If your TV shows “No Signal,” “HDMI Cable Disconnected,” or a black screen, first make sure the source device is on and awake, then select the TV input that matches the HDMI port it’s plugged into. Reseat both ends of the cable. If that does not restore the picture, change one part of the connection at a time—port, cable, source device, or receiver—so you can identify where the fault lies before arranging service.
Start with power and the correct TV input
Make sure the source is on
Turn on the connected device and wake it from sleep or hibernation. Check its own power light or display if it has one. A streaming player may not be receiving enough power even when its indicator is lit; Roku recommends using the supplied power adapter where possible. See Roku’s HDMI troubleshooting guidance.

Select the HDMI port you are using
On the TV remote, press Input, Source, or the equivalent button and choose the HDMI input number printed beside the TV port where the cable is connected. For example, a cable in HDMI 2 requires the TV to be set to HDMI 2. If you move the cable to another port during troubleshooting, select that port on the TV as well. Pause briefly after selecting it to give the TV time to detect the video signal. Button names and menus vary by model; consult your TV manual if needed. Samsung and Roku outline these checks in their Samsung HDMI troubleshooting guide and Roku support article.

Turn off the TV and source device, then disconnect and firmly reconnect the HDMI cable at both ends. Inspect the plugs and ports for obvious looseness or damage. Samsung Singapore describes a reset procedure that includes disconnecting power from the TV and source for at least 10 seconds, reconnecting the HDMI cable to the source first and then the TV, and selecting a different TV port if needed. This is a manufacturer-specific procedure; use the instructions for your own models. Samsung Singapore’s instructions were updated May 30, 2022.

With the devices powered back on, try a different HDMI port on the TV and select its matching input. If the image appears on the new port, the original port or its connection may be the issue. If there is still no picture, continue with the cable test rather than assuming the TV needs repair.
Test with a known-good HDMI cable
Swap in a cable you know works with another HDMI device. Samsung Support explicitly recommends trying a different HDMI cable in its U.S. troubleshooting guide. Treat the cable swap as a diagnostic test, not a guaranteed fix.

For 4K, HDR, or other demanding video modes, check the requirements listed for the TV, source, and every device in between. A cable or connection path that works for a lower-resolution signal may not support every format. Do not assume that one cable specification or setting fits all equipment; Roku’s 4K/HDR guidance notes that compatible devices and HDCP 2.2 support are required in the relevant connection path for applicable setups.

- Another source works on the TV: the original source device or its output settings may be responsible.
- The original source works on another TV: investigate the original TV’s port, input selection, or compatibility settings.
- Known-working devices fail only on one TV port: ask the TV manufacturer about that port or arrange service.
Samsung and LG both advise testing the connection with another device as part of HDMI troubleshooting. See Samsung’s guide and LG’s U.S. support guidance.
Bypass a receiver or soundbar
If the HDMI cable runs from the source through an AV receiver or soundbar before reaching the TV, temporarily connect the source directly to the TV. Sony notes that a receiver or other connected equipment may not pass a signal in some setups. If the direct connection works, check that the intermediary is set to the correct input and that its model supports the signal format you are using. Sony’s instructions are at Sony Support.

Check the source’s output format
If the TV recognizes that something is connected but the display remains black or unusable, the source may be sending a resolution or video format the TV cannot display. Check both devices’ manuals for supported output modes, then use the source’s settings to select a compatible resolution or format. Sony recommends checking the source manufacturer’s instructions for changing its output format. On applicable Roku players, automatic display-type selection can help; for 4K or HDR, confirm that the TV, source, and connection path support the required mode and HDCP 2.2. Exact menu labels and capabilities depend on the models.

Decide whether to update, contact support, or seek service
If the basic connection checks do not resolve the issue, check the TV maker’s instructions for available software updates; Samsung includes a software-update check in its HDMI detection guidance. Avoid buying multiple cables or replacing equipment at random. Use the cross-tests to identify which component the problem follows:
Best Value
- IN THE BOX: HDMI cable (A Male to A Male) for connecting 2 HDMI-enabled devices; 3 feet long in Black
- DEVICE COMPATIBLE: Connects Blu-ray players, Fire TV, Apple TV, PS4, PS3, Xbox One, Xbox 360, and computers to TVs, displays, A/V receivers, and more

- EASY CONNECTION: Share an Internet connection among multiple devices (no need for a separate Ethernet cable)
- BACKWARDS COMPATIBLE: Works with earlier versions to allow for use with a wide range of HDMI-enabled devices
- Problem follows the source: contact the source-device manufacturer, especially if it fails on more than one TV with a known-good cable.
- Problem stays with one TV port: contact the TV manufacturer or arrange service if known-working devices and cables also fail there.
- Direct connection works but receiver or soundbar connection does not: consult the intermediary’s manual or manufacturer about input selection and signal passthrough.
Service steps and menu paths differ by model and region. Samsung’s U.S. troubleshooting guide recommends escalation when its checks do not solve the detection problem.
