Connect to a VPN server in the United States to make websites see the VPN server’s public IP address instead of your usual one. Install the provider’s app, sign in, choose a US location, and connect. For a TV or console that cannot run a VPN app, Smart DNS may work with some services, but it does not provide a VPN’s encrypted tunnel or equivalent IP masking. Neither method guarantees that a particular website or streaming service will accept the connection.
Choose the method that fits your device and need
| Option | Best fit | What it changes | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| VPN app | Phones and computers, plus other devices supported by the provider | Routes traffic through a VPN server; a VPN can encrypt traffic between your device and that server | A site can block the VPN endpoint or check other account and service signals. Location choices vary by provider. Proton VPN, ExpressVPN, and NordVPN describe US server connections. |
| Smart DNS | Some compatible TVs and consoles that cannot run a VPN app | Changes DNS settings; it does not route all traffic through a VPN tunnel | It does not encrypt traffic or hide the device IP as a VPN does, and compatibility varies. Private Internet Access explains its Smart DNS setup; USip also describes a separate Smart DNS option. |
| Residential-IP VPN | A specialized use case where a provider offers a US endpoint it describes as residential | Routes traffic through a VPN endpoint the provider describes as US home broadband | USip says its location is assigned automatically, not by city or state; a provider’s residential label does not guarantee that an outside service will accept or classify the address that way. Its listed plan allows one VPN device at a time. USip product details |
| Dedicated US IP add-on | Potentially, work systems that require an IP allowlist, depending on provider support | Provides a non-shared endpoint according to the provider | Availability and terms depend on provider and plan. It is not necessary for ordinary US-IP access. Check the provider’s current offering. |
Get a US IP with a VPN app
- Choose a provider with US locations and support for your device. Check its current location list, privacy and logging policy, and subscription and renewal terms. The pages linked here describe each provider’s own service; they are not an independent comparison of speed, privacy practices, or successful access to particular services.
- Install the provider’s official app and sign in. Proton documents signing up, downloading its app, and connecting to a US server. ExpressVPN describes selecting a US server location or using Smart Location. NordVPN describes selecting a US location and suggests starting with a nearby US city for performance. Proton VPN US instructions, ExpressVPN US instructions, NordVPN US locations.
- Select United States or a city, if the app offers that choice, then connect. City-level selection differs by provider. A listed city is not by itself independent confirmation that a provider operates a physical server there.
- Check the apparent public IP, then try the intended website or app. If the IP check still shows your usual location, confirm the VPN says it is connected and check the selected server. An IP check confirms the apparent public IP, not whether a service will accept your account or connection.
When city choice matters
A city selector can be useful if a work system or service expects a particular region, or if you want to compare nearby US locations for latency. Not every provider offers city selection: USip says its residential location is assigned automatically and that users cannot select a city or state. USip’s location details

Use Smart DNS on a compatible TV or console
Smart DNS can be an option when the device cannot install a VPN app and has configurable network DNS settings. Setup is provider- and device-specific. Private Internet Access describes generating a Smart DNS address in the account and entering it in the device’s network settings; some devices may need a restart. Read its setup guide.

USip says its Smart DNS setup does not create an OpenVPN tunnel, even when configured on a router. USip product details. Consider a residential US IP only for a specific reason
USip describes its VPN endpoint as routed through US home broadband and residential. The provider says the location is assigned automatically, is not a selectable city or state, and is not a permanent fixed address; it describes the address as exclusive among its customers while in use. Those are provider claims, not proof that another website will identify or accept the IP as residential. USip product details
USip’s page, accessed in 2026, lists a three-day trial followed by €9.99 monthly, €39 every six months, or €69 annually. It says a payment method is required for the trial, subscriptions renew automatically unless cancelled before the trial ends, and one VPN device can be connected at a time. These are provider-published terms and prices, not guaranteed future offers; check the live page before subscribing. USip current terms

Why a US IP might not be enough
A VPN changes the apparent public IP and can encrypt traffic between your device and the VPN server. It also shifts some trust to the VPN provider: depending on its service design and encryption beyond the tunnel, it may be able to observe connection metadata or traffic details. Read the provider’s privacy and logging policy rather than treating VPN use as anonymity. Provider pages describe their own services and do not independently establish every privacy claim.
Services may also consider account country, billing or payment details, GPS, DNS, app-store region, device compatibility, or their terms. A US endpoint therefore does not guarantee access to an account, title, app, or live event. Proton says its VPN is not intended as a means of copyright circumvention and directs users to the streaming service’s terms. Proton VPN US page

Troubleshoot a connection that still shows the wrong location
- Confirm the VPN app reports an active connection to a US location.
- Check the apparent public IP again. If it does not appear to be in the US, reconnect or choose another US location if the provider offers one.
- Close and reopen the affected app or browser, then test the service again.
- If the IP appears to be in the US but access still fails, consult the service’s own terms and support. It may use account, payment, GPS, DNS, app-store, or other checks that an IP change does not satisfy.
What to compare before choosing
- Device support: Confirm the provider has an app for your phone or computer. For a TV or console, check whether the device supports the provider’s VPN app or Smart DNS instructions.
- Location control: Find out whether you can select only the US, a city, or another region—and whether location assignment is automatic.
- Privacy needs: Review the provider’s privacy and logging policy. A VPN connection does not make you anonymous.
- Endpoint type: Decide whether a standard shared VPN endpoint is sufficient, or whether you have a specific need to investigate a dedicated or provider-described residential IP.
- Current terms: Verify price, renewal, trial, device limits, and cancellation terms on the provider’s live page.
- Service compatibility: Check the target service’s own terms and support guidance. The cited provider pages do not establish an apples-to-apples speed winner or guarantee that a service will work.
