You do not have to restart The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt just because you have forgotten where you left off. First check the Load Game list, choose a save with a location or quest state you recognize, and give yourself one short session to get oriented. If that feels worse than starting fresh, a new game is a valid choice—not a requirement.
How to return to The Witcher 3 without making a big decision first
Save anxiety often turns a simple question—“Can I pick this up again?”—into a choice between committing to an old playthrough and throwing it away. You can postpone that choice. Looking at the saves and loading one for a low-pressure reorientation session does not commit you to finishing the run.

- Open Load Game and inspect the available saves before selecting New Game.
- Choose a save whose displayed location, time, or quest state seems familiar. If none does, pick the most recent save that is actually present and loadable.
- Set a small goal for the session: get your bearings, review the journal, or complete one nearby task. You can stop once you have a clearer sense of whether the old run is appealing.
The menu can show you what is available, but it cannot guarantee that every old slot exists or explain every missing save. If the save you expected is absent, do not assume a cloud service kept a complete archive of your history.

- Journal: Review the active quest and its objective. Pick one thread that interests you rather than trying to resume every unfinished task.
- Map: Check where Geralt is and whether the selected objective is nearby. A familiar region can make the save feel less abstract.
- Inventory and equipment: Look over your weapons, armor, and supplies so you are not surprised by your current setup.
- Quest markers: Select a single destination or objective. Treat the first outing as a refresher, not a test of how much you remember.
If the game still feels unfamiliar, you can stop and decide later. A short trial is useful precisely because it lets you learn how the old save feels before making a larger commitment.
Should you continue the old save or start a new game?
Neither option is automatically better. Choose based on what would make the next session more inviting, not on a rule that you must preserve or discard old progress.
| Consideration | Continue the old save | Start a new game |
|---|---|---|
| Recognizing your place | Good fit if the location, journal, or quest state gives you a foothold. | Good fit if the old save feels like an unfamiliar pile of unfinished threads. |
| Relearning | You can relearn gradually during a short session. | A fresh start gives you a clean beginning, but means playing through earlier content again. |
| Past choices and continuity | Preserves the continuity of that playthrough if the save is present and loadable. | Begins a separate run rather than continuing those choices. |
| How to decide | Try one brief session and see whether orientation reduces the friction. | Choose this if a clean start sounds more enjoyable than troubleshooting your memory of the old run. |
You can also defer the restart decision: load the old save once, then start over only if the trial makes you want a fresh beginning. There is no need to turn a return to the game into a commitment before you know which option feels better.

Is the old save missing, or do you want to play on another platform?
First distinguish a local save from a cross-progression save. Checking Load Game on the platform where you last played is a sensible first step for a local return. Moving progress between platforms is a separate process, and the official cross-progression instructions do not promise that every historical manual save is retained online.
How cross progression works
CD PROJEKT RED says cross progression uploads the latest save for every save type, not a complete archive of every older slot. Its support page says: “Your latest saves will be automatically uploaded to the cloud so you can easily pick up where you left off on other platforms.” For the documented PC flow, update the game, use the Cross Progression prompt in Load Game, connect the game to your CD PROJEKT RED account, create a save, and check for a cloud icon beside its name. On the destination platform, connect the same account and look for that uploaded save in Load Game. Follow the prompt shown by your platform; the Switch instructions route players through My Rewards before enabling and using Cross Progression. CD PROJEKT RED’s cross-progression instructions.
Do not rely on a transfer until the cloud icon appears on the save you created. If you need an older save slot, the official guidance cited here does not establish that cross progression will recover it.

PlayStation transfer instructions are version-specific
CD PROJEKT RED’s PlayStation support article describes a PS4-to-PS5 transfer using Patch 4.04: connect through My Rewards, create a cloud-marked save on PS4, then connect the same account on PS5 and retrieve the save in Load Game. That is a specific, older version path—not a universal instruction for every current edition. The publisher announced Remastered for September 29, 2026, so check the current in-game prompts and current support guidance for your exact platform and versions before transferring.
Does returning require buying The Witcher 3 again?
Not necessarily. CD PROJEKT RED announced The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered as a free upgrade for eligible owners on GOG, Steam, Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, and for original Nintendo Switch owners on Switch 2. Its announcement says the edition includes Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine. Eligibility depends on the platform and the version you already own, so check your store entitlement rather than assuming a purchase is required. CD PROJEKT RED’s September 29, 2026 announcement.
