P.T. did not become the next Silent Hill, and it did not create Resident Evil 7. Konami canceled the planned Silent Hills in 2015, while Capcom was already developing Resident Evil 7. The narrower, supportable connection is still striking: after Capcom had chosen its direction, the response to P.T. helped reassure the team that it was on the right track.
What P.T. was—and what it was not
Released as a playable teaser for Silent Hills, P.T. offered a short, unsettling experience rather than a completed Silent Hill game. Contemporary coverage described it as a marketing initiative for Silent Hills; Konami later referred to the project as “embryonic” when it confirmed that it would not continue. The teaser’s impact cannot tell us exactly what the full game would have been: its final design, story, and gameplay were never released.

That distinction matters to the headline’s counterfactual. P.T. gave players a vivid glimpse of a project that might have renewed the series, but it was not itself the finished game Konami could simply release or hand to another studio.

On April 27, 2015, Konami confirmed that Silent Hills, developed with Guillermo del Toro and featuring Norman Reedus’s likeness, would not continue. The statement also said the company remained committed to new Silent Hill titles. That commitment did not save this particular project: Silent Hills was canceled, and P.T. remained a teaser for a game that would not be completed.

- FEAR COMES HOME -- Fear, combat, exploration, and item management: these are the four pillars of survival horror, a genre that has never been more masterfully executed than in the gameplay of Resident Evil. The horror continues in the ground-breaking Resident Evil 7. Step into the new Isolated View and experience true survival horror in a world created by the all-new RE Engine.
- DEEP IN THE BAYOU - When Ethan Winters opened his inbox, the last thing he expected was to find an email from his wife; she had been missing for three years. The message was simple: "Come get me," and an address in Louisiana. This leads Ethan to a decrepit mansion in the heart of the bayou. The place has a seriously creepy vibe, but Ethan continues his search – until a stranger attacks him and knocks him unconscious. Ethan has no idea what awaits him when he wakes up...for he is now in the clutches of the Baker family.
- A NEW PERSPECTIVE -- In RESIDENT EVIL 7, we're changing the way you interact with the world. For this next major entry in the series, play from a first-person point of view, dramatically increasing your ability to become fully absorbed in the world we have created.
- NEW FOR PLAYSTATION5 – Upgraded features new to the PlayStation5 version of the game include a higher frame rate, 3D audio, added ray tracing, and engaging DualSense support for Haptic Feedback and Adaptive Triggers.
Konami’s later franchise plans are separate. In October 2022, it announced a Silent Hill 2 remake for PlayStation 5 and Steam, naming Bloober Team, Akira Yamaoka, and Masahiro Ito. That announcement was later Silent Hill context, not a revival or continuation of Kojima’s Silent Hills.
Did P.T. inspire Resident Evil 7?
Capcom producer Masachika Kawata said Resident Evil 7 development began in February 2014, before P.T. came out that year. In an interview with UploadVR, he said the positive response to P.T. “helped reaffirm” the team’s direction. That is evidence of validation after development was underway—not that P.T. originated the game’s design or caused its first-person shift.

- Battery: no battery used
Kawata also emphasized that the two projects differed in content and direction. Capcom was not taking over Silent Hills; it was making a different game already in development. The strongest supported connection is that P.T. showed there was a receptive audience for a kind of horror experience Capcom was pursuing.

Capcom described Resident Evil 7 as a return to fear as the series’ core concept, paired with a move from the series’ prior third-person viewpoint to first-person. Kawata explained that the camera change was intended to put players in the character’s position and make horror feel direct and visceral. That is Capcom’s stated design rationale; it does not establish a causal link to P.T..

The game’s Beginning Hour demo was presented as a tonal preview focused on horror and exploration, not as a slice of the complete game. This is a useful point of comparison with P.T.: both offered a concentrated taste of horror, but one previewed a canceled project and the other introduced a game Capcom would release.
What the comparison can—and cannot—show
| Question | P.T. and Silent Hills | Resident Evil 7 |
|---|---|---|
| What was the playable experience? | P.T. was a playable teaser for the planned Silent Hills; it was not the complete game. | Beginning Hour was a preview emphasizing horror and exploration, not a segment of the finished game. |
| What was the project’s outcome? | Konami confirmed in 2015 that the embryonic project would not continue. | Capcom completed and released Resident Evil 7. |
| What is documented about influence? | The teaser’s reception was notably positive; Capcom’s producer said that response helped reaffirm his team’s direction. | Development began in February 2014, before P.T. came out. Capcom attributed the first-person view to its goal of making horror direct and visceral. |
Asked about Resident Evil 7’s reveal, Kojima offered a different, narrower interpretation: “I guess there’s some influence there, even in the format of having a demo teaser.” That is Kojima’s view of the reveal format, not Capcom’s account of what caused its design choices. It can coexist with Kawata’s timeline: a game’s reveal presentation may evoke an earlier teaser even when development began before that teaser appeared.

- As consciousness returns and you blink shadows from your eyes, all you can hear is the ringing in your ears. At first, you think it might be from the bells, as you recall racing through the Clock Tower in search of gears to sound the great bell.
- Then the blood drains from your face as the memories begin to surface. You thought you’d escaped Raccoon City. But it isn’t over yet.
- Continue your desperate escape with 11 hours of new gameplay, nine gripping new scenarios, three terrifying new enemy types, and two large-and-lethal bosses.
- This expansion will drastically change the course of your Resident Evil 3: The Board Game campaign, taking you beyond the built-up city streets to brand new locations plagued by new enemies.
- But new enemies aren’t your only threat. To move forward, you must adapt to new gameplay mechanics introduced by the changed environment. Creep silently through the City Hospital. Wade through flood water in the City Park.
What cannot be established is what Silent Hills would have become if completed, whether it would have changed the series’ future, or whether Resident Evil 7 would have looked different without P.T.. Those are counterfactuals, not facts about a released game.

They show that Capcom’s finished game reached a substantial audience; they do not measure the effect of P.T., prove that the game’s direction depended on it, or tell us how Silent Hills would have performed.
So did P.T. save Resident Evil instead?
Only in a limited, figurative sense. Konami canceled one unfinished project; Capcom completed another game that was already underway. There was no documented transfer of Silent Hills, its team, or its design to Capcom. What P.T. appears to have provided was reassurance: its reception helped validate a direction Capcom had already chosen. The sharper tragedy is not that Resident Evil replaced Silent Hill, but that players saw how powerful a new Silent Hill could feel before learning that the game behind the teaser would not be made.
