The comfortable setup is snug, even contact—not maximum tension. Use a headband designed for lying down when your model offers that option, keep hair and products away from the sensors, make small position changes, and give the sensors time to settle before starting a sleep session.
What a comfortable fit should feel like
An EEG headband needs reliable skin contact, but tightening it until it presses into your forehead or ears is the wrong solution. Muse’s sleep guidance describes the target as “snug, but not tight.” If the device feels uncomfortable, its instruction is to adjust its position rather than increase tension. That principle is specific manufacturer guidance, but it is a useful starting point for any device: pressure, pinching, throbbing, or a growing headache means the fit needs to change.

Comfort is not proof that the sensors are reading well, and a strong signal is not a reason to tolerate pain. The best fit is gentle, even contact across the intended sensor points, with no single edge digging into your skin. Head shape, hair, sleeping position, and anything worn around your ears can all change how a particular design feels. No independent statistic establishes how many people become comfortable with overnight EEG wear, so treat personal comfort as the deciding test rather than expecting a universal adjustment period.
Muse says comfort often improves after a night or two. That is the company’s guidance, not an independently measured result, and it should not be treated as a promise for every headband or every sleeper. If discomfort persists, do not assume you need to push through until you get used to it.

Check whether your model is meant for bed use
Before changing the fit, confirm that the headband is designed to stay in contact while you are lying down. A band intended for upright meditation or daytime use may move when your head meets a pillow, even if it feels fine while sitting.
| Model or model family | Manufacturer-described use | Sleep-session compatibility | Published fitting information |
|---|---|---|---|
| Muse S Gen 1, Muse S Gen 2, and Muse S Athena | Muse describes Muse S models as usable while lying down. | Muse says its sleep experiences require a Muse S headband. | For Athena and Gen 2, Muse lists 46–63 cm measured from the forehead to low at the base of the skull. |
| Muse 2 | Muse describes it as designed for upright use and less likely to maintain skin contact while lying down. | Not the model family Muse specifies for its sleep experiences. | Muse lists 30–35 cm around the forehead to the back of each ear. |
| Original Muse | Muse describes it as designed for upright use and less likely to maintain skin contact while lying down. | Not the model family Muse specifies for its sleep experiences. | Not stated in the cited fitting guide. |
The two measurements in the table follow different paths and are not directly comparable circumference numbers. The 46–63 cm figure for Muse S Athena and Gen 2 runs from the forehead to the low base of the skull; the 30–35 cm Muse 2 figure runs around the forehead to the back of each ear. Do not use one measurement to select the other model.
These statements apply to the named Muse products, not to EEG headbands generally. If your device is from another manufacturer, use its sleep-use and fitting instructions before attempting an overnight session. Do not assume that a daytime band is safe, accurate, or comfortable in bed simply because it powers on. When comparing models, distinguish three questions: whether the device is intended for lying down, whether it supports the sleep feature you want, and whether its sizing and placement suit your head. A “sleep” label or a comfortable seated fit alone does not answer all three.

Charge it before the session
Charge the headband according to its model-specific instructions. Muse’s sleep guide recommends a three-hour charge before a sleep session. A full charge prevents the distraction of reconnecting a cable or discovering a depleted battery after you have settled in. Other devices may specify a different charging time, so the three-hour figure should not be generalized beyond the cited Muse sleep setup.
Make the contact areas easy to reach
Move loose hair away from every sensor contact point. Hair caught between a sensor and skin can reduce contact and create a pressure point as the band shifts. Remove hair products or other skin products from those areas when signal quality is poor; Muse specifically includes products on the contact surfaces among the things to check.

Do not scrub or irritate your skin in an attempt to improve a reading. The goal is simply unobstructed contact at the places the manufacturer identifies. If the product uses a different sensor arrangement, follow that model’s instructions instead of copying the Muse layout.
Decide whether audio belongs in the setup
Audio is optional. Muse says sleep can be tracked without audio, and its app begins tracking automatically after a session starts. Starting silently is a sensible way to isolate headband comfort from earbud or headphone pressure. If you later use an audio experience, choose equipment that remains comfortable when lying down. Do not accept painful pressure from headphones or earbuds just to keep audio enabled; remove them or play audio through a phone or tablet in a quiet room when the system permits it.

