Your traffic reaches websites through that server, so they see its public IP rather than the IP of your usual connection. This can make your connection appear to come from Austria, but it does not guarantee that a website or video will work.
Get an Austrian IP address while abroad
- Choose a VPN that currently offers Austrian servers. Check that its app supports the device you want to use. A provider’s own setup instructions can show how to choose Austria; for example, Proton VPN’s ORF-TV guide instructs users to connect to an Austrian server. That is provider guidance, not independent proof that ORF content will work.
- Install the VPN’s official app and sign in. In the app’s server or location list, select Austria and connect. With a VPN, your traffic is routed through the remote server, whose IP is presented to the destination. Austria’s online-safety guide explains this routing model.
- Check the apparent IP country. Before diagnosing a particular website, use a reputable IP-check page to see what country your public IP is associated with. ORF also recommends checking the displayed location when troubleshooting.
- Check the target service’s rules and requirements. An Austrian IP is not authorization to access content, and it cannot override an account requirement, service terms, licensing restriction, or VPN block.
Why an Austrian IP may not unlock a website or video
Services may use location information to apply territorial limits, and a VPN connection can be detected or rejected. ORF says that some videos are restricted for licensing or other rights reasons and warns that VPNs may not access protected videos. Its guidance, dated 24 July 2024, says that even when an Austrian IP is needed for protected Austrian-only material, VPN access is not assured: ORF’s explanation of geo-restricted videos.

If a service does not work, check its own availability, account and location requirements, and terms rather than assuming that a different VPN server will solve the problem. Private Internet Access’s VPN app guidance describes choosing a server in an app and tells users to follow applicable laws and third-party terms; the cited page does not establish that PIA currently offers Austrian servers. Review the terms of both the VPN provider and the service you plan to use.

If you are already in Austria but appear to be elsewhere
You may not need a VPN. First check the country shown for your public IP. If it is wrong, contact your internet service provider and ask it to investigate the geolocation result. ORF’s help information advises users in Austria who appear to have a foreign IP to check the result and contact their ISP if necessary.

Public dynamic IPv4 is different from an Austrian VPN IP
If your issue is that your ISP has given you only a private address and you need a public IPv4 address, that is a separate request from routing through Austria. Austria’s telecommunications regulator RTR says that, in the situation covered by its public-IP FAQ, customers may request a public dynamic IPv4 address from their ISP free of charge. The FAQ does not establish a right to a free permanently fixed (static) IP address. A public address requested from an ISP also does not, by itself, make your connection appear Austrian when you are abroad.
Use one device, a whole home network, or a local connection?
One device
A VPN app on a phone, computer, or other supported device is the straightforward option when only that device needs to use an Austrian VPN endpoint. The Austrian IP is the VPN server’s address, not a new address assigned to your physical internet connection.

Several devices at home
A VPN-capable router can route multiple devices through a VPN endpoint, but the selected endpoint still needs to be in Austria. The sources cited here do not establish compatibility for a particular router model or test a specific setup, so check the router and VPN provider’s documentation before relying on one.
A genuinely local Austrian internet connection
A VPN server in Austria gives websites an Austrian-facing exit IP; it does not make your physical connection an Austrian ISP connection. If a service or network requires connectivity actually provided from Austria, you need an internet connection located there rather than just an Austrian location selected in a VPN app. Austria’s government guide discusses connecting to a home or company VPN server, but that requires a server and internet connection at that location.

What to compare before choosing an option
| What matters | What to check |
|---|---|
| Austrian endpoint | Confirm the VPN currently lists a server in Austria. Proton VPN’s ORF guide documents an Austria-specific workflow; the cited PIA page explains server selection but does not confirm Austrian availability. |
| Target-service access | Check the service’s territorial, account, and VPN rules. ORF warns that licensing restrictions and VPN checks can still prevent access to protected videos. |
| Devices covered | Decide whether you need an app on one device or a router setup for several devices. The cited material does not test router models. |
| Type of IP problem | For a foreign location result while in Austria, check the displayed country and contact your ISP. For a private IPv4 address, consult RTR’s guidance on requesting a public dynamic IPv4. Neither is the same as obtaining an Austrian VPN endpoint while abroad. |
| Terms and lawful use | Read the VPN provider’s terms and the destination service’s terms. PIA’s cited guide says users are responsible for following applicable laws and third-party terms. |
What a VPN does—and does not do
A VPN routes internet traffic through another server. Austria’s online-safety guide explains that the destination sees the VPN server’s IP for routed activity. That changes the IP location presented to a site; it should not be mistaken for anonymity or antivirus protection, and it does not guarantee access to restricted content.
