Does HP provide a Linux fingerprint driver?
HP Support Agent Kuroi_Kenshi said on March 3, 2026, that “HP does not provide official fingerprint sensor drivers for Linux for any of its consumer or business notebook models.” That statement appears in an HP Support Community answer, rather than a published compatibility matrix. A fingerprint reader that works with Windows Hello does not, by itself, establish Linux compatibility.

On Linux, the community-maintained fprint project provides the common route: libfprint supports fingerprint readers, while fprintd handles fingerprint authentication. GNOME offers fingerprint management in User Settings, and most distributions support fingerprint login through fprintd. Package names, available versions, and desktop setup screens vary.

Find the fingerprint reader’s hardware ID. For a USB-connected sensor, that means its USB vendor and product ID. Then compare that ID with the libfprint supported-device list.

Read the list’s qualification carefully: it covers the development version, and the project warns that some listed drivers may not be included in a stable release. A match is a useful lead, not a guarantee that the package installed on your laptop supports the sensor. Check the libfprint version provided by your Linux distribution before concluding that the reader should work.
Set up fingerprint authentication when the stack supports the device
If the sensor is supported by the version available for your system, use the fingerprint controls provided by your desktop environment to enroll a finger. In GNOME, fingerprint management is available through User Settings; fprintd commonly provides the authentication integration used for login. The exact menu labels and package installation steps depend on the distribution and version, so there is no reliable universal command or click path to give without knowing your system.

Enrollment and login support are separate practical checks: a reader must be recognized by the installed stack, and the distribution’s desktop or authentication service must be configured to use it. The fprint project describes support for GNOME settings integration and fingerprint login in most distributions, not every possible configuration.

There is no universal fix established for an unidentified HP sensor. The available sources do not show that a firmware change, custom patch, or Windows-driver workaround applies to this laptop. A community report titled “Fingerprint Reader Not Working on Linux” concerns an individual ProBook 450 G7; it does not demonstrate compatibility or a solution for other models.

If the internal sensor is unsupported, a USB fingerprint reader with a listed hardware ID may be a fallback. Check the precise reader ID against libfprint and confirm that your distribution’s stable package includes its support; do not assume that any USB fingerprint reader will work.

A separate reader also means separate enrollment. The fprint project notes that fingerprint records from different readers may not be compatible, so do not assume fingerprints enrolled on the built-in sensor will carry over to an external one.
