For low FPS, reduce render distance and demanding visual effects, then check drivers, background apps, and custom content. Java Edition and Bedrock Edition have different settings and hardware targets, so change one setting at a time and compare in the same place.
Diagnose the problem before changing settings
“Lag” can describe several different problems, and the right fix depends on which one you have:

Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11- Low FPS: Motion looks consistently choppy. The computer may be struggling to render each frame.
- Stutter or uneven frame pacing: The game is mostly smooth but pauses or hitches. Background activity, loading, or custom content may be contributing.
- Slow world updates: Entities, plants, or other game mechanics respond slowly. In Bedrock, simulation distance affects how far those mechanics run.
- Multiplayer delay: Actions take time to register or other players move erratically. That can be a connection or server-latency issue rather than low local FPS; lowering graphics settings will not necessarily fix it.
Before troubleshooting, note your edition (Java or Bedrock), device, game version, and whether you use mods, shaders, resource packs, or add-ons. In Java Edition, Intel says to press F3 to open the debug menu; the FPS readout appears in the top-left area. Compare the same world and location, with the same view and resolution, after chunks have loaded. Change one variable at a time so you can tell what helped.
Lower rendering demands first
Start with settings that make the game draw less of the world or use fewer visual effects. The available labels and options differ by edition, device, and game version; look for the closest equivalent in your current video or graphics menu.

- Reduce render distance. This is often the most direct first adjustment: the game draws fewer distant blocks and objects. The trade-off is a shorter visible horizon.
- Reduce resolution if needed. A lower resolution can reduce graphics workload, but makes the image less sharp. Try a small change before making a larger compromise.
- Lower graphics quality and effects. Where available, test options such as clouds, particles, smooth lighting, mipmaps, biome blending, or anti-aliasing. Lowering or disabling effects can improve performance at the cost of visual detail.
- Retest, then restore selectively. Return to the same location and view. If performance is acceptable, turn preferred effects back on one at a time; leave off only the settings that cause a noticeable problem.
Bedrock Edition: distinguish render distance from simulation distance
In Bedrock, render distance controls how far away the client draws blocks and objects. A higher distance increases client graphics work and can lower frame rate. Microsoft Learn’s guide to simulation and render distance distinguishes this from simulation distance, which determines how far game mechanics such as entity behavior, mob spawning, plant growth, and fluid movement run.
Simulation distance can have a greater performance cost because it affects both client and server work, and Bedrock does not allow it to exceed render distance. Reducing it may help with workload, but it also means mechanics run over a smaller area around the player. Ticking areas keep selected chunks active beyond ordinary player proximity and can add further performance cost.

For graphics modes, Minecraft Help describes Simple Graphics as using the least system resources, Fancy as using a moderate amount, and Vibrant Visuals as using the most. The options vary across platforms and builds. Try a less demanding mode or disable effects in the current video settings, then restore features individually if performance improves. Minecraft Help’s guidance is available in its Bedrock video-settings article.
Java Edition: check the current hardware target
Mojang’s Java Edition system requirements give a useful baseline, not a guarantee for every computer, world, or set of mods and shaders. The updated minimum target is 1080p at 30 FPS on Fast settings; the updated recommended target is 1080p at 60 FPS on Fancy settings.

| Java Edition target | Published configuration | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum | 64-bit system; 8 GB RAM with a discrete GPU or 12 GB with integrated graphics; 4-core processor; Vulkan 1.3-capable GPU with at least 2 GB VRAM | Mojang’s updated target for 1080p at 30 FPS on Fast settings. |
| Recommended | 16 GB RAM; a stronger modern processor; graphics hardware with 6 GB VRAM | Mojang’s updated target for 1080p at 60 FPS on Fancy settings. |
Mojang says Java Edition may still launch on hardware below its minimum, but performance and visual quality are no longer guaranteed. These targets do not promise the same results with shaders, heavily modded worlds, different resolutions, operating systems, or other settings.

- Update software: Check for updates to Minecraft, your operating system, and graphics drivers from their vendors.
- Close resource-heavy applications: Other programs using substantial CPU or memory can compete with the game.
- Check GPU selection on hybrid-graphics PCs: If your computer has integrated and discrete graphics, verify that Minecraft’s Java executable is assigned to the intended GPU.
- Isolate custom content: Temporarily disable mods, shaders, resource packs, or Bedrock add-ons. If performance changes, restore them one at a time to identify a likely cause.
- Verify compatibility: Check that each mod or add-on supports your exact game version before using it. Performance and compatibility vary; no one mod can be assumed to help every setup.
Extra memory allocation is not a universal FPS fix. Intel notes it may be relevant for extremely modded or resource-pack-heavy setups, but adding RAM by itself does not ensure higher frame rates.

Understand what a monitor can—and cannot—improve
A display’s refresh rate limits how many frames it can show each second; it does not make Minecraft render more frames. Intel gives the examples that a 60 Hz monitor can display up to 60 FPS and a 144 Hz monitor up to 144 FPS. A higher-refresh display is useful for seeing higher frame rates only if the computer is already producing them. Compare refresh rate alongside resolution and the frame rate your existing system can actually sustain.
What the Java Vulkan change means for FPS
Mojang says it is preparing to move Java Edition rendering from OpenGL toward Vulkan. Its announcement describes testing Vulkan alongside OpenGL and evaluating stability and performance before OpenGL is removed. It also anticipates work for mods that currently use OpenGL rendering. The announcement does not establish a guaranteed FPS increase on players’ computers, so do not treat Vulkan as an automatic performance upgrade. See Mojang’s Vulkan transition update for the stated plan.
When hardware upgrades are worth considering
Consider buying or upgrading hardware only after settings, software updates, background tasks, and custom content have been checked. For Java, compare your exact CPU, GPU, memory, operating system, resolution, and intended graphics settings with Mojang’s current requirements. For Bedrock, account for the device and the graphics mode available on it. If you identify a specific bottleneck, a component upgrade may help, but the available evidence does not support prescribing one component for every player.
