How to Get Client Testimonials (Without Making It Weird)

Ask one client privately after a concrete result, keep the request optional, and get separate permission before publishing. Here is the sequence, sample email, and the FTC rules that apply.

The low-pressure way to get a client testimonial is to ask one specific person, privately, after a concrete result, and to make saying no easy. Keep two requests separate: asking for their feedback, and asking permission to use that feedback in your marketing. Most awkwardness comes from blending the two into one favor.

The question comes up often in small-business communities. One small-business forum thread asks it almost word for word, which is a useful sign of how common the hesitation is, though it is anecdotal rather than a measure of how many people share it.

Pick a moment when the result is concrete

Ask after something specific has happened: a delivery, a launch, a measurable milestone, or a client who has already said in writing that the work helped. A vague sense that the project went well is weaker ground for a request than a clear outcome the client can describe. Avoid framing the request as something the client owes you because the engagement has ended. Ending a contract creates no obligation to write anything.

The sequence, step by step

1. Ask privately, and make it optional

Send an email or a direct message so the client can respond on their own schedule. The Small Business Administration’s guidance on customer testimonials suggests starting by email or social message, then asking whether the client is willing to have a short phone conversation. That article is from May 2018, so treat its channel advice as a general starting point rather than a current rule. Say plainly that declining is fine, and mean it.

2. Ask for their experience, not praise

Invite the client to describe what they needed, what working together was like, and what changed afterward. Let them use their own words. Do not ask only the people you expect to be pleased, and do not ask anyone who never used the service. The Federal Trade Commission warns against selective solicitation of that kind in its guide for marketers on soliciting and paying for online reviews.

3. Make the next step small

Offer one or two prompts the client can answer in a few sentences, or offer a brief interview and send back the exact quote for approval before anything is published. Do not write a glowing statement for a client to sign off on unless you have a reasonable basis to believe it accurately reflects their experience. The FTC’s staff Q&A on the Consumer Reviews and Testimonials Rule says a business should have that reasonable basis for any testimonial text it supplies.

4. Ask about publication as a separate question

Receiving feedback does not mean the client has agreed to have it published. Before you use a comment, say where it may appear, such as your website, a proposal, or a social post, and how the client may be identified, whether by full name, first name, company, or photo. Then ask for permission. FTC consumer guidance on the Endorsement Guides addresses interviewing customers and asking them to allow their comments to be quoted in ads. If you record an interview, confirm recording permission before the recording starts.

5. Accept no gracefully

Thank the client for considering the request, and do not let the working relationship depend on their answer. Repeated reminders turn an optional favor into pressure. If you want to follow up once, do it briefly and make clear that silence is an acceptable answer.

Sample request email

Subject: Would you be open to sharing a few words?

Hi [Name],

I'm glad we got to work together on [specific project or outcome]. If you're comfortable, would you be willing to share a few honest sentences about your experience? A couple of prompts, if useful: What were you hoping to solve, and what was most helpful about working together?

There's no pressure if now isn't a good time. If you do share something, I'll check with you before publishing it and confirm where and how you're comfortable being identified.

Thanks either way,
[Name]

The wording is a starting point. No phrasing guarantees a reply, and the email works best when the specific project named in it is one the client remembers clearly.

Choose the format that fits the client

Start with the lowest-effort option the client will accept, then convert the best material into a more visible format only with fresh permission. The table compares the four common routes.

Testimonial, review, and endorsement are different things

The terms overlap in everyday speech, but they carry different obligations. An endorsement is the umbrella category. A testimonial is one type of endorsement, and a review is a separate thing: an evaluation submitted to a review-focused website or platform. The FTC’s staff Q&A defines a testimonial this way:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“A testimonial, one type of endorsement, is an advertising message that consumers are likely to believe reflects the opinions, beliefs, or experiences of a consumer or celebrity who has purchased, used, or otherwise had experience with a product, service, or business.”

The practical consequence is that a private email becomes an advertising message the moment you place it on a homepage, in a proposal, or in a paid post. The rules that apply to advertising then apply to it.

Truthfulness and unusual results

Representative experiences

The FTC’s advertising FAQ for small businesses says endorsements must reflect the endorser’s honest experience or opinion and must not make deceptive claims. It also explains that an unrepresentative experience can mislead when the ad does not say what consumers generally can expect or how limited the result’s applicability is. In the situation the FAQ describes, a “results may vary” disclaimer is not enough by itself. If a client’s outcome was unusually strong, state that it was an exceptional result and add context about what typical clients can expect.

Connections and disclosure

The FTC’s 2023 revision of its Endorsement Guides applies the same basic truthfulness principles across media, including online and social platforms. It also addresses disclosing connections between an endorser and the business that could affect how consumers evaluate the endorsement. For example, if you gave a client a discount or free work, consider whether that relationship should be disclosed alongside the testimonial. The guides are compliance guidance, and the FTC notes that deceptive practices may be investigated under the FTC Act.

Online reviews and incentives

If you ask a client to post a public review, the destination platform’s rules come first. The FTC’s marketer guide advises businesses to know those rules and to avoid selective solicitation. Do not tie an incentive to a positive review. The guide also cautions that a material incentive may need disclosure because it can change how readers weigh the review. Offering something in exchange for a review you have not yet read is still a conditional incentive, so structure any reward so it does not depend on the review’s content.

Checklist before anything goes public

  • The client has approved the exact wording in writing, including any edits you made.
  • You have named where the testimonial will appear and how the client will be identified.
  • Any material connection between you and the client, such as a discount or free work, is disclosed where it matters.
  • An unusually strong result carries context about what typical clients can expect.
  • Recording permission was confirmed for any audio or video.
  • If the content is going on a third-party review site, you checked that platform’s rules.
  • If you later change how the material is used, for example from a website to a paid ad, you asked for permission again.

Where this guidance stops

The FTC and SBA material here reflects U.S. federal guidance. It is not legal advice for other countries, regulated professions, or specialized industries, which may carry additional rules. The FTC’s Consumer Reviews and Testimonials Rule took effect October 21, 2024. Its staff Q&A states that it is not definitive or comprehensive, so do not treat it as a legal safe harbor. If your business operates across borders or in a regulated field, check the rules that apply to you before publishing.

In practice, the same habits satisfy most of these requirements: ask privately, keep the request optional, use the client’s own experience, and get separate, specific permission before any marketing use.
