To improve action-camera footage in dim conditions, add light when practical, choose a frame rate that suits the movement, and balance shutter speed against blur and noise. If electronic stabilization makes motion look warped, compare its low-light mode with stabilization reduced or off. The best combination depends on the camera, the light source, and whether the camera or subject is moving.
Why low-light action footage looks blurry, noisy, or unstable
Exposure and motion clarity compete
A longer exposure lets the sensor collect more light, but movement during that exposure becomes motion blur. A shorter exposure can keep moving edges clearer, but it also darkens the image unless you add light or raise ISO. Higher ISO can brighten the result while making image noise more visible. There is no shutter setting that is best for every dim scene.

GoPro Labs explains the trade-off using shutter angle: at 24 fps, its examples equate 360° with 1/24 second and 45° with 1/192 second. Those figures illustrate exposure timing, not recommended settings for every camera or scene. GoPro Labs’ Maximum Shutter Angle guidance lists compatibility for Labs-enabled HERO7–13, MAX, and BONES.
Stabilization cannot undo blur already in a frame
Electronic image stabilization (EIS) corrects movement between frames, but it cannot restore detail lost to a long exposure. When blurred frames are stabilized, motion can look unnatural or smeared. GoPro described this behavior for HERO7 Black with firmware 1.61, whose stabilization adjusted dynamically according to scene light and camera movement; that account should not be assumed to describe every GoPro generation. GoPro’s HERO7 Black low-light explanation also notes the trade-offs involved in changing ISO, shutter time, frame rate, or exposure bias.

Work through the scene in this order
- Identify what is moving. A fixed camera recording a moving subject, a person carrying the camera, and a vehicle-mounted camera each need a different balance of exposure and stabilization. Note whether the light is daylight, steady artificial light, or a flickering LED or mains-powered source.
- Stabilize the camera physically when possible. For a static night scene, use a stable surface or tripod. DJI advises holding the camera steadily to reduce high-frequency shake. GoPro’s HERO5 Black manual warns that its long-exposure Night Photo mode is not recommended for handheld or moving-mounted captures; that warning applies to that product generation and mode.
- Add safe, practical light. Turn on a nearby lamp or add scene-appropriate illumination if the activity permits it. More light can help preserve a faster shutter without relying as much on high ISO. A small LED light can help with a controllable scene, but carrying or aiming a light may be unsafe or impractical during some activities.
- Choose a frame rate for the movement you want to show. Use a lower frame rate when it still captures the action as intended; high frame rates can be useful for slow motion or extra temporal detail, but may leave less exposure time per frame in scarce light. Camera behavior varies: GoPro’s HERO5 Black manual says Auto Low Light may adjust frame rate when possible, and its video stabilization may temporarily turn off when that mode activates. For Insta360 X4, the maker recommends 5.7K rather than 8K in low light for greater light sensitivity. Neither recommendation is universal across camera models.
- Adjust shutter and stabilization together. If moving edges smear or EIS makes the scene look unnatural, try a faster shutter or the camera maker’s low-light motion setting, then compare EIS on and off. A faster shutter can make footage darker or require more ISO; turning EIS off can expose physical camera shake. Change one setting at a time so you can tell what helped.
- Check the result in a short clip. Inspect both moving edges and static detail. Compare one change at a time—added light, frame rate, shutter, ISO limit, or stabilization—under the scene’s actual lighting and motion.

DJI Osmo Action models
DJI recommends keeping the camera steady and increasing environmental brightness when possible. Its support guidance lists SuperNight, manual exposure settings, and “EIS Priority in Low Light” with PRO mode disabled for Osmo Action 5 Pro. For Osmo Action 4 and 3, DJI also describes EIS Priority in Low Light with PRO mode disabled and suggests testing with EIS off. The available modes and exposure ranges are model-specific, so check the current manual and firmware for the exact menu and supported settings.
DJI cautions: “Please note that enabling the stabilization function without meeting the conditions for electronic stabilization may reduce the stabilization effect and image quality.” See DJI’s Osmo Action support guidance for its model-specific advice.

Insta360 X4
Insta360 warns that X4 low-light recording can show more noise, reduced image quality, blur, and ghosting. For this model, it recommends 5.7K rather than 8K for greater light sensitivity and suggests a shutter speed between 1/100 and 1/200 for general low-light recording to reduce blur and ghosting. Treat that shutter range as X4 guidance, not a universal rule: scene motion and available light determine whether the compromise works for your shot. Insta360’s X4 low-light guidance explains these recommendations.
Insta360 GO Series and artificial-light flicker
Insta360 says its GO Series “Low Light Stabilization” or “Jitter Blur Reduction” can change shutter behavior and disable Anti-Flicker. Under LED lights or near displays, that combination may cause visible flicker or black bars. In its nighttime-motion guidance, Insta360 suggests 25, 50, or 100 fps in most 50 Hz regions and 30, 60, or 120 fps in the listed 60 Hz regions. These are maker examples for the nighttime-motion scenario, not a universal rule or a substitute for checking the camera’s current regional settings. The same support page gives different frame-rate examples for a separate banded-shadow scenario, so do not treat the two cases as interchangeable. Insta360’s GO Series low-light guidance describes the feature interaction and regional examples.

GoPro HERO5 Black and HERO7 Black
GoPro’s HERO5 Black manual describes Auto Low Light as a mode that may adjust frame rate when possible; it also says stabilization may be temporarily turned off while the mode is active. The same manual warns against using Night Photo’s long exposure for handheld or moving-mounted shots. These details apply to the HERO5 Black manual, not all GoPro models. For HERO7 Black, GoPro’s low-light article attributes unnatural stabilized motion to blur from long shutter times and discusses exposure adjustments with their associated brightness and noise trade-offs.
Prevent flicker and banding under artificial lights
LED and mains-powered lights can flicker or create dark bands when the camera’s frame and shutter timing conflict with the light’s refresh. If your camera offers an Anti-Flicker setting, select the correct local frequency and use a compatible frame rate. For the Insta360 GO Series nighttime-motion examples above, the maker distinguishes 50 Hz regions from the listed 60 Hz regions. Do not assume the same setting will suit every camera, light source, or recording scenario.

If flicker appears only after enabling a low-light stabilization feature, check whether that feature disables Anti-Flicker. When the camera allows it, compare a short clip with the feature on and off, using the same scene and framing. Black bars or pulsing brightness may point to a light-timing mismatch rather than ordinary camera shake.

What to check when choosing or configuring a camera
Low-light results depend on more than a headline stabilization rating. Check whether the camera has a dedicated low-light mode and which frame rates it supports; how much shutter and exposure control it offers; whether stabilization works with manual or pro settings; which resolution and frame-rate combinations are available; and whether it provides anti-flicker controls suited to your filming region. Also consider whether a stable mount or added light is practical for the activity.

DJI, Insta360, and GoPro describe different model-specific features and behaviors. Their guidance is not a controlled cross-brand comparison, so it does not establish one current action camera as the overall low-light winner. Menus and supported settings can change with firmware; confirm the current manual for your exact camera and inspect a test clip before relying on a setting for an important shot.