Keep the first setup simple: fit the headband and test the contact before adding optional accessories. If you add audio later and discomfort appears, remove the audio gear and see whether the pressure stops. This helps separate a headband fit problem from pressure created by headphones, earbuds, or the way they meet the pillow.
Step-by-step fitting sequence for a Muse S-style sleep band
The following sequence follows Muse’s published placement guidance for Muse S. A different EEG headband may use another pod position, strap path, or sensor layout.
- Center the pod. Place the Muse S pod centrally on your forehead rather than offset toward one temple. The pod should sit where the model’s fitting guide indicates, not wherever the band happens to feel tightest.
- Route the band behind the ears. Position the band behind your ears and low at the base of your skull. This routing helps the band maintain the intended contact when you recline.
- Clear every sensor point. Sweep loose hair away from the forehead and any other contact areas so sensors touch skin directly. If a strand slips under a sensor, move the strand rather than tightening the band over it.
- Set gentle, even tension. Adjust the band until it stays in place without concentrated pressure. If it feels tight, move the band or change its position; do not simply pull harder. Check that the forehead and behind-the-ear areas feel similar rather than relying on one tight spot to hold the device.
- Lie down gradually. Once the standing or seated fit feels even, recline in the position in which you intend to sleep. A band can feel different when your head is supported, so make only small positional changes after lying down.
- Allow a settling period. Muse’s sleep setup guide recommends wearing the headband for 3–5 minutes before beginning a session. Let the sensors and band settle during that interval instead of repeatedly tightening them.
- Start without extra pressure. Begin with silent tracking if headphones, earbuds, glasses, or other accessories make the setup crowded. Add optional audio only after the headband itself remains comfortable.
Make one adjustment at a time and wait before deciding whether it helped. Moving the pod, changing strap tension, adding moisture, and putting on headphones simultaneously makes it difficult to identify the source of a problem. If one small change does not help, return to the intended placement before trying another; avoid an escalating cycle of tightening and readjusting. The 3–5-minute settling guidance is for Muse’s sleep setup, not a universal rule for every EEG device.

What to do when the signal is poor
A poor signal does not automatically mean the band must be tighter. Muse’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking contact first, then making small changes. For Muse equipment, the documented options include:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Move hair away from the sensors.
- Remove skin products from the contact areas.
- Adjust the band’s position rather than increasing tension.
- Apply a small amount of water to the forehead and sensors if the model’s instructions call for it.
Use moisture cautiously and only as permitted by the device instructions. Sensors, electronics, and contact methods differ among EEG headbands; a technique that Muse documents should not be assumed to apply to another brand. If the signal remains poor after the contact points are clear and the fit is even, stop changing the band repeatedly and consult the manufacturer’s model-specific troubleshooting steps. A persistent signal issue is a reason to check the fit and instructions, not to force a painful fit.
Comfort problems and the least-force fix
| What you notice | Likely setup issue | First response |
|---|---|---|
| Forehead pressure or a tightening headache | The band is being used as a clamp, or the pod is positioned poorly. | Reposition the band or pod and reduce tension. Do not solve pressure by tightening further. |
| A sensor loses contact after you lie down | The model may be intended for upright use, or the strap path is not the specified lying-down position. | Confirm the model’s intended use. For Muse S, restore the central forehead pod and behind-the-ear, low-skull routing. |
| Intermittent readings | Hair, skin products, or movement is interrupting contact. | Clear the contact points, make a small fit adjustment, and allow the sensors to settle before restarting. |
| Ear or temple pain after adding audio | Headphones or earbuds are pressing against the headband or pillow-side ear. | Remove the audio gear and test silent tracking, or use a less intrusive option supported by the setup. |
| Discomfort that continues despite repositioning | The device or accessory is not tolerable for your head, sleep position, or medical equipment. | Stop the session. Do not trade pain for a better signal; contact the manufacturer for support. |
Reassess after each change while lying in the position you plan to use. If the device feels comfortable sitting up but presses once you recline, the lying-down fit—not a need for greater tension—is what needs attention. If you cannot maintain sensor contact without pain, stop rather than choosing between an uncomfortable fit and a poor signal.
Sleeping with CPAP, hearing aids, or other equipment
CPAP masks
Muse says compatibility with CPAP depends on whether the specific mask blocks the forehead or behind-the-ear sensor areas. Because mask designs vary, the company does not make a universal compatibility claim. Check the contact points while the mask is fitted, not only while holding it in your hand. If the mask presses on or covers a sensor, changing headband tension may not solve the obstruction.
Hearing aids
Hearing aids that sit behind or on top of the ear may obstruct sensor contact. Muse says in-ear hearing aids should work more readily because they leave the external sensor area less blocked. Fit the hearing aids and the headband together before starting a session; a combination that works separately can compete for the same space when worn at once.

