What’s actually slowing this PC down?

You do not need to fine-tune a model to have it read your PDFs. You either supply the document as input when you ask your question, or you store it in a retrieval system that finds the relevant passages for each question. Both approaches work with a model in its standard form, and the right choice depends on how many documents you have, whether they contain scans, tables or diagrams, and how much traceability you need.
Why fine-tuning is not part of this workflow
Fine-tuning changes a model’s weights by training it on examples. That is useful for teaching a model a style or a narrow behaviour, but it is a poor way to make a model answer questions about one specific file. A PDF changes often, and training a model on it takes time, data preparation and cost, while a document supplied at the moment you ask is current the moment you upload it.

In practice, “making an LLM read my PDF” means one of two things:
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchPC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11- Context at inference time. The PDF, or extracted content from it, is included in the request along with your question. The model reads it for that interaction.
- Retrieval over stored files. Documents are parsed and made searchable ahead of time. When you ask a question, the system selects the passages most likely to be relevant and passes them to the model.
Choosing between the two approaches
| Approach | How the PDF reaches the model | Best suited to | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chat upload | You attach the file in a chat interface that supports it, and the model reads it as part of that conversation. | One document, a short session, quick summaries and questions. | Depends on the interface’s file, plan and feature rules. Only the conversation’s material is in scope. |
| Inline PDF input through an API | Your code sends the PDF bytes in the request alongside a text prompt. | Developers who want a single document processed in an automated step. | Size limit on inline input. Each request carries the file again. |
| File upload API | Your code uploads the file once, receives a file reference, and uses that reference in later requests. | Larger files, or one file queried many times. | Stored files have retention rules that you need to check. |
| Retrieval over a collection | Documents are parsed and indexed. Relevant passages are retrieved for each question and given to the model. | Many documents and repeated questions over the same material. | Answer quality depends on parsing and retrieval, not only on the model. |
Chat interfaces: uploading a PDF into a conversation
OpenAI’s Help Center article “How does the new file uploads capability work?” describes uploading a PDF into a prompt and asking the model to locate material, with the example phrasing “Upload a PDF and have ChatGPT find any references to a certain topic.” That is the simplest version of this workflow.

Two details matter. First, the same article’s companion guidance on visual handling says that for PDFs uploaded in prompts, visual retrieval can analyse embedded images, graphs and diagrams, and that this applies to Enterprise users. Second, GPT Knowledge and Project Files use text-only retrieval. If a figure or chart is central to your question, a text-only workflow may miss it. Confirm which feature you are using and whether your plan includes visual retrieval, because plan eligibility and feature behaviour change.
API routes for developers
Inline PDF input
Google’s Gemini API documentation describes inline PDF input for files up to 50 MB. This is the simplest route for a single document in a script: you send the file and a prompt in one request. Check the current limit on Google’s files documentation before you design around it, since these numbers change.

File upload for larger files or reuse
For larger files, or for a file you will query repeatedly, Google’s File API lets you upload once and refer to the file later. The same documentation states that files uploaded through the File API are stored temporarily for 48 hours. Plan your pipeline so that it does not assume the file remains available indefinitely, and confirm the retention terms that apply to your account.
Anthropic’s PDF support
Anthropic’s PDF support documentation describes visual PDF handling, meaning the model can work with a page’s rendered content and not only its extracted text. It also states that when citations are not enabled, the API falls back to basic text extraction only. If your PDF relies on layout, tables or figures, enable citations and test the output against the original pages rather than assuming visual understanding is in effect.

When one PDF is not enough: a retrieval workflow
When you have many documents, or the same collection will be queried again and again, sending every file with every question becomes slow and costly. A retrieval workflow avoids that. The general pattern is the same whatever tool you use:
- Parse each PDF into text, keeping page numbers and, where possible, section headings.
- Split the text into passages of a manageable size. Keep a reference to the source file and page for each passage.
- Index the passages so they can be searched by meaning or keyword.
- For each question, retrieve the passages most relevant to it.
- Give the retrieved passages and the question to the model, and instruct it to answer only from those passages and to cite the page for each claim.
Anthropic documents retrieval-augmented generation for Projects. Whether that feature is available on your plan, and what its file and usage limits are, needs to be checked against Anthropic’s current product documentation before you rely on it.

Step by step: a one-off question about a single PDF
- Confirm that the chat interface you are using accepts PDF uploads on your plan. If you are on a plan without the feature, use an API route instead.
- Attach the PDF using the upload or attachment control in the message composer, then wait for the upload to finish before sending.
- Ask a focused question. For example: “Summarize the methods section and give the page number where each claim appears.”
- Open the original PDF and check each cited page. Do not accept a page number without looking at it.
- If the answer relies on a chart, table or scanned page, ask the model to quote the exact text it read, then compare that quote with the page.
Verifying answers against the source
Model output can omit a relevant passage, misread a number, or attribute a claim to the wrong page. Treat the answer as a pointer to the source, not as the source. Use this checklist before you rely on a result:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Every figure, date and named entity in the answer appears on the cited page.
- Tables are checked cell by cell, especially where columns are merged or units are shown in headers.
- Scanned pages have been checked for text recognition errors, since the model may be reading an imperfect text layer.
- Diagrams and charts have been read by a person, unless you have confirmed that the workflow processes visual content.
- If the answer says the document does not contain something, search the PDF yourself before accepting that statement.
Comparing options on the factors that matter
Rather than choosing a single service, compare any option on these five points:
Best Value
- Scanner type: Document
- Connectivity technology: USB
- With Auto Scan Mode, the scanner automatically detects what you're scanning
- Digitize documents and images
- File types and size limits. Check the current limits for chat upload, inline input and file upload separately.
- Visual, layout and table handling. Find out whether the workflow reads only extracted text or also processes rendered pages.
- One-off input or persistent retrieval. Decide whether the document must be re-sent with each request or can be indexed once.
- Citations and page-level traceability. Confirm that the output can point to pages, not only to the document as a whole.
- Privacy, storage and access. Check how long uploaded files are kept, whether they are used for training under your account terms, and what account or API access you need.
Provider behaviour differs, and a feature that exists in one product may be absent or limited in another. Do not assume that a result from one interface carries over to another.
What the available evidence does not show
Product documentation establishes how these workflows are supposed to work, and the limits and retention rules the providers state. It does not establish how accurately any model reads any particular PDF. Accuracy depends on the document’s scan quality, layout, language and the question asked, and it has to be measured on your own files.
For a dependable result, test the workflow on a document where you already know the answer, check the cited pages, and only then move to your real material.
