free books in its audio collections | Free catalog; no library card required |
| Spotify audiobook access in the U.S. | Commercial audiobook titles, subject to plan and title rules | Listeners looking for paid-plan access or individual purchases | Paid plans, add-ons, subscription or purchases; not a free audiobook catalog |
The practical trade-off is selection: free catalogs are useful for public-domain classics and other older works, while current commercial titles may require a paid service or purchase. “No library card” does not mean that every audiobook is free.
How to check whether a free audiobook is legal
A book’s presence online does not by itself mean it is in the public domain. LibriVox says it follows U.S. copyright law for its catalog and does not guarantee that a recording is public domain in other countries. A title may be free of copyright in one country and still protected in another.
- Use established catalogs and check the rights information for the specific title when it is available.
- Consider where you are listening: copyright status can vary by country.
- Remember that a later edition, translation, annotation or introduction may have separate copyright protection from the underlying work.
- Do not assume that an old book or a recording found elsewhere online is legal to download or share.
If a title’s status is uncertain, do not treat free online access as proof that it is legal everywhere. LibriVox’s copyright guidance is available at its public-domain page.

Is Spotify free audiobook access?
No. Spotify’s U.S. page describes audiobook allowances for certain paid plans, add-ons, a separate Audiobooks Access subscription and individual title purchases. It lists 15 hours per month for certain eligible U.S. plans; eligibility and terms apply. Spotify’s free, ad-supported music option should not be confused with free audiobook access.
Spotify’s terms and promotions can change. Its U.S. page currently mentions an Audiobooks+ promotion ending October 20, 2026; it is a paid subscription trial that becomes a monthly charge unless canceled, not a permanently free catalog. Check the current Spotify U.S. audiobook terms before signing up or relying on a promotion.