Audio without headphones
Headphones are not required for Muse audio. The company says audio can play through a phone or tablet in a quiet room. This option can eliminate ear pressure, although room audio may not suit every sleeping arrangement. Treat it as an alternative when headphones make the physical setup painful, not as a requirement for sleep tracking.

Pain is a stop signal. Muse’s health and safety guidance says: “If, at any point, you’re using Muse and are experiencing discomfort or pain, please stop using the device and reach out to our team at [email protected] or send us a note through our Contact Support form.” This is the manufacturer’s safety instruction and applies even if the session has already started or the signal looks good.
Muse also says its devices are not medical devices and should not be used to diagnose, treat, or cure a condition. A comfortable overnight session is not a medical evaluation.
Muse S models contain magnets. If you have an implant or another medical device, consult a medical provider before using Muse S. Do not rely on a comfortable fit or a successful connection as evidence that a magnet is safe with your particular device.
These are product-specific cautions. If you use another brand, read its own safety and intended-use information rather than assuming its materials, magnet use, or medical-device guidance is identical. Comfort advice cannot replace the precautions for your particular equipment.

A low-pressure bedtime checklist
- Confirm that your model is intended for lying-down use and supports the sleep experience you want.
- Charge it according to the model instructions; Muse’s sleep guide specifies three hours for its sleep setup.
- Keep hair and products away from every sensor contact point.
- For Muse S, center the pod on the forehead and place the band behind the ears and low at the base of the skull.
- Use snug, even contact. Reposition instead of tightening when pressure appears.
- Lie down, make one small adjustment if needed, and wait the recommended settling period. Muse specifies 3–5 minutes before a sleep session.
- Start without audio if earbuds or headphones add pressure.
- If the signal is poor, check contact, hair, products, moisture guidance, and position in that order.
- Stop immediately if you experience pain or persistent discomfort.
- Ask a medical provider about Muse S before use if you have an implant or medical device.
The practical goal is not to forget that the headband is there; it is to remove avoidable pressure and movement while preserving the sensor contact the specific design requires. A sleep-designed model, a correctly cleared contact path, small adjustments, and a short settling period give you the best chance of reaching that balance without forcing the device.
Frequently Asked Questions
How tight should an EEG headband be in bed?
Aim for gentle, even contact that keeps the intended sensors against skin without pinching or concentrated pressure. Muse describes its target as “snug, but not tight” and advises repositioning the device rather than tightening it if it feels uncomfortable. Follow your own headband’s fitting instructions, since designs differ.
Can I sleep with an EEG headband on?
That depends on the model. Muse says Muse S models can be used lying down and that its sleep experiences require a Muse S headband. It describes Muse 2 and Original Muse as designed for upright use and less likely to maintain skin contact while lying down. Check the manufacturer’s instructions for any other device before wearing it in bed.
What should I do if my EEG headband feels uncomfortable or gives a poor signal?
For discomfort, make a small position adjustment rather than adding tension. For a poor signal, check that hair and products are not between the sensors and skin, then follow the model-specific contact and troubleshooting instructions. Muse’s sleep setup guide suggests wearing the band 3–5 minutes before starting a session. Stop using it if pain or discomfort continues.
Can I use an EEG headband with CPAP or hearing aids?
Muse says CPAP compatibility depends on whether the particular mask blocks forehead or behind-the-ear sensor contact, so it does not make a universal claim across mask designs. Behind-the-ear or over-the-ear hearing aids may also obstruct contact; in-ear aids should leave that area less blocked. Check the actual setup while wearing all equipment together.
Do I need headphones for sleep tracking or audio?
Muse says sleep can be tracked without audio, and headphones are not required for its audio: sound can play through a phone or tablet in a quiet room. If headphones or earbuds create uncomfortable pressure, start with silent tracking or use a supported alternative.
The Bottom Line
Choose a model intended for lying down, clear the sensor contact points, and aim for snug—not tight—fit. Make small adjustments and follow the device’s settling and safety instructions; pain is a reason to stop, not to tighten further.
