If you bought the standalone version of GTA Online and now want the campaign, Rockstar provides a separate purchase path for Story Mode. The exact product screen and availability can vary by platform and storefront, so verify the edition name before paying for anything a second time.

How do I get the controls back into my hands?

Do not begin by memorizing an old controller diagram. Switch protagonists when the map looks quiet

Story Mode missions are not always available to every character at the same moment. Rockstar’s guidance for a missing mission is explicit: Try playing as all three characters for a while to see if the mission opens up. Switch between Michael, Franklin, and Trevor, spend a little in-game time with each, and look for a newly available marker or phone call. A mission can be character-specific or dependent on time passing after another event.

Follow this order when no further missions are showing

1. Switch through all three characters. Stay with each one long enough for the game to process a call or event rather than switching immediately back.
2. Let in-game time pass. Drive, walk, or complete another available activity while waiting for a trigger.
3. Change your location. Move away from the area where you are waiting, then check the map again. Some calls or markers do not appear while you remain in a problematic position.
4. Watch for calls and messages. Keep the phone available and avoid interrupting a call as soon as it begins.
5. Make a new quick save. Save to a new slot rather than overwriting the only copy of your progress, then load that new save.
6. Try a taxi ride with skip enabled. Rockstar lists taking a cab to a mission location and skipping the trip as a possible workaround for a marker that will not activate.
7. Load an earlier save if nothing changes. Rockstar notes that a save may be corrupt when the other steps fail; an earlier, healthy save is the safer recovery option.

These steps are troubleshooting measures, not a guarantee that every missing marker will return. Keep multiple manual saves so that testing a workaround does not erase your last known-good point.

When the game says the mission was disrupted

If the message The mission has been disrupted, please return later appears and the blip disappears, Rockstar recommends leaving the area until the blip returns. Do not remain parked beside the trigger waiting for it to repair itself. Travel away on foot or by vehicle, then check the map again. Rockstar also describes taking a cab to the mission location and skipping the ride as another possible way to re-enter the trigger.

What to do while waiting for the story to advance

Use the pause menu and map as a checklist rather than assuming the campaign has ended. Follow any available character marker, switch protagonists, or spend time on a side activity while the game advances its clock. The objective is to create the conditions for the next call or character-specific event without repeatedly abandoning and restarting the same marker.

What should I do first in GTA Online?

Once you enter an online session, open the Player Interaction Menu and read its options slowly. It is more useful as a navigation anchor than as a menu you speed through from memory. Rockstar’s support material places Daily Objectives inside this menu, making them a simple way to choose a short-term goal after a long absence.

Start with Daily Objectives for a low-commitment re-entry

Open the Interaction Menu, find Daily Objectives, and read the current requirements before accepting anything. Choose an objective that matches your comfort level and available time. A short objective lets you rehearse movement, driving, combat, and menu navigation without committing to a long chain. The objectives change, so do not expect a particular task to appear on every return.

Use Heists when you want a larger cooperative goal

Heists involve more preparation and coordination than a single objective. Rockstar’s Heists support page says that a player who wants to host the Heist described there needs to be Rank 12 and own a high-end apartment. Those are host requirements, not a universal requirement to participate in every cooperative activity.

If your character is below Rank 12 or you do not own a high-end apartment, you can still look for a crew position. Rockstar says you can join by invitation or use Quick Job on the in-game phone to join as crew. This distinction prevents a common mistake: buying or changing properties simply because you assumed hosting was required to play with others.

What about returning-player bonuses and old unlocks?

Rockstar’s article on exclusive PS4, Xbox One, and PC content for returning players describes historic eligibility tied to earlier-generation play. The conditions include completing the Prologue on PS3 or Xbox 360 and linking the relevant account before moving to a later version. The article then describes unlocks and content associated with that returning-player status.

Those rules are not a prerequisite for ordinary Story Mode or GTA Online play today. If you did not complete the older-generation Prologue or link the account under the required conditions, do not delay your return expecting to recreate the promotion. Treat the article as an explanation of a legacy eligibility program, not as a setup checklist for every current player.

A practical 15-minute return plan

Use this sequence when you want a predictable restart rather than a long troubleshooting session:

1. Confirm the mode. Decide whether you are loading a Story Mode save or entering GTA Online.
